3 Chapter History The creation of the Iota Nu Chapter in Harford County, MD took place on a cool, calm evening in January of Bro. Charles Alston Sr. and Bro. Newton Rucker, met in the basement of Bro. Charles Alston s home to formally implement a plan to establish an Omega Psi Phi chapter in Harford County. Prior to moving to Harford County, Bro. Alston and Bro. Rucker were actively involved in the Pi Omega chapter in Baltimore, MD. Once in Harford County, they saw the need for an Omega presence in the area. They decided to start seeking out fellow fraternity brothers, hoping that a new chapter would encourage more fellowship amongst Omega men in the area and also foster a sense of urgency to actively engage the youth in the area. Bro. Alston and Bro. Newton successfully recruited 16 men thoroughly immersed in the true Omega spirit. They met as often as possible to fellowship while laying the groundwork for the establishment of Iota Nu. These men of similar interests and ideas, worked diligently to complete the work necessary for Iota Nu s birth. Bro. James Monroe initiated the process and with the blessing of Grand Basileus Ellis Corbett Iota Nu s charter application was officially submitted in Subsequently, Iota Nu s application was approved and on the glorious day of January 28, 1970, Iota Nu became an official chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The culmination of the vision of these brothers came into reality on March 14, 1970 at St. John s Episcopal Church inhavre De Grace, MD. On this day Iota Nu s charter was officially presented by the District Representative Dr. Norman Johnson at 6pm. 3

5 Basileus Message Greetings Friends, I greet you in the name of the Supreme Basileus of the Universe. On behalf of the over 50 Brothers of Iota Nu Chapter it is my privilege to present a summary of the Mandated and Social Action Programs executed by the Brothers of Iota Nu Chapter for the Fraternal year 1 November October The work of our Chapter and the success of our program is due to the hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to service of our members. The impact of our program on the Harford and Cecil County communities is evident from the frequent request of assistance from community leaders. The vision of the Founders of Omega, Brother Edgar A. Love, Brother Oscar J. Cooper, Brother Frank Coleman, and Brother Professor Ernest E. Just to create a group of Men to Uplift their communities is bearing fruit as our program expands year after year. The witness to this is our being named 2 nd Place Winner of the Social Action Chapter of the Year for the 2 nd District in the Small Chapter Category. Our program has expanded in three areas: 1. Outreach expanded to include a partnership with the WeCancerve organization, which was founded to provide uplift to sick children and homeless families. This partnership has brought our efforts to the streets of our communities where the indigent need direct help with clothing and shelter. 2. Membership has expanded to include initiating four brothers who are undergraduates at McDanial College. The 2 nd District has been working for years to establish a chapter at this university located in Westminster, Maryland, and Iota Nu answered the call. 3. Inclusion expanded by re-establishing the Quettes and strengthening our family ties. Brother Melvin Adderley, the Chairman of the Social Action Committee and his team works tirelessly to maintain existing community relationships and develop new ones. Their hard work will be visible in this summary. It has been a pleasure to relive our 46 th year of service and to share it with you. I hope you gain an appreciation of the work of the Brothers of Iota Nu. Respectfully, Brother Mark A. Thomas Basileus, Iota Nu 5

6 Social Action Chair Greetings Brothers, Creative thought, deliberate planning, and decisive execution. These three simple goals served as the strategic guide for the Chapter s Social Action Program. Although tradition is important, awareness of changing conditions within the community requires creative thought in order to understand and better posture for more meaningful support. On this note, the chapter executed three new events designed to better serve the Harford and Cecil Counties here in the state of Maryland. These being the Football Camp Initiative conceived and facilitated by Brother Rick Witherspoon to accommodate local youths aspiring to excel on the gridiron; the Fatherhood Initiative to promote active and responsible parenting; and international health promotion efforts led by Brother John Sampson. Detailed planning factored prominently with identifying these opportunities - and executing these events. Finally, the support offered by the Brothers of Iota Nu continues to serve as an exemplary example of commitment to service and UPLIFT. On behalf of the Social Action Committee, my sincere thanks to all of the brothers of Iota Nu for their steadfast support. Proud to be Omega Proud of the Brothers from Iota Nu. Fraternally Yours, Brother Melvin Adderley, Social Action Chair 6

Impressed with the work of the We Cancerve Movement Inc., Brothers Michael Bennett (1-14-IN) and Anthony Dorsey (3-11-IN) asked how Omega could continue to assist the organization. Brother Bennett gave an inspiring presentation to the Brothers at the November chapter meeting, where it was agreed to assist We Cancerve with a sock drive. The need for socks is great for the homeless, as most organizations focus on food and clothes, but socks are a need which is overlooked. "The initial goal was to collect 200 pairs of socks but we think that because the Omegas joined our effort, we collected five times more than that," said Callwood, a fifth grade honor student. The Iota Nu Chapter donated more than 434 pairs of socks and delivered to the We Cancerve organization and on 18 December 2015, 124 pair were delivered to the Harford House, with further donations to other homeless shelters during the Christmas Holidays. Through this partnership, more than 1,118 pairs of socks were delivered to four homeless shelters including an emergency shelter in Havre de Grace that opens only during freezing weather conditions.
