3 News From Judy Top 10 reasons why older adults should exercise 1. To increase bone density and prevent Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects some 20 million women & 5 million men and leads to more than 250,000 hip fractures each year. Exercise delays the onset of Osteoporosis by increasing bone strength. 2. To improve self-efficiency and maintain independence. One of the top concerns is becoming dependent or a burden to someone. Exercise helps older adults maintain a greater capacity to undertake the activities of daily living. 3. To increase metabolism. Strength training increases muscle mass, which elevates metabolism. This may also lead to a reduction in overall body fat percentage. 4. To maintain balance and improve reflexes to decrease falls. As we age there is a natural decline in balance & coordination, which can be postponed and even prevented with proper strength and balance training. 5. To create a sense of community or feeling of belonging. Exercise groups enhance social interactions. New friendships are also stimulated during group exercise gatherings. 6. To improve pulmonary function. Pulmonary function declines with age due to the degeneration of the vertebral disks. Physical activity, which decreases the amount of vertebral degeneration & increases the strength of the thoracic cavity, may lead to improved pulmonary function. 7. To boost mood. Exercise reduces the incidence of depression and improves self-esteem while providing a feeling of accomplishment. 8. To help prevent and regulate diabetes. Aerobic exercise has shown to be an important means of preventing and treating non-insulin-dependent diabetes by helping regulate blood glucose levels. 9. To improve flexibility, joint range of motion and functional movement. Activities that require the body to go through the full range of movement helps keep the body flexible and mobile. Circulation is also increased. 10. To improve cardiovascular strength. Cardiovascular exercise helps maintain a healthy heart and cardiovascular system reducing the risk of heart disease. Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it: Boldness has genius, power and Magic in it Love, Jutta Page 14 The woodshop will host a lasagna lunch on March 31st. The Guys will serve lunch, buss the tables and perhaps do some entertaining! All the proceeds from the luncheon will benefit the woodshop and go towards the purchase of new tools. We ve had quite a bit this year, and as much as it s a pain to drive in I can t believe how beautiful it is. It is 32 degrees but there is no wind there is only peace. I can hear the little birdies singing their songs up in the treetops, and I realize how simple life can be if we just get to this peaceful spot when life throws us a little curve. There is a pureness that comes with newly fallen snow the crisp air as we breathe it in cleanses our souls if we just let it. So very thankful for days like this thankful for our jobs, thankful for the people we serve, thankful for our loved ones and yes, even thankful for the beautiful snow. We are extremely excited about our upcoming CIVIL WAR day, scheduled for Friday, March 13th, from 9a.m. -3 p.m. A wonderful variety of activities and exhibits are planned as well as a Civil War luncheon. All are welcome to attend the event, however, we do ask that you pre-register by contacting Karen Estep at x 107. Join us on March 17th from noon to 3 p.m. for a tasty traditional St. Patrick s Day lunch and live entertainment. Cost is only $7 per person and all are welcome. Please register by calling Karen Estep at x 107. Prizes for the best dressed Leprechaun will be awarded!! Our Woodshop Lasagna Supper/Bingo fundraiser has been rescheduled for noon on Tuesday, March 31st. Our woodshop members are aiming to purchase a new lathe by July 1st, and we are hoping to help them out. Cost is only $5 and all are welcome to attend! Be sure to also save the date for our 2nd Annual Senior Expo scheduled for Friday, April 24th during the hours of 9a.m. 2 p.m. Last year we had over 50 vendors, and 400 participants in attendance! Door prizes, all day entertainment, senior friendly vendors with great information, and a delicious lunch will be provided (lunch sponsored by Tennessee State Bank). Please pre-register for this event by calling Karen Estep at x 107. One lucky person will win a big screen television, so stop by and check it out! The Senior Expo is sponsored by Sevier County ElderWatch. Have a wonderful month!! God Bless you, Jane Howes, Director I have found the cantankerous cat in the newsletter and this my entry form.

CIVIL WAR DAY Choice of: Beef Stew or Ham & Beans Cornbread Baked Apples Spice Cake Birthday Anniversary Luncheon Bring a covered dish to share! :) Senior Hiking Club Thursday March 19th Since we had such a great response to the February hike we decided that we should go ahead and start up the monthly hikes again. Remember, March weather can still be crazy, so dress in layers, bring gloves, scarves, hats, and throw in your rain gear just in case of a shower. The hikes are open to the base hiking group that signed up with Karen in February. Remember this is not the same group as last year, so if you are unsure of your status please check with Karen. She ll let you know if you are in the base group or if you are listed as an alternate. We're not going to get too wild and woolly this month, as you never know what Mother Nature has in store for us in March. (Lion? Lamb?) We will park the bus at Sugarlands Visitor Center and hit the restrooms (always a highlight), then walk over to the National Park Headquarters and visit Evans Chapel Cemetery with graves from the 1800s and early 1900s, many from the 1898 typhoid epidemic. Next we will hike out to Cataract Falls. If the late winter waters are up ("early spring" sounds better), the Falls should be especially beautiful. From there we will hike out Fighting Creek Nature Trail to see a restored cabin, as well as other points of interest. (There is a Nature Trail guide pamphlet available for purchase on-site for about a dollar - honor system, no clerk to make change.) None of this itinerary is particularly strenuous for our regulars - the nature trail has some elevation change, but no really steep places. Our picnic will be at either Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area or Mynatt Park in Gatlinburg, depending on weather and road conditions. Keep an eye on weather forecasts & prepare accordingly. See you on the 19th, Jim & Renee Page 13 Join us for Civil War Day on March 13th It will be a day of fun and information like the following 10 Civil War Facts Union Soldiers were paid $13.00 per month (unless you were a black soldier you were paid $10.00 per month.) But then you were charged up to $3.00 per month for clothing. 2. Confederate Soldiers were paid $11.00 per month. 3. Approximately 625,000 men died during the Civil War. More than the number of deaths in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Wars.COMBINED! 4. Nearly 56,000 men died in prison camps of starvation and disease. 5. The treatment of choice, for a severely damaged limb or even a broken arm or leg, was amputation. 6. There was no anesthetic during these times. So for most procedures soldiers were given a shot of whiskey and a bullet to bite down on % of soldiers were under the age of It is estimated that 400 women secretly fought in the war. 9. The cost of the war was $6.19 Billion, $146 Billion in todays dollars. 10. In 2014 the Dept. of Veterans Affairs was still paying a small pension to a surviving child of a Union Veteran. May there always be work for your hands to do, And your purse always hold a coin or two. May the sun always shine on your windowpane, And a rainbow be certain to follow each rain. May the hand of a friend always be near you, And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

He revised the design and utilized his Huey concept during the Vietnam war for the United States Army. Cashing in on patents from inventions such as the Bald Chia Pet and solar powered umbrella he coasted through the next 20 years. In 1941, Zamperini enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was deployed to the Pacific, where his plane received heavy damage during combat. He was assigned to another aircraft and told to search for missing crews, but the plane crashed due to a mechanical failure. Most of the men died during the crash, but Zamperini survived for 47 days on a raft before being captured. Zamperini spent the rest of the war in Japanese internment camps page 11 It s Baseball Time In Tennessee
