2 INTRODUCTION As the number of articles published in the Bulletin has grown over the previous fifteen years, the need for a subject index has grown apace. The fifteen annual volumes have been gathered into five bound volumes, each having its own index of names. However, locating the growing number of references to the various churches, institutions, biographies, and other subjects had become increasingly difficult. Completion of the fifteenth annual volume and fifth bound volume seems an appropriate mile-post at which to stop and fill the need for such an index. An attempt was made to make the general index as truly "general" as possible. For example, though no published article has been devoted to Marian devotion, hints and examples of that subject have been indexed. Various aspects of diocesan history which appeared in many scattered articles have also been carefully noted and entered in the index. No attempt has been made to index baptismal records, death records, cemetery records, etc. as separate subjects. Such records are listed only under the name of the church or cemetery in the index of parishes, missions, stations, and cemeteries, beginning on page 18. Biographical data is indexed when it consists of a paragraph or more. Shorter notices can be found only by searching the name index of each bound volume. Similarly, sacramental registers might be considered genealogical data, but only collected data on a family would be listed in the genealogical index, on page 38. Pages in the first six annual volumes (1975 through 1980), and therefore in the first two bound volumes, were numbered in one continuous series. Subsequently, pages in each group of three annual volumes (one bound volume per such group) were numbered in a separate series. In this index, a Roman I indicates pages in the first series of page numbers, volumes I through VI, the first two bound volumes. Roman VII, X, and XIII indicate the subsequent, single-bound-volume series of page numbers. This index is being issued as the first part of Volume 16 of the Bulletin, in hopeful anticipation of resumption of the regular monthly schedule. How soon that schedule will be resumed is not yet known. Your editor hopes that this compilation is useful. -2-
