1 2015 LIBERTY JAMBOREE THE 2015 LIBERTY JAMBOREE THIS IS GOING TO BE A GREAT EVENT! As with so many aspects of Scouting, communication is the key to ensuring a successful and enjoyable Liberty Jamboree experience for our youth, adult Scouters, staff, and our program partners. The Jamboree staff will be updating information frequently on our website, Facebook page, and in s to unit leaders as we enter the home stretch toward arrival on Friday, October 2nd. We also have developed the 2015 Liberty Jamboree Smartphone App for Android devices and iphones, available for free in the Google Play Store and the iphone App Store. The app features the Jamboree schedule, important information, a link to submit photos to share, and most importantly, will provide real time reminders, updates and emergency information during the entire weekend. Please encourage your Scouts to download the app and get connected to the Jamboree, and to visit our website and Facebook page for updates on all of the exciting experiences they will enjoy. For you unit leaders, make sure you have the September 13 meeting at Liberty State Park (1:30 pm) on your calendar. Each unit must send an adult leader who will be attending the Jamboree. We will review the Jamboree map, entry and check in procedures, exit and emergency plans, the Jamboree schedule, and issue your check in packets. The meeting will take place in Freedom Field at the pavilions. Please bring a chair, a bottle of water, a pen, your questions, and a little patience as we do our best to prepare you for this unforgettable event. Before attending, please review the FAQ on the Jamboree website, which will answer many of your questions. We still have room for more participants. If you have Scouts who did not initially register, you may add them until September 8th. Units may also register until that date, so please spread the word. No one should miss this. At least one person from your unit who will be attending the Jamboree must be at this meeting. It will be held at Liberty State Park on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at 1:30 P.M. The meeting will take place at the Picnic Pavilions. The best GPS address is 20 Theodore Conrad Drive, Jersey City, NJ Be sure to rsvp to Vicki Kallok at vicki.kallok@scouting.org. Among other things, there will be a review of the camping guides, a chance to see the camping area, and parking passes will be distributed. This is a great chance to have all your questions about the Jamboree answered. Please bring your own chair! There will be no seating in the Freedom Field Pavilion where we will be meeting. Don t remember where the Trading Post is located? No problem! Simply download and use the 2015 Liberty Jamboree App and have all the latest information at your fingertips. The app is free and easy to use. Download it before the event and be prepared with all the information you ll need to navigate this awesome event. PURCHASE YOUR PARKING PASSES NOW! PARKING IS EXTREMELY LIMITED. ACT NOW! By this time all unit contacts should have received an order form for their parking passes. Please complete the form and mail with your payment to the council service center, attn: Vicki Kallok. All payments for parking passes are due by SEPTEMBER 8, If you have not received your form, contact Vicki Kallok at Vicki.Kallok@scouting.org to receive it. REMEMBER: Parking is extremely limited at Liberty State Park, so units will only be able to purchase one (1) parking pass for every four (4) registered participants. In addition, every unit can purchase one (1) GEAR PASS, which will allow you to park a trailer. Parking Passes will be distributed at the MANDATORY LEADERS MEETING on September 13, 2015 at 1:30 pm at Liberty State Park. Parking passes will not be distributed without FULL PAYMENT. 3 INFORMATION FOR DAY VISITORS 1,000 ARE EXPECTED! Parking for day visitors will be at the NJ Transit Liberty State Park Light Rail Station. The station is just west of the Liberty Science Center. Day visitor staff will be stationed there to direct visitors to the shuttle buses and to inform visitors of the registration process. The shuttle buses will take day visitors to the last parking lot on Morris Pesin Drive. At this location we will have volunteers to staff the registration stations. We will have one tent for cash registrations, one tent for credit card registrations and, one tent for visitors waiting for the shuttle buses and for staff to guide visitors. The shuttle buses will take visitors to the second parking lot along Freedom Way. This location will have a tent with staff to check in visitors into the Jamboree and to direct visitors to the various locations. SECURITY STAFF MEMBERS NEEDED! JOIN OUR IMPORTANT TEAM! Join the Liberty Jamboree Security Staff to help ensure a safe weekend for our Scouts!! Security Staff is needed starting on Thursday, October 1 st through Sunday afternoon, October 3 rd. 4 HAMMER FOR HABITAT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AT THE LIBERTY JAMBOREE Morris Habitat for Humanity and the Patriots Path Council Boy Scouts of America will be teaming up to help build walls for a future Habitat homeowner in need of an affordable place to live, at the Jamboree on Saturday, October 3 rd at Liberty State Park. Morris Habitat will be organizing the construction, working with the Scouts to build and assemble the kits (pre-cut studs), transporting the kits to the state park, and setting up four workstations in preparation to frame the walls. On the day of the build, Scouts will build and sheath 60 wall panels. Scouts, under the supervision of Morris Habitat staff and Patriots Path Council volunteers, will hammer 2x4 s into framed walls. When the walls are completed they will then be assembled in to a mock house in which Scouts and others can walk through, take photos, and write messages of support. The Scouts will have the opportunity to meet the prospective homeowners. The walls will be dissembled and transported to Harding Avenue, Dover, where volunteers will reassemble on a foundation. The home, a 4 bedroom Cape Cod style home, will be Energy Star certified 3.0, use Water Sense products and sustainable building materials wherever possible, will be part of a four home project. Coming to the Liberty Jamboree? Do not miss the presentation of a special challenge coin to be presented to every Eagle Scout there. What is a challenge coin? There are many examples of traditions that build camaraderie in the military, but few are as wellrespected as the practice of carrying a challenge coin, a small medallion, or token that signifies a person is a member of an organization. While challenge coins have broken into the civilian population, they are still a bit of a mystery for those outside the armed forces. In June 2011, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, now our National Council President, toured military bases in Afghanistan before his impending retirement. Along the way, he shook hands with dozens of service men and women in what, to the naked eye, appeared to be a simple exchange of respect. It was, in fact, a secret handshake with a surprise inside for the recipient a special Secretary of Defense challenge coin. So Eagles, come from far and wide to the Eagle Scout gathering led by Larry Rosello of our Alumni Committee and receive yours from the Council Key 3 and Randy Larsen from the National Eagle Scout Association!
6 SERVICE PROJECTS CONTINUE AT LIBERTY STATE PARK PATRIOTS PATH COUNCIL UNITS MAKE A DIFFERENCE! The Patriots Path Council has been pitching in to spruce up Liberty State Park. Since last fall, Scouts from around our council and their families have been performing volunteer service days to clean up the shorelines and ready innumerable flower gardens and wildlife areas for the spring and summer months. With the Jamboree just over a month away, there is still more to do to make the park ready for our arrival. It is not too late to participate!! There is still an opportunity left for your unit to perform service, earn Jamboree rewards, and help make the event even better! 10 NASA ASTRONAUT TO VISIT THE LIBERTY JAMBOREE DR. LEE MORIN TO COME AND SPEAK TO SCOUTS. Dr. Lee Morin graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1974 and then matriculated at New York University School of Medicine, where he received a Master of Science in Biochemistry in 1978, an M.D. in 1981, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology in In 1982, Morin received a Direct Commission in the Naval Reserve and then entered active duty and attended the Naval Undersea Medical Institute in Groton, Connecticut. He was designated as an Undersea Medical Officer in He joined the crew of the USS HENRY M. JACKSON. He remained aboard as Medical Officer for both Blue and Gold crews until Morin then entered Flight Surgeon training at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute (NAMI) in Pensacola, Florida. He received his Wings of Gold as a Naval Flight Surgeon in 1986, and remained on the staff at NAMI as Flight Surgeon/Diving Medal Officer until While at NAMI, he received his Masters of Public Health degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He then left active duty and entered private practice in occupational medicine in Jacksonville, Florida. In August 1990, he was recalled to active duty during Operation Desert Shield, when he was assigned to Branch Clinic, Naval Air Station Pensacola as a Flight Surgeon. Morin volunteered to reenter active duty, and was assigned to Administrative Support Unit, Bahrain, as Diving Medical Officer/Flight Surgeon during Operation Desert Storm and during the post-war builddown period. Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in April 1996, Morin reported to the Johnson Space Center in August Initially assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Computer Support Branch, followed by the Astronaut Office Advanced Vehicles Branch, and International Space Station training tasks in the Shuttle Operations Branch of the Astronaut Office. Morin served on the Extravehicular Activity (EVA) crew of STS-110 (2002) and has logged more than 259 hours in space, including over 14 EVA hours. After STS-110, he was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Health, Space, and Science with the Department of State, Washington D.C. After this tour, he returned to the Astronaut Office at Johnson Space Center. He is currently assigned to the Exploration Branch, where he is working on the cockpit of NASA s newest spacecraft, the Orion Multipurpose Crew Vehicle. STS-110 Atlantis (April 8 to April 19, 2002) was the mission to visit the International Space Station. Mission milestones included the delivery and installation of the SO (S-Zero) Truss; the first time the station s robotic arm was used to maneuver spacewalkers around the station; and the first time that all of a shuttle crew s spacewalks were based from the station s Quest Airlock. Morin performed two EVAs totaling 14 hours and 9 minutes. The crew prepared the station for future spacewalks and spent a week in joint operations with the station s Expedition 4 crew. Mission duration was 10 days, 19 hours and 42 minutes.
