DuringtheKeepWayneCountyBeautifulinitiativeECAmemberswereamongthe firsttoparticipateintheadoptahighwayprogram.whenthetroopsreturned homefromdessertstorm;ecaplacedyellowribbonsoneachtelephonepole, treeandlightpoleenteringwaynecounty. In1987whentheRonaldMcDonaldHouse(TheHouseThatLoveBuilt)wasbuilt ingreenvillenc,ecamembersfinishedoneoftheroomsatacostof$5, andpledgedanother$5,000.00in1998torefurnishtheroom. WhenGoldsboroturned150yearsoldin1997theassociationdonated150books tosixwaynecountyschoolstargetinggrades2through8toassistwithmeeting thestateabcrequirementforreading. In1999ECAmembersdonated12handmadebirdhouseswithcarvedbirdsto decoratetheannualnationalchristmastreeasarequestfromnorthcarolina s firstlady,mrs.carolynhunt. EachyearECAmembersdonatetoSamaritanPurse(ThePowerofaSimpleGift) byfillingshoeboxes.theseshoeboxesarefilledwithschoolsupplies,toys, hygienearticles,candies,etc.forchildrenaroundtheworldtosharetheloveof JesusChristandtobringthemjoyandhappinessatChristmas. Followingherpresentationtheawardsprogramandrecognitionsweregiven. West Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Cherokee Reservation, Clay, Cleveland, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Yancey CherokeeCountyintheWestDistrictofNorthCarolinaisproudtoannounce resurgenceinecamembershipduringthelastyear.thecountyhasgrownfrom two clubs to four, largely to the tireless efforts of the county council president Robin Johnson. The Bizzy Bees and the Grape Creek Clubs have offered much encouragement and support for the newest additions in our county, Unaka and TexanaClubs. TheBizzyBeesECAhasadoptedakindergartenandfirstgradeclassatMartin s CreekElementarySchoolinCherokeeCounty.Booksarereadtothestudentsby ECA members and then donated to the class on special days during the school year.favorsaregiventobothteachersandstudentsdenotingwhateverholidayis beingcelebratedatthetime. Grape Creek ECA is planning to hold a workshop on making the Cathedral Windowsquiltpattern.MadelynRose,whowonfirstplaceforherbeautifulquilt usingthispatternduringthedistrictculturalartscontestandsecondplaceatthe statemeetinglastyear,willbedemonstratingthetechnique. Texana ECA, as well as the other clubs, has assembled a basket of hand made itemstoberaffledoffinthecounty.texana sbaskethasabeautifulhandbagand matchingcheckbookmadecompletelyfromducktapetheproceedswillbeused tofundcountyecaactivities. Unaka, the other ECA club established in Cherokee County last year has their membersbusylearningthemountainfolkartofquilting.thenameofthequilting classforunakawillbe CottonTheoryQuilting.
