4 Personal and Professional Development: The SPARE Model It is our department mission to educate and inspire through athletics. This includes not just our student-athletes and fans but staff, administration, coaches as well. The SPARE (Self-Awareness, Planning, Accountability, Research, Evaluation) Model for Professional and Personal Development, developed by Felicia Hall & Associates, provides structure for individuals to proactively pursue this. Each month, this page will feature how a staff, administrator or coach utilizes this model. This month s featured staff member is Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. Thanks to Bubba for sharing the way he uses the SPARE Model. Ochuko s Take: Obviously, it was an honor and pleasure to pick the brain of Bubba Cunningham. I not only look up to him because of his position as the Ochuko Jenije Director of Athletics, but also as the man he is. From this interview, I could see why he has been very successful in his personal and occupational life. Bubba seems to have a solid foundation in his beliefs of how he wants his path of life to go. The key point that I took away from speaking with Bubba is to write down goals, wants, and everything you would like to happen in life. I have been told that plenty of times. But Bubba challenged me to go in depth with this exercise. From career goals to vacation goals and everything in between. He said that you will find yourself working towards those goals and achieving them. I have since done so. I will keep you updated on my progress. To offer your take on the SPARE in a future newsletter, please contact Ochuko Jenije at ojenije@ unc.edu. SPARE Model: Bubba Cunningham S: Self-Awareness [Purpose: reconcile self perception with the perception of others.] Resource: Myers-Briggs Comments: I believe that it is a very useful tool. It allows me to better understand my personality, and better understand colleagues. When you better understand colleagues, you can create better work teams. In all, it helps with decision making and communication. Bubba Cunningham P: Planning [Purpose: identify a career path and then determine how to make progress along it.] Resource: The Power of Focus by Jack Canfield Comments: From reading this book, I wrote out a plan in 1995 that I have followed ever since then. I outlined my work ladder and made a blueprint of how I wanted my professional career to go. I went as in depth as what I wanted my house to be like, wife and kids, how I wanted to prioritize my free time, vacation, and travel. It was kind of like the Bucket List Mentality before the Bucket List became popular. A: Accountability [Purpose: partner with individuals who will support you, act as sounding board, share best practices.] Resource: Friends in the Industry, Outside Confidants Comments: I have established a lot of close relationships in all of the cities that I have lived. My conversations with these people are more sporadic than planned. However, whenever I speak with these people, we pick up right where we left off. I think that these relationships should not be a scheduled process. It takes away the authenticity of the friendship. I believe they do a great job of keeping my thoughts and actions in line with what I want to accomplish in all aspects of life. R: Research [Purpose: keep current on industry developments via books, conferences, and certifications] Resource: Sport Business Journal, Athletic Business, and other athletic business and industry journals Comments: I try to read a lot and read a lot of our industry s journals. The only way to get better in life is to continue to learn. You always have to be learning. If you are not learning, you are not living. The more you read, the more you learn, and the more you want to learn. That is the beauty of working in athletics. You have to constantly learn and adapt to the changes of athletics. E: Evaluation [Purpose: receive performance feedback; identify strengths and possible areas for improvement.] Resource: Disney Institute; Feedback from colleagues, co-workers, and other individuals Comments: I love feedback. I love to see where and what I can improve on. I am not afraid of it. I want the environment here at North Carolina to be open, enthusiastic, and powerful. I believe that the Disney Institute is helping with this process of improving our department as a whole. Not only improving our department, but the entire institution. We, as the University of North Carolina, are trying to rebuild matters and issues that may been damaged or disrupted in the past. Athletic Department Newsletter November/December 2014 Page 5
