7 One Greek Student Honored with Order of Pegasus Award turned it down, saying I didn t really need a sister. That s not really me. After experiencing a few hardships over the course of the year, her mentor reached out to her, encouraging her to consider Greek life once more. When she considered Greek life, at first, she connected through superficial reasons red being her favorite color, her love for the owl, seven being her lucky number (there are seven founders) but the more she researched it, the more she fell in love with the organization. [Greek life] is the whole package when it comes to leadership, sisterhood and all of the core values that Chi Upsilon Sigma obtains. of reflection. Even though I was doing a lot of work, it just wasn t my time. But that kind of was like a setback, Santiago said. I m not doing this for Order of Pegasus. Everything I do is for my community. With that in mind, she made one small change. This year, I learned to brag more about myself. If you don t brag about yourself a lot of the time, people don t know. Santiago felt like the more people heard what she was trying to do, the more they came out. And the more they came out, the more they realized all the hard work she was putting in. After receiving word that she would be bestowed the institution s highest honor, Order of Pegasus, one student could do nothing but beam with pure excitement, inwardly and outwardly. Surrounded by family and loved ones over Thanksgiving Break, the notification set the narrative of something for which she could be thankful. When I got the , I was completely surprised and flabbergasted and excited, said Elizabeth Santiago, a sister of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Incorporated. It was really crazy, and I jumped up and down multiple times. But Order of Pegasus wasn t always something she thought she actively thought of attaining. I knew Order of Pegasus from the moment I entered. It was in the back of my mind, but it wasn t something I was continuously working toward. It was something that I thought would be really cool to get. Beginning her time at UCF as a member of the SOAR Access Program, a summer program for students who may not have the highest SAT score or a score to regularly get admitted, but the university thinks shows promise, she expected to coast through college, get her degree and get out. She worked two jobs in high school to help support her family and only took the SAT once without studying. In her mind, she was doing this for her family and her single mother who worked so hard for her to be able to attend college. Santiago, 22, joined her organization in summer of 2014, and through the educational process, her organization pushed her to be involved, not just in the chapter but in Diversified Greek Council, or DGC, as well, and she knew right after crossing she wanted to be involved in any way with DGC. Right away she was a delegate, and at the first meeting they had positions available, and she applied. She served on PR, and while on PR she had plans to be president, a goal she achieved in the academic year. DGC was not the only placed she found herself involved, getting involved in Legacy Scholars, Latin American Student Association (LASA) and President s Leadership Council (PLC), which she credits for much of her preparation and vaulting her into Order of Pegasus. PLC is one of the staples of me reaching Order of Pegasus because in PLC you re taught to be poised, polished and professional. PLC helped refine her speaking and networking capabilities and allowed her to talk to vice presidents of the university, making connections and showing them a student perspective. These experiences encouraged her to take on LASA and rebuild it from the ground up. If I hadn t done that, I don t think I would ve had the same impact on the Order of Pegasus Selection committee as I did. Although a lot of positives came from PLC, the ending of her first year didn t go as she had hoped, as she wasn t recommended As she learned to brag more and reflected on her past experiences, she felt like Order of Pegasus was something she could attain. The interview for PLC is a high-pressure environment. In getting through my sorority and getting through my PLC experience, the Order of Pegasus felt natural. It didn t feel like so much pressure. With that preparation and confidence, the was a surprise, as it was a check on her abilities because she didn t feel confident coming to UCF. To me, this award of Order of Pegasus, it s not just for me. It s for all the students like me who came in just like me who maybe didn t get that letter of acceptance right away or was waitlisted. Santiago hasn t forgotten where she came from and knows that experience helped launch her into being honored with the Order of Pegasus award. I want to go back to my SOAR program and say it s possible for you to come in the way that you came in and still achieve all that you want because I did it and you can to. There s no excuse. Grind, put in the work, have a vision and it s there. The psychology major and legal studies minor now has her focus set on applying for law school, with UF and FSU her primary targets. Hopefully she doesn t have to wait as long for these acceptances as for Order of Pegasus. While in the program, her mentor or invited to the application process for encouraged her to get involved in Greek Order of Pegasus like many of the other 7 life, as it had a lot to offer her. She initially juniors in the program. This led to a time 7
8 Community Spotlight cont. This has become my second home and I love every second I spend there, Hailey said. I recently got the opportunity to become one of the expertise trainers there! I ride the horses and we have to keep them in shape for the lessons with our participants. Cierra St. Amour, Hannah McGavock, Amber Plaskin, and Maria Gonzalez (left to right) of Kappa Alpha Theta spent two hours at Clean the World, an organization that supports good hygiene and packages hygiene products for countries in need of these sanitary items, unpacking bars of soap and re-packing them into boxes to ship to Haiti following the natural disasters and various incidents that have taken place. It was a very eye opening experience because I feel that we take it for granted how necessary proper hygiene products are in every day life, Amber said. This was a beautiful experience and I really bonded with these sisters and we are planning to go back soon! Kappa Alpha Theta s Hailey Fitzpatrick has spent the last few months volunteering at Freedom Ride, a non-profit organization that provides therapy to disabled children and adults. Recently, four brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. were nominated for awards at BFDC s Tribute to a Black Man. Three of those brothers received awards. 8 8
9 On March 4th, Kappa Delta invited their local Girl Scout friends to obtain the Girls Can Change the World patch. The sisters of Kappa Delta taught the girls manners for attending tea parties as well as doing fun activities, such as painting flower pots and decorating cookies. Congratulations to the five newest members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., who had their new member presentation on March
10 The Lambda Epsilon chapter of Kappa Sigma hosted their annual Key West Fest and worked with local small businesses and individual concert-goers to raise $85,324 through donations and ticket sales for the Military Heroes Campaign. Lambda-Epsilon s President, Harrison Chau, echoed the excitement of this year s event, saying Each year, through some way, we can raise more money for the Military Heroes Campaign, and we are honored to raise awareness for our nation s heroes through this annual celebration
