WVU COLISEUM ALL-TIME SERIES: NU, Live Stream: WVUSports.com THE MATCHUP Nebraska will face its first road test of the season on Saturday, as the Huskers will travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to face West Virginia. Action from the WVU Coliseum is set to begin at noon (CT). The dual will be streamed live on WVUSports.com. The 13th-ranked Cornhuskers are coming off a dual season-opening win over Wyoming last Friday. Tyler Berger (157) and Isaiah White (165) both defeated ranked opponents, while Taylor Venz (184) and David Jensen (HWT) both scored technical falls to help distance the Huskers from the Cowboys in the late bouts. Four Huskers come into the West Virginia dual ranked in the latest InterMat rankings. Tyler Berger is the highest-ranked Husker, as he comes in at fourth at 157 pounds, while Colton McCrystal moved up one spot to fifth in this week s rankings at 149 pounds. Chad Red Jr. is ranked seventh at 141 pounds, and Isaiah White was the biggest mover, as he jumped five spots to 11th after defeating No. 12 Branson Ashworth of Wyoming last Friday. West Virginia dropped its only dual of the season to Big 12 foe Utah Valley on Nov. 3, WVU competed last week at the Lindenwood Open, and was led by Matthew Schmitt, who finished third at 133 pounds. Two Mountaineers are ranked by InterMat this week, including threetime NCAA qualifier Jake Smith, who is ranked sixth at 197 pounds but has not competed in following an injury last season. Redshirt freshman Zeke Moisey is ranked 17th at 125 pounds. Neither wrestler is projected to be in the starting lineup for WVU on Saturday. Last Time Out: Nebraska defeated Wyoming, 25-10, last Friday Up Next: The Huskers will compete at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational next Friday and Saturday. 4 RETURNING NCAA QUALIFIERS BACK TO BUSINESS Nebraska s returning NCAA qualifiers Tyler Berger and Colton McCrystal have both picked up where they left off last season, and each own identical 5-0 records with a dual win and an open tournament title under their belts. The pair also owns 65 career wins a piece. Berger, an All-American at 157 pounds a season ago, knocked off his third-consecutive ranked opponent as he took down No. 17 Archie Colgan of Wyoming by a 5-4 decision. Berger won the Daktronics Open title, which included decisions over No. 20 Luke Zilverberg of South Dakota State and No. 10 Jake Short of Minnesota. Berger was Nebraska s wins leader with 36 last season, and sports a career record of 65-19, which puts him on pace to become the next member of Nebraska s 100-win club. McCrystal, who advanced to the round of 12 at 141 pounds at the NCAA Championships last season, is off to a great start as he moved up a weight class to 149 pounds this year. He defeated No. 7 Steve Bleise of Minnesota in the championship match at the Daktronics Open, and scored his first dual win of the season with a 7-3 decision over Sam Turner of Wyoming. NEW CONTRIBUTORS RECORD FIRST DUAL WINS With six starters, including three All-Americans, lost to graduation from a season ago, Nebraska s starting lineup is dramatically different than it was a season ago. New contributors, including sophomores, redshirt freshmen, and veterans who have paid their dues to earn starting spots, are now featured heavily in the lineup. Six Huskers saw their first dual action of their careers in a Nebraska singlet last week, as Kris Williams (125), Brian Peska (133), Chad Red Jr. (141), Isaiah White (165), Taylor Venz (184) and Eric Schultz (197) were each inserted into the starting lineup for the first time. Five Huskers picked up their first dual wins last week, as Williams, White and Schultz, each won by decision, while Venz and David Jensen (HWT) both won by technical falls. VENZ PICKS UP FALL AFTER FALL AFTER FALL Redshirt freshman Taylor Venz has won all five of his matches at 184 pounds so far this season, and none of them have gone the distance. He won his first three matches at the Daktronics Open by pin, and defeated Brady Ayers of South Dakota State by a 17-1 technical fall in the championship match. In last Friday s dual, Venz defeated Chaz Polson by technical fall, In a 28-4 redshirt season last year, Venz pinned eight opponents and defeated seven more by tech fall. HUSKERS WORKING THROUGH TOUGH SCHEDULE Nebraska will face seven teams in dual action in that finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships last season: Michigan (10th), Illinois (11th), Wisconsin (13th), NC State (17th), Rutgers (19th), Wyoming (21st) and Stanford (24th). White nearly pinned the Cowboy early on, and held off a late barrage to hold on for the 7-5 victory at 165 pounds. With the dual tied after four bouts, No. 4 Tyler Berger gave the Huskers a lead they would not relinquish, as he defeated No. 17 Archie Colgan after gaining a riding time advantage at 157 pounds, 5-4. Two Huskers scored bonus-point wins to put the dual out of reach in the later bouts. At 184 pounds, Taylor Venz tech falled Chaz Polson, 17-2, before David Jensen scored a four-point near fall just before time expired in the third period to wrap up a 17-2 tech fall of Hunter Mullins to give the Huskers the final margin. Kris Williams started the match with a 9-4 decision over Trent Olson at 125 pounds. No. 6 Colton McCrystal also won a decision over Sma Turner, 7-3, while Eric Schultz scored his first dual win with a 7-3 decision over Chaz Polson. The Cowboys got wins from Montorie Bridges at 133 pounds, No. 3 Bryce Meredith at 141 and Kyle Pope at 174 pounds. ALL-TIME VS. WVU Nebraska leads the all-time series against West Virginia, The Huskers won the first seven matches in the series, and both of the last two. WVU s one win over Nebraska came in the season.
