1 November December 2017 January 2018 S w i n g I n t o R e a d i n Y o u r L i b r a R Y Fall Book Sale The Friends of the Library will hold their fall book sale on Friday, November 3 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, November 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 5 from 12 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Senior and Disabled Center. All types of books, including fiction and non-fiction, will be on sale as well as CDs, audiobooks, DVDs, videos, and specially priced items. Admission on Friday evening is $5 and free on Saturday. On Sunday, only books will be available. Buy a Friends book sale GREEN bag for $7 and fill it with books for free. Refills are $6. Stock up and save! George G. Hanel Series Presents: Sunday, November 5, 2:00 p.m. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Martin Kellogg Auditorium The George G. Hanel Fine Arts Series returns with a performance by The Cat s Pajamas, a vocal band, in the Martin Kellogg Auditorium located at 155 Harding Avenue. Please join us for an afternoon of a cappella entertainment. Friends Wine, Beer, Cider and Cheese Social Friday, January 19 snow date January 26 This annual event will be held on Friday, January 19 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Come taste test a variety of wine, beer and cheese and enjoy the crudités. Place orders for bottles of wine or beer you liked at special prices offered only at the wine tasting event. Orders placed during the event make you eligible for a special prize. After the wine and beer tasting, participate in the teacup and silent auction. Dessert will follow. Entertainment will be provided by Jazz musician Dana Lauren. Teen Winter Craft Night Thursday, December 7, 6:30 8:00 p.m. For grades DIY some gifts for the holiday season! We ll watch a seasonal movie and sip cocoa. Children s Winter Craft Night Thursday, December 14, 6:00 7:30 p.m. Join us for a night of family fun! Use your creativity to decorate cookies. We will also make beautiful holiday decorations and gifts to keep for your family or to give to a special person. This program is recommended for ages 4 and up. Adult Winter Reading Kick-Off & Registration Swing into Reading Thursday, January 18, 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. or 4:00 7:00 p.m. Drop in between these hours or register online to receive a free gift and a chance to win the kick-off prize giveaway. Refreshments will be provided. Adults will earn a prize ticket for every book they read or listen to, which will be entered into the weekly drawings for special gifts. All tickets collected will be entered into the grand prize drawing to be held on Friday, February 23. Winter Reading Kick-Off Swing into Reading! Rainforest Lullaby Saturday, January 20, 10:30 a.m. Children, ages 4 12, are invited to journey with Animal Embassy into the night time Rainforest. Meet some living examples of the fascinating creatures that roam the Rainforest at night. A flyer with details of the Winter Reading Program will be available as of December 1. THE FRIENDS of the Lucy Robbins Welles Library is a not-for-profit organization established in 1961 to support the library both financially and through volunteers. The Friends provide funds that underwrite Library activities for all ages including the popular summer and winter reading programs, the museum and attraction passes, the Brown Bag It luncheon series, as well as sponsoring programs that could not otherwise be funded. In addition, the Friends provide funding for DVDs, reference databases, computers and other equipment that the library needs. Where did the time go? As the colder months loom, I encourage you to make the library a regular place to visit. It is not very far to get to and from anywhere in Newington and it is warm and inviting. It is filled with a large, varied collection of books, DVDS, audiobooks and more to keep you busy, thinking and entertained. The programs planned for the next three months are sure to be of interest for people of all ages. And don t forget, the library has many services you can access online from the library s website. Online classes, online databases, downloadable ebooks, streaming movies are just some of examples of what is offered from our virtual library. Also, there are several special events you won t want to miss. The Friends of the Library has its Annual Fall Book Sale on November 3rd, 4th, and 5th to be held at the Newington Senior and Disabled Center. On November 5 at 2:00 p.m. the Library Board of Trustees presents an afternoon of a cappella music with Cat s Pajamas as part of the George C. Hanel Fine Arts Series. This event will be held at Martin Kellogg Middle School. And finally, the Friends of the Library will be hosting a second winter fundraising event, the Annual Wine and Cheese Social. This event will be on January 19, 2018 at the library. Hope to see you at the library!
