THEME for 2016 PRADO PARK EVENT In honoring the beginning of the 155 th anniversary of our nation s remembrance of the American Civil War, the theme for our 2016 event will be the year 1860 or The Rebellion Begins! It is the spring of 1860 and the threat of Abraham Lincoln being nominated as president in the November election sparks a powder keg in the border states of Kansas and Missouri. Civilian impressions will be given the first ever opportunity to camp on the battlefield and join their combatant counter parts along with period Sutler s to form these border towns. The rebellious rebel alliance will clash with Federal Troops and fight through towns and surrounding farm land in order to try to keep this nation from division. These initial skirmishes eventually lead to the secession of 11 Southern States who form a Confederacy in April 1861 or our Please join us as we relive that turbulent time in our nations history that ignited a four year long conflict of which pitted brother against brother with 650,000 causalities and touched the lives of every man woman and child on the North American continent. This new depiction of our nation s history should be exciting as we have never attempted this before! See you in April

2 Ladies and Gentlemen representing the Southern California area General Public, Civil War Reenacting Community and Southern California area Boy, Girl and Cub Scouts: Another spectacular weekend everybody, 12 down, many, many more to go! Absolutely great job once again to our host Scout Troop 201 and Scout Master Chris Li for a brilliant performance this past weekend. The Scouts, Leaders and parents of Troop 201 s dedication and commitment to detail was a direct relation to how smooth the weekend went for everyone in attendance. Did you know, Boy Scout Troop 201, Chino, along with its Scouts, Leaders, Parents and affiliates help with and runs the following activities and venues as volunteers throughout the weekend while you are all playing Army: Registration Booth, Parking, Food and Drink Booth, Cross-cut Saw Competition, Signal Tower Construction, Tug-O-War, VIP Booth and Announcer, Flag Raising, Lowering and Retirement ceremonies, Park set-up, tear down and clean up! Wow, that s a lot! Woo hoo, you guys are awesome and it was a pleasure working with you once again. Everyone likes to brag about how big their event is for example Biggest event west of the Mississippi, Largest event on the West Coast etc. etc.! No need for me to go into any of that. I am though extremely proud to announce that this year s event contributed the largest contribution the SCCWA has ever presented to the Eagle Scout Scholarship Foundation in the past 12 years, enough said! The Scout battle on Saturday at 3:00 pm was huge with the addition of the Sunday Scout Battle at 2:00 being well received for its first year! 12 months until the next engagements Scouts, see you on the field. PRADO REGIONAL PARK CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENT (April 1-3, 2016) Our 13 th annual event will be held on April 1-3, 2016 or the first weekend of April next year. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Note: Easter and Spring Break are the week just prior to this event! Thank you to the following for without their help, this year s event would not have been possible: Overall C.S. Forces Event Coordinator representing the 1 st Division, Army of Northern Virginia: General Keith Harriott ph# (909) , # KeithHarriott@HotMail.com Overall U.S. Forces Event Coordinator representing the 1 st Division, Army of the Potomac: General John Maurais ph# (714) , # LtGenJGM@Yahoo.com Overall Civilian Coordinator - Steve Pavich ph# (714) , spavich@socal.rr.com If any of you re-enators are wondering why the SCCWA continues to turn to these three gentlemen year after year for their help in volunteering their time with this event, listen up, here is your answer. Behind the scenes, there are health and safety concerns that are reviewed and discussed (all year long). These men are briefed on updates on permits and new requirements for both fire department concerns and park department policies (all year long). Battle scenarios developed for this annual event are the responsibility of these men along with the successful camp placement and proper fire lanes for all (you) re-enactors. In other words, I rely on these men for (your) health and safety as well as supplying (you) and the general public successful battle engagements that is the life blood of this or any other re-enactment event. These men were chosen for their positions six years ago because of their neutrality, dedication to cause, professionalism and respect for this event and future of our hobby.

3 Yes, there are always going to be those that think they can do a better job but frankly, this event has been a success for the past 12 years and I am of the notion not to try and fix what is not broken. Hope you understand my meaning I would like to take this opportunity to thank Keith, John and Steve for volunteering their precious time to help in coordinating this event for the re-enacting community, General Public and Scouting Community for which it exists. In my opinion, you are the reason for the success of this event gentlemen and it has been a privilege to have had you on my staff for the past 6 years plus. I am looking forward to having you in your respective positions for the next 6 years and beyond. My hat is off to you gentlemen Special thanks to: Scouts, Leaders and parents of Troop 201. DeeDee McFarland for getting the lighting for our first ever outdoor dance and second Women s Tea! All the women who helped DeeDee with the Tea. Kim Fradella for her help with the programs. Jackie Morgan for those great cookies you make for the Women s Tea. Susan Ogle and Karen Frey for your help with the Women s Tea. Mark Cox for his help as announcer for the event. (Great for knots and lashing merit badge) Also, if you were not aware, the Civil War re-enactment is a great way to achieve the BSA American Heritage Merit Badge. (See your local Merit Badge Councilor for further details) WHAT TO BRING Prado Regional Park is the largest regional park in the state of California at 2,200 acres and possibly one of the most beautiful. Please bring some comfortable shoes as the event and battlefield is at least ¼ mile from the parking lot and it s a bit of a walk. There is handicapped parking and access for all those with appropriate plaques. It does get cold at night so bring a light jacket! Also, it might be advantageous to bring a folding chair, umbrella and/or E-Z up as the battles generally last for approximately 1 hour and there is no seating or natural shade along the 800 yards of split rail fence that lines the battlefield. (See attached program for Schedule of Events) RV FULL HOOK-UP CAMPING - Prado Park contains a 75 unit Full Hook-up camping facility and there are still spaces available. For more information about a camping space for the weekend, please call Prado Park for a reservation at: (909) DRY CAMPING - The Park will also offer a limited number of Dry Camping spaces for this event. (Dry Camping refers to parking on the grass with no hook-ups) If you would like more information or to make reservation for Dry Camping please call the park at: (909) General Admission (Single Day) $12.00 per person 12 years and older. $6.00 per person 2-11 years.

6 Kids 2 years of age and under free admission $10.00 per vehicle entrance fee into the park is separate from event fee. General Admission (RV Campers/Weekend Pass) $20.00 per person 12 years and older. $10.00 per person 2-11 years. Kids 2 years of age and under free admission $10.00 per vehicle entrance fee into the park is separate from event fee. Senior Citizens and Veterans with Military ID - $5.00 per person for the day either Saturday or Sunday. NON PROFIT CORPORATION - Just what is a non-profit educational corporation and who benefits from its efforts and donations? A tax exempt corporation or (501c3) must first be worthy of the designation by its performance and merit as a non-profit educational corporation. Tax exempt status is achieved through the programs provided to the general public. Applications must be filed with both state and federal tax boards and once qualified; the organization applying must pay a sizable fee to obtain a (501c3) tax identification number. This tax I.D. number, if awarded, may then be applied to discounts provided by local government agencies if available in order to create non-profit events. A non-profit or tax exempt organization may only provide donations or funds to another non-profit organization such as the Boy Scouts. All legal non-profit or tax exempt organizations must be incorporated and make their tax I.D. number available to the general public/re-enactors or have it clearly posted. If you are wondering where you re hard earned efforts as re-enactors go and just who benefits from an event like the Prado Regional Park event, just look for the sponsoring entities tax I.D. number on the event flyer or paperwork. Frankly, if there is no tax I.D. number present, the event organizing entity is raising funds for profit and not bound to any state or federal law concerning nonprofit status. (In other words, the money generated from that type of event is not going to a charity but rather to a private individual or entity). Just thought you might be interested in knowing the motivation behind putting on a re-enactment event. If you are concerned where the money generated from your attendance ends up at any event you attend throughout the year, simply ask to see the tax I.D. number, (It must be provided). Please Google the SCCWA and its non-profit status at nonpofittax.com. It s much harder than you might think to establish tax exempt status in order to generate funding for another non- profit organization. For your information, the (SCCWA) Southern California Civil War Association INC. is a 501c3 non-profit educational corporation ID# Hope to see you all at Prado Regional Park in Chino April 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd, 2016! Sincerely, Gary Fradella President and Events Coordinator Southern California Civil War Association INC. (909) * Website address SCCWA.com 501c3 Non-profit Corporation Tax ID
