3 What D I Need t D t Graduate frm CSM? Meet academic requirements fr graduatin Apply fr graduatin by required date (see Appendix A) and meet with an advisr Satisfy any financial bligatins t the cllege Academic, Applicatin and Financial Requirements a. At the time f applicatin fr graduatin, students will declare the catalg under which they intend t graduate. They will fllw the requirements f a catalg f ne academic year during which they were registered and attended classes at the cllege. Shuld a student s enrllment at the Cllege f Suthern Maryland be interrupted by a break f at least five years, the catalg in effect when the student re-enters the cllege will be cnsidered the year-f-entry catalg. If a student changes his/her academic prgram during the curse f study, he/she must chse the current catalg fr the newly selected academic prgram. b. T qualify as a candidate fr a degree r certificate, students must cmplete all curses required in the curriculum. Unless required curses have been fficially waived, all students must meet the curse requirements f their prgram t graduate. c. T graduate, students must pass all curses required in their curriculum and must have a grade pint average (GPA) f 2.00 fr all wrk at the cllege. AAT students must have a minimum cumulative GPA f 2.75 and a cpy f their PRAXIS scres must be n file with CSM. d. There are three levels f hnrs awarded at the cmpletin f degrees r certificates: Highest hnrs a cumulative grade pint average f 3.9 t 4.0 High hnrs a cumulative grade pint average f 3.75 t 3.89 Hnrs a cumulative grade pint average f 3.5 t 3.74 Students must have earned at least ne-half f their degree r certificate credits at CSM in rder t be eligible fr hnrs. The hnrs designatin is recrded n the transcript and eligible students will be given an hnr crd t wear at the ceremny. e. If students transfer credits frm anther cllege t fulfill requirements fr graduatin at CSM, they must have their transcript(s) n file in the Registrar s ffice and evaluated in rder t receive their diplma. f. If students wish t be cnsidered fr graduatin, they must cmplete an applicatin fr graduatin with an academic advisr and indicate whether they will participate in the ceremny r nly receive their diplma(s) in the mail. All assciate, certificate, and LOR candidates are eligible fr graduatin. LOR (Letters f Recgnitin) recipients d nt participate in the ceremny. g. Students must satisfy all financial bligatins (tuitin balances, library fines, etc.) prir t receiving a diplma. h. Federal Staffrd Student Lan recipients wh are graduating r transferring must cmplete the required exit lan cunseling. Ceremny Infrmatin Students must have a cap and gwn t participate in the ceremny. The fllwing regalia packages are available in the cllege stre: Basic Graduatin Package - $33.50 Cap/gwn/tassel Basic Plus Graduatin Package - $50 Cap/ gwn/tassel and bx f 20 generic CSM annuncements Premium Graduatin Package - $ Cap/gwn/tassel, bx f 20 generic annuncements/and diplma frame Please see Appendix C fr pick up dates fr regalia. Caps and gwns must be purchased thrugh CSM. Graduates shuld pick up their academic regalia early t allw time fr pressing r steaming t remve wrinkles. Graduates wh have questins regarding regalia, please cntact the bkstre at If a graduate r their guest requires disability-related accmmdatins, please cntact Disability Supprt Services at The bkstre sells diplma frames and a variety f graduatin nvelties. Flwers fr graduates may be available fr purchase prir t the ceremny. Tickets Tickets are required fr the winter ceremny since it is held in the PE building. Tickets are ONLY required fr the spring ceremny if the ceremny is mved t the PE building due t inclement weather. Each graduate will receive fur tickets fr winter graduatin and three tickets fr spring graduatin. Based n the number f graduates, the alltted number f tickets culd change. N extra tickets are available. Tickets are issued thrugh Eventbrite.cm. Please be sure yur address is current n yur graduatin applicatin. Students will receive an invitatin frm Eventbrite.cm, They must lg n their website and print their wn tickets. Please keep the tickets in a safe place; n replacement tickets will be issued. Guests (regardless f age) will nt be permitted t enter the PE building withut a ticket, n exceptins. T accmmdate extra guests withut tickets, we will simulcast the ceremny in the FA building. 2

4 Cmmencement Students arrive by 4:30 n graduatin day. Guests can begin t arrive after 5:00 p.m. Cmmencement takes place at 6:00 p.m. The prcessin f graduates begins prmptly at 6:00 p.m. The ceremny lasts apprximately 1 ½ - 2 hurs. Special seating fr guests with special needs will be available. Guest seating is n a first-cme, first-served basis. Guests are asked t be seated 15 minutes prir t the start f the ceremny. Once the prcessin f graduates begins, the drs t the PE Building will be clsed and NOT REOPENED until the ceremny has ended. Anyne arriving late will be asked t g t the FA Building, even if they have a ticket. During the prcessin, ceremny, and recessinal, we ask guests t please keep all aisles clear and t turn ff all cell phnes and pagers. Once the ceremny has begun, we ask that all guests remain in their seats fr the duratin f the prgram, except in case f emergency. Once the ceremny is cmpleted, guests are asked t remain in their seats until all graduates have exited. Degrees are cnferred at the ceremny. Diplmas will be mailed t students. Receptin A receptin fllws immediately after the winter and spring ceremnies in the BI Building. The receptin will feature cake and punch. Family members and friends are invited t stay and celebrate achievements. Phtgraphs Phtgraphy is allwed during the ceremny frm individual seats. Individuals will nt be permitted t stand in the aisles r at the side f the platfrm t take phtgraphs during the ceremny. Caps and gwns Students must purchase caps and gwns at the CSM bkstre. A list f participating students will be prvided t the bkstres. Please see Appendix C fr available graduatin packages and the cap and gwn pick up dates. Students cming after these dates are nt guaranteed t receive a cap and gwn prir t the graduatin ceremny. Alchl Plicy Parking Alchlic beverages are nt permitted at the cmmencement ceremny r receptin. All campus lts are pen fr the cmmencement ceremny with the exceptin f the lt in frnt f the AD building fr the spring ceremny. Handicapped parking will be available. 3

5 What t wear Remve wrinkles frm the gwn by steaming r irning n a lw heat setting. Graduates wh are members f Phi Theta Kappa may wear the gld PTK stle, tassel r crd. Graduates wh are members f ther hnr scieties may wear their regalia. Students wh have been awarded hnr stles, crds r medals may wear them as well. Students graduating with academic hnrs (3.5 r abve will receive their crd at check-in. The dress cde fr the ceremny fr graduates is business casual. Please n jeans, shrts r flip flps. Tassels are wrn n the right side f the cap. Where t Assemble Graduates will assemble at 4:30 p.m. in the PE Building, lwer level fr the winter ceremny. Graduates will assemble at 4:30 pm in the BU Building fr the spring ceremny r in the PE Building, lwer level if the ceremny is mved inside due t inclement weather. Please view t view ur graduatin instructinal vides fr students. Students will be given a card with their name n it and any academic hnrs they are receiving. Hld n t this card, this is hw yur name will be called when yu crss the stage. Ceremny Ceremny begins prmptly at 6:00 p.m. Order f Exercises Prcessin Prcessinal The Natinal Anthem President s Welcme Student Gvernment s Welcme Special Graduatin Speaker Presentatin f Special Awards Presentatin f Candidates fr Certificates and Degrees Cnferring f Certificates and Degrees Recessinal The platfrm guests march in first (single rw), the Marshal carrying the ceremnial mace, the President, Vice Presidents, Bard f Trustees, Cmmissiners and special guests, fllwed by faculty (in rws f tw) and then graduates (single rw). Graduates will march in rder f the degree prgram name. Graduates will be led by a selected student carrying the student mace. Graduates will walk single file dwn the center f the aisle. The Marshal will assist in seating the graduates. The Marshal will indicate when t fill the next rw. Graduates will remain standing until the cnclusin f the natinal anthem. Presentatin f Graduates The Vice President will say will the candidates fr certificate and Assciate degrees cme frward ; the graduates in the first rw will stand and cme t the left f the stage. Please fllw the Marshal s instructins. Receiving Yur Diplma Graduates will prceed t the stage via the left aisle t the stairs n the side f the stage. The Marshal will be there t assist. Graduates sitting n the far left end f each rw shuld remain especially alert, and watch fr the Marshal s signals. Make sure yu have yur card befre yu leave yur seat. At the tp f the stairs, give the card bearing yur name t the reader. Once yur name is read, prceed t the appinted psitin n the stage t shake hands with the Chair f the Bard f Trustees, wh will hand yu the diplma. Mve t the President and shake his hand, then mve t the end f the stage and prceed dwn the right stairway. Graduates will receive a temprary cver that needs t be returned at the end f the ceremny. Guests will certainly want t applaud the graduates, as they well shuld. Please remind them, hwever, that the persn marching behind yu deserves equal pprtunity fr recgnitin. We ask that individual celebratins be shrt and apprpriately respectful. Awarding f Degrees Once all students have received their diplmas, the President will ask the graduates t stand. All graduates will stand in unisn and remain standing until the President cnfers the degrees. Graduates then switch tassels frm right t left. Graduates remain standing and turn twards the faculty. Faculty will recgnize graduates. Graduates then are seated. Recessin The platfrm party exits first dwn the steps t their left (single rw). Then the faculty exits tw rws at a time. Graduates then exit in a single rw. Graduates shuld keep mving and ask their guests t meet them in the receptin area r smewhere utside. 4

6 Tickets are required fr entrance t the PE Building. Graduates will receive an invitatin frm Eventbrite.cm. Please make sure t check yur Spam r Junk flder fr the invite, as well. Yu MUST accept the invitatin and prceed t their website t PRINT YOUR OWN TICKETS. Yu will need t create a user name and passwrd. Tickets will be available beginning Nvember 27, 2017 fr the winter graduatin and April 3, 2018 fr the spring graduatin. Lk fr yur invite at that time. If yu have difficulty with Eventbrite please cntact the Registrar s ffice at Thse guests withut a ticket may prceed t the FA Building t watch the ceremny via bradcast in ur Fine Arts Theatre. Guest seating is first-cme, firstserved fr that building. Plan fr family and guests t arrive early. Once the prcessin f graduates begins, the drs t the PE Building will be clsed and NOT REOPENED until the ceremny is cmpleted. Anyne arriving late will be asked t g t the FA Building EVEN if they have a ticket. The prcessin f graduatin students will begin prmptly at the designated time; family and friends must be seated by that time. Befre the ceremny, establish a place t reunite with family and guests when the ceremny cncludes. During the prcessin, ceremny, and recessin, guests shuld remain in their seats t keep the aisles clear. At the cnclusin f the ceremny, family and guests shuld remain in their seats until the recessin f ceremny participants is cmplete.
