5 OKLAHOMA STATE MEN S GOLF championship history 1963 ncaa champions 1963 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Oklahoma State s first NCAA team golf championship came in 1963 at the Wichita Country Club. Coach Labron Harris, Sr., (extreme left) and team are pictured with the NCAA traveling trophy. The team included (from left to right): George Hixon, Duke Evans, Don Lackey and Dave Eichelberger. Not present when the picture was taken was Jim Jamieson Oklahoma State s first national golf title came at the Wichita Country Club as the Cowboys claimed a two-round one-stroke victory. George Hixon led the Cowboys, finishing one shot out of first place after posting a first-round 67 to lead the tournament after one day. 6 1976 ncaa champions championship history 1976 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Coach Mike Holder s first NCAA team championship came in 1976 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Kneeling is Holder while the team consisted of (left to right): Lindy Miller, Ft. Worth, Texas (Arlington Heights); Tom Jones, Tulsa, Okla. (Rogers); Britt Harrison, Beaumont, Texas (Forest Park); Jaime Gonzalez, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and David Edwards, Edmond, Okla (Edmond) The first national crown for Mike Holder as well as the second for an OSU golf team came at Albuquerque, N.M. in The Cowboys posted a seven-shot advantage over Brigham Young. Lindy Miller and Jaime Gonzalez were both two-over par during the four rounds to finish tied for 10th, seven shots behind individual champion Scott Simpson of Southern California. 7 OKLAHOMA STATE MEN S GOLF championship history 1978 ncaa champions 1978 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Mike Holder s second and Oklahoma State s third NCAA championship team took honors in Eugene, Ore., in OSU easily outdistanced the field for the team title while David Edwards (extreme right) won medalist honors for the tournament which was determined over the first 54 holes of the 72-hole tournament. The team included (left to right): Britt Harrison, Beaumont, Texas (Forest Park); Bob Tway, Marietta, Ga. (Wheeler); Lindy Miller, Ft. Worth, Texas (Arlington Heights); Rafael Alarcon, Guadalajara, Mexico; and Edwards, Edmond, Okla (Edmond) Eugene, Oregon was the site of OSU s third NCAA Championship as David Edwards won medalist honors in leading the Cowboys to the team title. The individual race was decided over the first three days of the event as Edwards posted a two-shot victory with a 209 score. 8 1980 ncaa champions championship history 1980 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Oklahoma State traveled to Columbus, Ohio, and the famed Scarlet Course to grab the 1980 NCAA team championship. The team included (back row, left to right): Willie Wood, Tucson, Ariz. (Sabino); Bob Tway, Marietta, Ga. (Wheeler); Coach Mike Holder; and Eric Evans, Canoga Park, Calif. (Canoga Park). Alarcon led OSU as he finished third individually in the tournament with a three-under par 285 for the 72 holes The Cowboys claimed their fourth NCAA Championship and their third in five years at Columbus, Ohio. OSU entered the final day in a three-way tie with BYU and Ohio State, before shooting an even-par 288 on the final day for a four-stroke victory ahead of BYU. Utah State s Jay Don Blake won a playoff with Hal Sutton of Centenary for medalist honors, while Rafael Alarcon was OSU s top finisher, two shots back. Team Scores Individual Results 1. 9 OKLAHOMA STATE MEN S GOLF championship history 1983 ncaa champions 1983 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM In 1983 Oklahoma State traveled to Fresno, Calif., where it beat arch rival Texas by seven shots to win the NCAA team championship. The team was composed of (left to right): Tommy Moore, New Orleans, La. (De LaSalle); Scott Verplank, Dallas, Texas (White); Andy Dillard, Tyler, Texas (Lee); Willie Wood, Tucson, Ariz. (Sabino); Philip Walton, Malahide, Ireland; and Coach Mike Holder. The brash freshman Verplank gave signs of things to come when his one-under par 287 tied him for first individually, but he lost on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff OSU freshman Scott Verplank tied for first individually through 72 holes but lost a four-way playoff to Jim Carter of Arizona State and tied for second place in leading OSU to its fifth NCAA title. Verplank would win an individual title his senior year. OSU defeated Texas by seven shots in this tournament at Fresno, Calif. as three Cowboys finished among the top 25. 10 1987 ncaa champions championship history 1987 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM OSU s sixth NCAA team championship and fifth for coach Mike Holder came in 1987, again on the Scarlet Course at Columbus, Ohio. With Brian Watts (extreme right, second row) firing a sizzling 66 on the final day, which won individual honors at 280, the Cowboys easily outdistanced second place Wake Forest by 16 shots. The team included (front row, left to right): Brian Montgomery, Bristow, Okla. (Bristow) and E.J. Pfister, Marilla, N.Y. (Marilla) On the back row (left to right), Coach Holder; Michael Bradley, Valrico, Fla. (Valrico); Tim Fleming, Ocean Springs, Miss. (Ocean Springs).; and Watts, Carrollton, Texas (Newman-Smith) Brian Watts captured the individual title, becoming the fifth of seven OSU medalists at the event, and led the Cowboys to a 16-shot victory margin. Three OSU players placed in the top six. E.J. Pfister, who tied for 65th would become OSU s third straight NCAA individual champion in Team Scores Individual Results 1. 11 OKLAHOMA STATE MEN S GOLF championship history 1991 ncaa champions 1991 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Two seniors in Kevin Wentworth and Bob May and three sophomores in Craig Hainline, Scott De Serrano and Jaxon Brigman, battled the elements to capture the title in a final-day comeback at the Poppy Hills Golf Course at Pebble Beach, Calif. From left to right are Kevin Wentworth, Manteca, Calif. (Manteca); Jaxon Brigman, Abilene, Texas (Wylie); Scott De Serrano, Farmer s Branch, Texas (Turner); Craig Hainline, Wichita, Kan. (West); Bob May, LaHabra, Calif. (Los Altos); and Coach Mike Holder OSU battled rough windy conditions in the first round and led after two rounds, before seeing North Carolina grab the third-round lead. OSU made up a three-stroke Tar Heel lead, including two strokes on the final nine holes to earn the golf team s seventh and the school s 40th overall national title. For the 21st time in the last 22 years, OSU produced at least one top-10 individual finisher as Craig Hainline tied for fourth and Scott De Serrano tied for 10th. Team Scores Individual Results 1. 12 1995 ncaa champions championship history 1995 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Winning the first playoff in NCAA Championship history, Oklahoma State captured the 1995 title defeating Stanford in a thrilling 73rd hole of golf for the third time at The Scarlet Course at Columbus, Ohio. Not pictured: Leif Westerberg, Upplands Vasby, Sweden OSU produced a miraculous comeback in what appeared to be a two-team race between defending national champion Stanford and Texas. The Cowboys made up a seven-stroke deficit late in the fourth round with five birdies in the last three holes to force the first playoff in NCAA Championship history. Bratton and Cox posted birdies on the extra hole, while Tidland and Kuehne carded pars to give OSU the victory and the school's eighth national golf title. Westerberg, who had left for the airport to catch a plane to compete in the British Amateur, did not participate in the playoff. 13 OKLAHOMA STATE MEN S GOLF championship history 2000 ncaa champions 2000 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Winning the school s ninth NCAA Championship was no easy task as the Cowboys survived a one-hole playoff over Georgia Tech at The Grand National Golf Club at Opelika, Alabama. Team members included: Charles Howell, Augusta, GA (Westminister); Landry Mahan, Richardson, TX (Berkner); Edward Loar, Rockwall, TX (Rockwall); Asst. Coach Mike McGraw, Anders Hultman, Gothenburg, Sweden (Burgardens); J.C. DeLeon, Tulsa, OK (Jenks) and Coach Mike Holder Despite entering the final round with a three-stroke lead over the Texas Longhorns, OSU needed seven birdies in the final five holes to pull even with hard-charging Georgia Tech. In the playoff, OSU carded four pars and a birdie for one under par compared with Georgia Tech s one over par. The Cowboys lone birdie came from true freshman J.C. DeLeon, who sank a side-hill 8-foot putt to sercure the victory. Charles Howell set the all-time NCAA scoring record (23 under par) and cruised to an 8-stroke victory over Houston s Chris Morris in the individual race to become OSU s seventh NCAA Individual Champion. 14 2006 ncaa champions championship history Team Scores 2006 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM The Cowboys made their first season under head coach Mike McGraw a memorable one, claiming a three-shot victory over Florida at Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore. Battling adverse conditions, OSU carded an evenpar 288 score to gain ground on the field and move into second place with 18 holes remaining. The Cowboys were able to fend off hard-charging Florida on the final day with a 5-under 283 team score to finish three shots clear of the Gators. Jonathan Moore became just the seventh freshman to win the NCAA individual title, posting a four-shot victory. Sophomore Pablo Martin turned in a fifth-place showing to mark OSU s first national tournament with two players in the top five since Individual Results 1.
