2 The Mission of La Salle Academy The mission of La Salle Academy, a rigorous college-preparatory high school, is to educate students of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds with special out-reach to those most in need. We provide a nurturing environment, which fosters spiritual, moral, intellectual, emotional and physical growth in the Roman Catholic tradition and the Lasallian spirit, as embodied in St. John Baptist de La Salle. We create experiences of community within the school and encourage each student to develop their gifts and talents for their own growth, as well as engage in the caring service of others, through its academic, extra-curricular and spiritual programs.

This booklet is your guide to all things after-school at La Salle Academy for the year. Your Lasallian experience in education, spirituality, service, and learning does not end at the bell but continues well after! Lasallian men have always been well-rounded men of the world young men who were equally as comfortable in the classroom as they were on the field, in the world and with a multitude of experiences under their belts. I implore you to take advantage of EVERYTHING we have to offer. Each different experience will be a tool in your tool belt of life helpful on college applications, in experiential knowledge, and to your overall aca-demic excellence. Skill sets like leadership, time management, project development and finding your favorite things are all found in the joining. You will find opportunities in athletics, in leadership, and in four after-school resource centers in math, science, tech and writing and so much more! You will have opportunities to join the Cardinal our Student Newspaper, the Yearbook, and our Cardinal 20 Ambassadors Team. We have a Comedy / Improv Team, a Video/Anime Team, a Green Team, our Ministry Team, a Debate Team, our Cooper Union Inventor Team, and even the Federal Reserve Challenge. There is a Billiards Club, Chess Club, French Club and Spanish Club, and well the list goes on. What are you going to be when you grow up? 6 Academic Resource Room The Academic Resource Room is available to any student who is either struggling with a subject, or needs refreshing or more study time. Alongside our four focused tutoring rooms, this academic space is meant to encompass subjects the curriculum covers. You will have a 1 on 1 session with a teacher, where they will help you figure out what you need to study, or what you are lacking in to help you pass your next exam or paper. 7 Art Magazine The Art Magazine is published three to four times a year. It highlights artwork completed by La Salle Academy students. It explores the art included in the curriculum of La Salle as well as free drawn work. 8 Band This academic year marks the first in many decades that La Salle will have a band, reviving a great Lasallian tradition. The La Salle Academy Band was the oldest extra-curricular activity at our school. It played at pro-union and anti-slavery rallies during the Civil War. Because of the band, La Salle began our now-annual tradition of marching in the St. Patrick s Day parade. The band is open to all students, even those who never learned how to read music or play an instrument. 9 Billiards Club The Billiards Club gives students who are interested in the classic game of Billiards a chance to play. Whether a beginner or an expert, students can come out and join others who share a similar interest in the sport. It is also a great way to see math and physics in action. 10 Campus Ministry Leadership Team The heart of Campus Ministry [CM] at La Salle comes from Jesus commandment to Love one another as I have loved you. Students involved in CM help to coordinate the liturgical activities in the school. They also participate and organize community service, including volunteering at soup kitchens, senior homes, and after school tutoring programs. In addition, they hold various fundraisers collecting canned food, clothing, and financial donations for other non-profit organizations. 11 The Cardinal Newspaper The Cardinal is La Salle Academy s student newspaper. It features in-depth articles detailing student life and events as well as world and regional news. With its reports on sports, culture, and in-school events, The Cardinal works to promote a sense of community within the school s student body. It meets once a week. 12 Cardinal 20 Student Ambassadors The Cardinal 20 Ambassador program is a unique leadership opportunity for students to become the official representatives of La Salle Academy. Students are trained and grow to become excellent public speakers and school leaders. They have the incredible responsibility of helping potential new students and families feel like La Salle is their home. The Cardinal 20 represent La Salle at High School Fairs, Open Houses, and during Shadow Days. 13 Chess Club The main purpose of the Chess Club is to provide students with an intellectual challenge that is entertaining for its members and to challenge novices to improve through learning strategy and psychological maneuvering. Each chess piece has its own personality that can be seen in moves that will force the opponent to counter move to the player s advantage. Both teachers and students are welcomed to join. 14 College & Career Connection Club Although many decisions about college are made during senior year, it is never too early to start thinking about your academic future! For many students, the college process is exciting, and at times can also be overwhelming. Preparing for college early can help you feel less stressed when making post-secondary plans. The goal of this club is to help you become college-ready and to be knowledgeable about the opportunities available to you. The club will also feature professional guest speakers and trips to college and university campuses. Open to all students interested in learning about the college process and exploring career tracks. 15 Comedy Club Do you like to laugh? Have you ever wondered what makes certain things funny? Do you like ponies? If you answered yes to any of these questions, come and join us at the Comedy Club where we will explore comedy in all its glorious variety. Most importantly, we will study and practice the fundamentals of improvisational comedy and develop our very own improv comedy team. 16 Debate Team The Debate Team focuses on improving students ability to research and organize information, think critically, and speak in public. Team members will learn the basics of argumentation and debate through regular team practices. Students who enjoy the debates and are active members will compete in the Catholic National Forensic League and various competitions in the city. 17 The Federal Reserve Challenge Team This club is designed to get students ready to compete in the High School Fed Challenge, a national competition that is conducted in a series of rounds from March through April. Participants will meet weekly to learn about real-world economics from a distinguished La Salle alumnus, Thomas Flattery 59, who spent a part of his career working for The Federal Reserve Bank of New York. During the competition, the Federal Reserve Challenge Team will play the role of monetary policymakers by analyzing economic conditions and recommending a course for monetary policy. The Team will also take trips to financial institutions around the city, including the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to visit the gold vault. 18 French Club The French Club fosters students interests in French culture. It also examines cities and countries throughout the continents, historically influenced by France. Members organize field trips to restaurants, museums, and French-influenced cities each year. Members also view movies, learn French songs, and the French language. The club also raises and donates money to communities in financial need due to disasters. The club also aspires to visit Lasallian schools during its travels to exchange cultural and educational perspectives. 19 The Green Team An organic growing/sustainability program was instituted at La Salle in October The program utilizes hydroponic/aeroponic technology which essentially grows produce and plants without using soil using a system which delivers nutrients through a mineral and water based solution. The mineral/ water solution is pumped through the tower garden at regular intervals to nourish the plants. The tower growing system introduces the students to concepts in the traditional science disciplines chemistry, biology, and earth sciences as well as to the developing disciplines of sustainability, organic growing and green technologies. The program also gives students the opportunity to learn about nutrition and healthy eating by utilizing the fresh vegetables and produce that they are able to grow. The program has also expanded and started a soil garden from seeds. Students compare soil growth without any additives such as hormones or pesticides. Students involved in the Green Team will also be in charge of managing and maintaining the school s roof top garden and the recycling program. 20 Intramural Basketball Intramural Basketball gives students the opportunity to bond with one another over a noncompetitive series of games. Teams are organized by homerooms. Doubleheaders are scheduled once a week until all teams have played each other once. A tournament is then scheduled and the champions receive trophies. The Freshman division occurs in the fall and Upperclassmen division takes place in the spring. This league is open to the entire student body. 21 High School Innovators Program at Cooper Union Under the direction of Cooper Union, La Salle is developing a Makerspace where students can create and invent using engineering tools. The Makerspace will include 30 printers, scanners, and computers that will all assist in helping the students explore and create in various areas, including digital fabrication, electronics, robotics, physical computing, game design, or programming. Every semester, two groups of La Salle students will work on symbiotic engineering projects as part of the Makerspace Collaboration with Cooper Union. Two undergraduates and a faculty member from Cooper Union will be on site at La Salle weekly to drive the program. 22 La Salle READS La Salle READS is a program at La Salle Academy that emphasizes the importance of reading. Every summer each class will be required to read a set of three or four books per student as outlined by the English Department. With school s return from the summer vacation, the student must be ready to discuss the ideas in the required books as well as have a one-page summery on each book read. Those who have come back from summer vacation having read six books or more (from an approved list provided by the English department) will be named La Salle READERS and will be invited to the presidential luncheon at the end of the month as well as be awarded the gift of a scholarship. Finally the person who reads the most books in each grade will receive an additional stipend. This program will continue throughout the year. 23 La Salle WORKS The goal of La Salle WORKS is to prepare our students to pursue the countless career opportunities that New York City has to offer. Through this dedicated internship program, La Salle Academy realizes the importance of the work experience. By dedicating themselves to this program, students earn an amazing opportunity to pursue their interests and prepare themselves for college and the professional world. In this program, students learn the proper business etiquette and skills necessary to enter a professional New York City work environment. Over the years, La Salle Academy has been proud to see its students earn internships and apprenticeships with a variety of professional organizations. In preparation, students learn how to prepare for a job interview, produce quality resumes, and develop personal networking skills. 24 The La Salle Literary Magazine The Literary magazine is a yearly published collection of poems, essays, and stories. It features work ranging from the Freshman class to the AP English Senior Class. 25 Math Club & Mu Alpha Theta (MATH) Participation in the Math Club is a requirement to be considered for Mu Alpha Theta. Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society. Members of Mu Alpha Theta are students who have completed the equivalent of two years of college preparatory mathematics (ie. Algebra I and Geometry) and have completed or are enrolled in a third college preparatory mathematics course, providing their Math G.P.A. is at least 3.0. Students may become Associated of Mu Alpha Theta after completing Algebra I with at least a 3.0 average. Students will be initiated into Mu Alpha Theta in the fall semester. Students do not need to be members of Mu Alpha Theta to be members of the Math Club. Members of the Math Club will meet weekly. The first meeting of the month is required for Mu Alpha Theta members. There will be two types of meetings: tutoring meetings and competition preparation meetings. The ultimate goal for Math Club is to have students work towards being competition-level ready, while providing service to others. Students will have fun preparing for math and learning interesting facts and techniques that make math accessible for all. 26 Math Resource Center The La Salle Academy Math Resource Center provides after school curricular assistance to all La Salle students in the area of mathematics including, but not limited to, Integrated Algebra, Algebra 2, and Trigonometry. This includes tutoring, project development, homework assistance, and test-preparation. 27 National Honor Society Tutoring The purpose of the National Honor Society s existence is to stimulate the desire to render service, create enthusiasm for scholarship and to develop character in the students who are members. Those individuals who accept the invitation for the National Honor Society must work throughout their junior year to fulfill the requirements of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Throughout this candidacy, students are carefully monitored, and in the fourth quarter of their junior year those who have successfully demonstrated their qualifications to be members of the National Honor Society are formally inducted into the Society. The main function of the Society s service is to tutor students who are experiencing academic difficulty. These are primarily freshmen, although students in other levels may request a tutor and will be accommodated whenever a tutor is available. 28 Photography Club The Photography Club is open to any student who wants to learn about all aspects of photography, share their own photography, go on a field trip, and learn about the basics of Photoshop. The club consists of a very supportive group of students who love photography. Beginners are especially welcome. A still camera is required anything from disposable cameras to any type of digital camera, including phone cameras, can be used. 29 Science Resource Center The La Salle Academy Science Resource Center provides after school assistance to all La Salle students in the discipline of the Natural and Physical Sciences, and includes tutoring, project development, homework assistance, and test-preparation, including for any / all Regents in science. 30 Spanish Club The Spanish Club explores the rich history, culture, and traditions of Latin America, the Spanish Caribbean, and Spain. The Spanish Club uses trips to restaurants to acquaint the student with the many different Hispanic cuisines. The Spanish Club gives students the opportunity to be exposed to the vast wealth of Spanish, Hispanic, and Latin American Cultures. 31 Student Council The Student Council is elected by their peers to be representatives of the student body as a whole. They are leaders who serve as liaisons between the students and administration. They voice student concerns and suggestions. In addition, they organize various events for the school. They also serve as ambassadors for visitors, showcasing all our school has to offer and speaking about their experience as a student. They commit a great deal of time and are extremely dedicated to their school community. The group is comprised of the Student Council Executive Board, which is the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Junior Class President and Sophomore Class President, as well as the student homeroom representatives (two from each homeroom) who are elected at the beginning of the year. 32 Tech Resource Center The Tech Resource Center (TRC) will be available after school for students to receive technical assistance and technical education as well as complete homework, study and unwind. MODERATOR: DAY OF WEEK: TIME: 2 ROOM NUMBER: 32

33 Writing Resource Center The Writing Resource Center provides one-on-one tutoring for any student in the school community working on any kind of writing for any subject area in any stage of development. We will work with you on writing issues such as organization, citations, thesis statements and grammar, and we help you learn how to edit and proofread your own writing. Our mission is not just to produce a better piece of writing; it s to produce a better writer that will carry over throughout their current and future academic career. Our individual sessions are scheduled approximately fifteen minutes each. 34 Yearbook Club The Yearbook club designs and produces the yearbook for the each class. Participating students learn online design and digital photography while creating a memory of La Salle that will be shared by all. 36 Baseball The seasoned baseball team is a school favorite at La Salle. Our baseball teams were the City Champions in 1941, 1960 and 2000 and There are junior varsity and varsity level teams available at La Salle. Our teams are highly competitive and compete in playoff competitions every year. In the academic year, our junior varsity team won the city championship in the class A division, while varsity lost in the semifinals. 37 Basketball La Salle is the proud owner of one of the greatest basketball traditions in New York City. Our students have been competing on the court since 1906 a mere 10 years after Dr. James Naismith invented the sport in Springfield, Mass. La Salle has produced seven NBA players, including Dick McGuire 43, Ed Bartells 44, Tom Owens 67, John Roche 67, Ed Elisma 93, Shammgod Wells 95, and Ron Artest 97. La Salle also boasts 11 city championships 1914, 1915, 1916, 1946, 1954, 1960, 1962, 1967, 1971, 1997 and And we are still going strong in the academic year, both our freshmen and junior team won the CHSAA B division city championships, while varsity lost in the semi-finals. 38 Bowling Although our East Village school is noted for our baseball and basketball programs, La Salle s bowling program is gaining in prominence. Dedicated to the building of school community through sports, La Salle s bowling team continues to grow. Junior varsity and varsity teams practice and compete in locations throughout Manhattan and Queens. Junior varsity lost in the first round of the playoffs, while varsity won the CHSAA A division city championship. 39 Handball La Salle offers handball, the ultimate court game, which teaches players precision and stamina. La Salle s handball team follows the rules of the U.S. Handball Association. In 2006, La Salle s handball team was the Division Champions. 40 Soccer La Salle s soccer team has been quite successful in the last decade. Speed, hand-eye coordination and heart are all skills the team acquires as it practices and competes on the field. The team plays in the fall semester and practices every day throughout the season. In the academic year, La Salle made it to the playoffs in the quarterfinals of the Class B division. 41 Track and Field The Track and Field team is actually three sports and consists of three different seasons: Cross Country Running (Fall season), Indoor Track and Field (Winter season) and Outdoor Track and Field (Spring season). Endurance, leadership, guts and dedication are prized in these sports, and we are always looking for a few good men. La Salle s track teams of the past have been some of the best in NYC history, and we are on the rise again. Practices are held every day after school, and meets are on the weekends, (usually Saturdays). 42 Two-Sport Athlete Club La Salle Academy has a long tradition of multi-sport athletes. The athletes at La Salle that participate in more than one junior varsity or varsity sport will be part of an elite club at La Salle called the Two-Sport Athlete Club. They will be honored as such at our Sports Awards Dinner held at the end of the year. There will be special awards given as well. Students must be 3rd honors or higher in terms of academics. Varsity Club Students will achieve the Varsity Club status at La Salle Academy who have lettered in at least one varsity sport and have achieved first honors for the entire academic year.
