2 David Roach Athletic Director David Roach was appointed the university s director of athletics in July Roach, who was athletics director at Brown University, oversees Colgate s division of physical education, recreation and athletics, which provides for all aspects of the university s program in physical education, recreation, and competitive athletics from intramural and club sports to varsity competition on 25 men s and women s Division I teams. David Roach came to us with a deep understanding of the opportunities and issues in college and university athletics today, said President Rebecca Chopp. With his years of experience in the Ivy League the most frequent crossover opponents for Patriot League teams he is familiar with our athletic philosophy and heritage. As a leader who has been dealing with intercollegiate athletics nationally he understands how Colgate, with its emphasis on balancing excellence in academics and athletics, can be a national model of a liberal arts university. Roach, 56, became the eighth director of athletics in Colgate s history. During his first year, three Colgate athletic teams participated in NCAA Tournaments and captured two Patriot League titles. He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the National Collegiate Director of Athletics. He is a member of the Hamilton Club and has initiated agreement with Daktronic Sports Marketing to enhance Colgate's athletic scoreboards and overall look of athletic venues. A native of Waterbury, Conn., Roach graduated from Springfield College in 1971, and has a Master of Science degree in Physical Education from Springfield (1972). Roach was named the 13th athletic director at Brown University in He was responsible for revitalizing the Brown athletic program, overseeing the resurgence of its athletic teams while balancing the budget and launching an ambitious marketing, promotional and community involvement campaign. During Roach s tenure as athletic director, Brown teams captured 62 Ivy League or Eastern Championships, made 36 NCAA Tournament appearances and won eight National Championships, including Brown s first four NCAA Championships. In 2002, Brown s athletic program was honored by US News & World Report as one of the Top 20 Athletic Programs in the nation. Brown s athletic department was also honored in by the Rhode Island Sports Council as Rhode Island s Outstanding Sports Organization for contributions to, and support of, Rhode Island sports tradition. In his role as Brown s director of athletics, Roach oversaw the department of athletics and physical education. He had responsibility for hiring and supervising more than 100 athletic department employees, including coaches of 37 varsity and several club sports teams with more than 900 student-athletes. Roach created Brown s first student-athletic advisory board, and implemented a sports marketing and promotions program that includes a new athletic logo and corporate sponsorship program. Roach returned to Brown, where he spent eight years ( ) as the women s swim coach, after a successful coaching stint at the University of Tennessee, where his women s swimming teams won 85 percent of their meets in his four years ( ). During his tenure at Tennessee, the program improved from 39th to 4th at the NCAA Division I Championship. In eight years at the helm of the Brown women s swim program, Roach took the Bears into the national spotlight. Inheriting the last place team in the Ivy League prior to his arrival, Roach guided Brown to conference championships in 1983, 1984 and During his tenure in Providence, Roach s teams amassed a record of and, in 1985 and 1986, Brown won the 31-team Eastern Championship under his direction. In 1988 he was inducted into the Rhode Island Aquatic Hall of Fame, and in 1989 he was inducted into the Brown University Hall of Fame. In 1985 he was named coach of the United States National Swimming Team in the World University Games in Kobe, Japan. Roach was a member of the Springfield College men s varsity swim team that was New England Conference champion three consecutive years. He was the team s co-captain in 1971 and an assistant coach in After graduation, he served for three years in the United States Marine Corps before becoming the head coach at the New Mexico Aquatic Club in Las Cruces, N.M., and for the New Mexico State University Men s Water Polo Team. Roach has also served in a number of teaching and administrative positions, including assistant aquatics director at Brown ( ), aquatic director of the Brown Sports Camp ( ), assistant aquatics director at New Mexico State University ( ), and athletic officer in the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing ( ). Roach is a former member of the Springfield College Corporation and Springfield Hall of Fame Selection Committee. He is a former president of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges and is a former member of the ECAC Award of Valor Committee. He was the chairman of the Ivy League Committee on Administration in and , and has served as the liaison for the Ivy League football, men s and women s basketball, and field hockey coaches during his tenure. In addition, Roach has served on the executive committees for EIWA Wrestling and ECAC Ice Hockey. Roach was a member of the NCAA Championship Competition Cabinet for five years ( ), and was the chair of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Committee from Roach is the former president of the I-AA Athletic Directors Association ( ) and the former chair of I-AA AD s Academic All-Star Team Selection Committee. In 1999, he received the Gen. Robert Neyland Award from the All-America Football Foundation. He and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three daughters: Elizabeth, Michelle and Alexandra Colgate Football

3 Kevin Hatcher Senior Associate Athletic Director for External & Internal Relations Kevin Hatcher was appointed to the position of senior associate athletics director for external and internal relations in July. Hatcher came to the Colgate campus from the University of Texas at El Paso, where he was associate athletic director for administration and university relations. Hatcher has been an administrator in the field of intercollegiate athletics for 10 years, having previously held positions in the Pac-10, Big Ten and Western Athletic Conferences. While at Texas-El Paso, Hatcher was responsible for external relations, the athletic hall of fame chair, compliance program supervisor, event manager, instructor in sports administration, program supervisor for several sports, and varsity club director. Before joining the UTEP staff, Hatcher served as Director of Student Athletic and Academic Affairs at the University of Southern California between July 1998 and January In this role he was tutor/learning assistant program director, medical insurance coordinator, job program director, summer camp administrator and anti-gambling program coordinator. Hatcher came to Southern Cal in 1997 as compliance coordinator, and served in that position until July After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1992, Hatcher worked as an account executive at Office Depot and later as a residential counselor for the H.E.L.P. Group in Sherman Oaks, California. He took his first intercollegiate position as sports camp director and external relations intern at California State University Northridge in While pursuing his master s degree in Kinesiology (Sports Management and Communications emphasis) at the University of Michigan, Hatcher was a compliance assistant for one year, and later was named interim compliance coordinator before moving to Southern California in Hatcher received his Doctorate of Education from the University of Texas at El Paso in He was the recipient of the NCAA Ethnic Minority Scholarship Award in Janet A. Little Senior Associate Athletic Director Janet Little s administrative responsibilities at Colgate span two decades, during which time she has assumed multiple responsibilities. Her primary oversight areas currently include recreational sports and the physical education program. Little was hired by Colgate in 1977 as the head women s volleyball coach and athletic trainer. She came from Indiana State University where her collegiate coaching career began as the head coach of women s volleyball while she completed a Master of Science degree with an emphasis on Athletic Training. As the head volleyball coach at Colgate through 1995, Little established and maintained a successful winning tradition in the volleyball program. During her tenure at Colgate, she has also coached softball and served administratively in a broad spectrum. In addition to her Master s degree, she holds a Bachelor s degree in music from Fredonia 72 and certification in physical education from Cortland State. Shondell Reed Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Shondell Reed was appointed assistant director of athletics for compliance in August of He came to Colgate after completing an internship in the compliance office at the Ohio State University athletics department. Reed assisted in the planning of compliance education meetings, worked with the NCAA and Big Ten rules and also updated the interpretations and secondary infractions datebases. Before working at Ohio State, Reed served as the marketing and promotions intern at the University of Calfornia Berkeley. While he was there, Reed coordinated and directed fan-oriented events, intiated and negotiated sponsorship agreements and served as the marketing representative for the women's basketball team. In addition, Reed directed the Gridiron Classic, the principal fundraising golf tournament for the football program. He holds a master of arts degree in sports management from the University of San Francisco and juris doctorate from Seattle University's School of Law. He earned a bachelor of arts in communications/journalism from California State University Fullerton. Frank White Assistant Athletic Director Frank White is in his eighth year as assistant athletic director. He joined the Colgate administrative staff after serving four years as President and CEO of Mid-State Raceway, Inc in Vernon, New York from His duties include event management for home games, marketing, promotions, corporate sponsorships and scheduling of facilities. He has served as Chair of the ECAC Ice Hockey Officiating Committee and is a former member of the NCAA men s and women s ice hockey rules committee. Prior to his stint as President of Vernon Downs, White served as Vice-President and General Manager of the facility from White is a trustee of the Oneida Savings Bank where is chairs the investment committee and is a member of the audit committee. He is a former member of the Finance Committee for Community Memorial Hospital, and a board member and coach of various youth sports including hockey, soccer and baseball. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hartwick College in He and his wife, Sally, are the parents of three sons, Chris 21, Jamie 18 and Tyler 14. Patriot League Champion

4 Robert D. Cornell Director of Athletic Communications Bob Cornell enters his 30th year as Colgate's Director of Athletic Communications. He is responsible for all publicity and public relations matters concerning the Raider athletic department. The athletic communications office handles the compilation and distribution of all information on 25 intercollegiate sports, encompassing both men's and women's athletics. He is the primary contact for the football, men s basketball and softball programs. Cornell has worked 342 consecutive football games which is the fifth longest active streak in the nation among sports information directors. Prior to being named sports information director in May, 1976, Cornell held positions as Assistant Sports Information Director at Princeton for two years and Sports Information Director at the University of New Haven for six years. In July of 2001, Cornell was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors Association Hall of Fame. On Sept. 19, 2003 he was inducted into the SUNY-Cobleskill Athletic Hall of Fame, and on Dec. 4, 2003 he received the Scoop Hudgins Outstanding Sports Information Award from the All-American Football Foundation. During his career in the sports information field, he has served as a press liaison for numerous NCAA and ECAC championships and regional events, including Media Coordinator of the NCAA Division I Golf Championship in He has served on the press liaison staff for the U.S. Olympic Committee at the 1984 Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles and the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary. In addition, he has been on the press liaison staff at four U.S. Olympic Festivals ( 81, 82, 83, 87). He has served on the Site Selection, Post-Graduate Scholarship, and Ethics Committees of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Cornell is a past president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Sports Information Directors Association, and the 1992 recipient of the Irving T. Marsh Service Bureau Award, presented annually to the sports information director, who has contributed the most to the work of the Bureau during the year and throughout his or her career. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Cornell received his B.A. in Business Administration from the University of New Haven and an AAS in Business Administration from SUNY-Cobleskill. He holds membership in several professional organizations including the Football Writers Association of America. 5 Sports Medicine Staff Marty Erb Coordinator for Sports Medicine Services Marty Erb begins his 33rd year at Colgate University. He assumes his new role as Coordinator for Sports Medicine Services after serving as Head Athletic Trainer the past 30 years. He will continue to be administratively responsible for the operation of the Colgate Sports Medicine program, as well as taking on additional responsibilities within the athletic department. As an athletic trainer, Erb has specific responsibilites with women's soccer, softball, track and field, tennis and men's rowing. A native of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., he is a 1972 graduate of Bucknell University with a degree in Biology. Erb was awarded the Master s Degree in Physical Education from Indiana University the following year. He is a former President of the New York State Athletic Trainers Association, and currently serves as Chair of the NYSATA Hall of Fame Committee. He has spearheaded a successful effort to have athletic trainers recognized statewide by getting legislation passed to designate Athletic Trainer Week in New York. He is currently serving an appointment as a member of the New York State Committee on Athletic Trainers, a subcommittee of the State Board of Medicine. Erb is a past recipient of the Maroon Council Award and Hamilton High School s Booster of the Year award. In 2001 he was named Outstanding Athletic Trainer by the All-American Football Foundation. In January of 2003, he was given the Thomas J. Sheehan Sr. Award by the New York State Athletic Trainers Association, it s highest honor. Training and Conditioning Magazine named Erb its May/June (2003) Above the Call winner for exemplary dedication and devotion to the profession of athletic training. He is married to the former Jane Murphy and they are the parents of two sons, Ryan (26) and Blake (21). Steve Chouinard Head Athletic Trainer Steve Chouinard was recently appointed Head Athletic Trainer of the Colgate Sports Medicine program after serving as Assistant and Associate Athletic Trainer for the past nine years. He will be supervising a staff of six professionals and 17 students, and will coordinate the day-to-day operation of the sports medicine program. He will continue to have primary athletic trainer responsibility with the men's hockey program, as well as working with football, women's lacrosse, swimming and women's rowing. He came to Colgate from Lehigh where he served as an assistant athletic trainer. Prior to Lehigh, Chouinard spent one year as the graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Massachusetts, and one year as an assistant in the Boston College Sports Medicine Department. A certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) since 1993, Chouinard received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and athletic training from the University of New Hampshire in He resides in Hamilton with his wife, Jennifer. Patriot League Champion Dr. Merrill Miller Team Physician Dr. Merrill Miller is in her 25th season as team doctor for the Colgate athletic teams. She has been hailed in the "Medics" section of People magazine as the country's first and only female head physician for a Division I or I-AA college football team. A native of Kew Gardens, N.Y., she is a 1967 graduate of Cornell University. She did her medical training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the University of Buffalo, and the SUNY-Health Science Center in Syracuse, where she maintains a faculty position in adolescent medicine/pediatrics. She is Director of Health Services for Colgate s 2,800 students, co-chairperson of Colgate s Health Sciences Advisory Committee, a Board member of SOMAC Ambulance Corps, a recipient of the Maroon Council and Senior Class Awards, and past president of Community Memorial Hospital. Dr. Ivan Gowan Team Surgeon Dr. Ivan Gowan is in his 22nd season as the orthopaedic consultant for the Colgate athletic program. A native of Candor, New York, he graduated from Colgate in He went to medical school at Cornell University Medical Center from He did his internship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from and an orthopaedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City from He also did a fellowship in Sports Medicine in Los Angeles in working with professional athletes in the area. In July of 1984, Dr. Gowan opened a private orthopaedic practice in Hamilton, N.Y. He is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Chuck Monteith Assistant Athletic Trainer Chuck Monteith was named assistant athletic trainer on Colgate's Sports Medicine staff in June. He is no stranger to the Colgate staff having worked previously for the Raiders as an intern during the season. His primary responsibility will be with Colgate football. For the past two years, Monteith has been enrolled in the Ithaca College graduate program, and earned his master's degree in exercise and sports science in May. While studying for his master's degree, he held athletic training duties at Cornell University. He provided medical coverage for men's lacrosse and sprint football. During his internship at Colgate, Monteith worked with field hockey and men's basketball, and porvided non-traditional season sports coverage. He is a 2002 graduate of SUNY Cortland, where he graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor degree in athletic training. He provided coverage of the men's and women's basketball teams, and completed an internship with the Cornell football program. Monteith is a certified member of the National Athletic Training Association. 135
