3 Greetings With the holidays approaching it is a good time to reflect on all we have to be thankful for our families, friends and Philadelphia Senior Center that allows all of us to be together. Everyone has some special gift to share whether it is good humor, a talent like painting or singing, or just the ability to really listen when someone has a problem and needs a friend. Thanksgiving is a great holiday. It allows us to remember these basic, but very important parts of our lives with little intrusion by TV ads or other advertising. Take time to give thanks on November 22 and carry those thoughts throughout the year. Celebration is also a great part of the holiday season. The Philadelphia Senior Center is providing lots of opportunities for celebrating. I am really looking forward to hearing our great chorus sing out on November 15 as well as our big holiday family meals here at PSC on November 21 and December 14. Also, the New Year s party was terrific last year and I am looking forward to this year s event on December 28. I hope to see all of you at these great celebrations so get your tickets early PROPERTY TAX / RENT REBATE PROGRAM HAS BEEN EXTENDED The Pennsylvania Property Tax / Rent Rebate Program has been extended until December 31, 2007 to allow more older and disabled individuals an opportunity to file a rebate. A new law increases the income from $15,000 to $35,000 for homeowners and increases the maximum rebate for both homeowners and renters from $500 to $650. The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older, widows and widower s age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. If you have not yet filed a rebate, please schedule an appointment with the In-Center Counselor, Saladin Davis by calling AARP INVESTMENT FRAUD BINGO Tuesday, November 13 1:00 p.m. Room A To help seniors better recognize the warning signs of financial deceptions, AARP Pennsylvania is partnering with the Pennsylvania Securities Commission. This game of Bingo was specially created to teach older consumers about standard investment deceptions and ways some salespersons push seniors to make quick money decisions. The program encourages consumers to look beyond the high-pressure sales pitch and be skeptical of unsolicited telephone calls. We are having a Holiday Bazaar on Saturday December 8 here at PSC. Funds raised will benefit PSC. It will include arts, crafts, gifts, entertainment and food. You can do your holiday shopping from one of the vendors at this fun event. Look for notices about the bazaar and plan to attend with family and friends. As we move into colder weather, it is important to stay warm and healthy. One part of that is to get your flu shot. You will find information on where to get your flu shot throughout the center. Take this small step so you can enjoy the holidays and stay strong during the winter months. Also if you need help with your heating bills see our in-center counselors. As you read through this Newsline, you will see many other terrific activities going on at PSC, so get involved in as many as you can. Also, please keep in mind our snow closing policy noted in this edition and throughout the center. And finally, please vote for our next Mayor on November 6. I look forward to sharing the holiday season with you. Robert J. Groves Chief Executive Officer 2
