1 PowerS picks $15 Volume 6 Issue 22 December 13-22, BP Sports, LLC Best Bets are on a (66%) run Last 14 Weeks! Bowl Forecasts Start on Pg 3, Week 15 NFL Best Bets Pg 5 College Bowl Issues Special Note: Please be aware that there will be no single bowl issue covering all 39 bowl games. This week s issue will only cover the bowl games played from December (14 Bowls). The following issue (sent Dec. 19) will cover the bowl games played from December (14 Bowls). Then the final bowl issue (sent Dec. 26) will cover the bowl games played from December 31-January 1 (11 bowls). Welcome to the 4th bowl edition of Powers Picks. It is certainly a fun time of year to handicap games as you can find legit value in bowl games as long as you know what to look for. Like always, we don t characterize ourselves as strictly technical or situational handicappers. However, some of the things we look for in handicapping the bowl games are motivation factors. Is one team disappointed to be playing in this bowl (example: USC in the Sun Bowl a couple years ago) or is this team really excited to be playing in the bowl. You also have to factor in the large schedule disparities in the games involving Power 5 conference teams against Group of 5 teams as many times a 6-6 SU Power 5 conference school is far superior to a 9-3/10-2 SU Group of 5 conference school. However, the Power 5 team played a much tougher schedule which skews their season stats but also gives you value this time of year. Another thing to factor in when making your bowl selections is the travel distance to the bowl site for each school. While it doesn t necessarily affect the coaches and players so much, it does influence the fans as team s playing closer to home are likely to have the added crowd edge in what is supposed to be a neutral atmosphere. Finally, you have to pay attention to the coaching situation. Not only are you dealing with interim coaches and a lot of coaching turnover, you also have to analyze how certain coaches do in bowl games. Some coaches are terrific regular season coaches but struggle in the bowl games for whatever reason. We hope you enjoy this edition of the Powers Picks and below are some answers to any possible questions you may have regarding this issue as it is different than the regular season editions. Bowl FAQ s Why are you not doing one single bowl issue that covers all 39 games? First, there are double the amount of bowl games as there were in the 1980 s/90 s and instead of all of them being played in one week (Christmas to New Year s Day), the bowls are spread out over the course of three weeks. Therefore, we re releasing our bowl picks in three separate issues. Those releases will only cover those particular bowl games being played that week (see above). Having later, more up-to-date information should result in more accurate results. We firmly believe you need to have later information in today s day and age! I am involved in several bowls pools (both straight up and ATS) and the picks are due later this week for all 39 bowl games. What do I do and how do I get all your picks in advance for every bowl game? Check out page 3 where we have all of our early ATS picks and also straight up bowl confidence contest picks. Two years ago we finished in the Top 1,000 nationwide out of nearly a million entries in ESPN s Bowl Mania contest. Keep in mind, due to late injury news, coaching news and weather forecasts, our early picks on sides and totals could be subject to change but you will at least get an idea of where we re leaning early in the process. How do I play your star-rated picks in the bowl issue(s)? First, we will admit that most of the 1-star plays would not be included in a regular season issue. However, most of you will want action on every single bowl game for a variety of reasons and that is why we put a star-rated pick on every bowl game whether it is the side or the total. If you are someone that only likes to take part in a few games each week, then we would recommend you only play the 3-star and 4-star picks as they are clearly the strongest. If you are someone that likes to play 5-6 games a week, then the 2-stars are certainly worth your while. Basically a 1-star rating during these bowl issues would be a lean (these have gone the last 3 years in bowl season so don t just overlook them). A 2-star rating on a bowl is a strong lean while a 3-star or 4-star rating is your typical top star-rated play that you would see weekly in the regular season. Please note that the Powers Pack selections are in rotation order. Renew Early and Save!!! 2019 Powers Picks Newsletter Powers Picks Star-Rated Plays in CFB/NFL (56.3%) All-Time !!! Utah St 38 North Texas 31. Utah St has an interim coach in Frank Maile who was the co-dc as head coach Matt Wells is off to Texas Tech. That could have Utah St a little distracted in this match-up. The Aggies have already hired former coach Gary Andersen so there is no potential for Maile to get the permanent job. Utah St had a great season as they won 10 games but not one of them came against a team with a winning record (did have respectable losses at Michigan St and at Boise St). On the other side, we re buying North Texas low after 5 straight non-covers to close the season. Remarkably, North Texas was the only team in the country to out-gain every opponent this year (Not Alabama, not Clemson and not Oklahoma!) Brad Powers Bowl Confidence Contest Picks 2 Years Ago Finished No. 989 (100% percentile) out of nearly a million entries in ESPN s Bowl Mania!!! Tulane 31 UL-Lafayette 28. ULL comes in off a cover at Appalachian St in the Sun Belt Championship game as ULL actually out-gained App St but were done in by -2 TO s. Meanwhile, Tulane got to bowl eligibility on the final week of the regular season thanks to a late 2-point conversion. Both teams feature run-heavy offenses (more than 62% of time) but we trust ULL more to sustain drives as they have a big advantage on 3rd-Down. ULL converts 48% of their 3rd-Downs on offense (No. 10 in the country). Meanwhile, Tulane only converts 35% (No. 113). Do note that Tulane fired their OC after the regular season and they hired a new OC in Will Hall who was the ULL OC last year (might know player personnel). Our final trump card is that ULL was 5-1 ATS as a dog to close the season while Tulane was 0-4 ATS as a chalk vs FBS teams. Las Vegas Bowl in Whitney, NV 1H Fresno St (-4.5). Fresno St 28 Arizona St 23. Arizona St WR N Keal Harry is sitting this game out as he could be a potential first-round pick in the NFL Draft this spring. Harry had 1,088 receiving yards and his absence makes ASU a one-dimensional offense vs a Fresno St team that is No. 2 in the country in scoring defense this year. This is the very first bowl game for Herm Edwards, while Fresno St head coach Jeff Tedford is 6-3 SU in bowl games in his career. Fresno St played here earlier this year in a win and cover over UNLV and should be able to handle the Vegas distractions better. The Bulldogs were just 1-11 two seasons ago and now their Senior class has the opportunity to notch a 12th-win this season which would be a school record. Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, AL 1H Eastern Michigan (+2.5). Georgia Southern 24 Eastern Michigan 23. Eastern Michigan faced the option earlier this year and held Army to 4.0 yards per carry (2nd lowest total for Army this season). We believe Georgia Southern is worse than their 9-3 record indicates as they are No. 1 in the country in TO margin at +22 (FBS-record for fewest TO s in a season with only 5). Despite their gaudy record have actually been out-gained on the season by 18 ypg. GS should have the crowd edge here but EMU is on a ATS run as an underdog! We do feel it is an important note that we bet GS +3.5 very early in the bowl season (see page 10) but now at the current number of GS -2.5, we lean with Eastern Michigan here. Remember one of the key differences between Pros and Joes is that Pros bet numbers while Joes bet teams. 3

4 New Orleans Bowl in New Orleans, LA 2H Middle Tennessee (+7). Appalachian St 27 Middle Tennessee 23. Appalachian St has an interim coach in Mark Ivey as their head coach Scott Satterfield is taking the co-oc, the DC and strength coach with him to Louisville. Meanwhile it s the 8th bowl for Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstil and the final game between father and son as QB Brent Stockstill has had a great 4-year career and will leave ranking in the Top 30 all-time in career yards and TD passes. Note that Middle Tennessee s strength of schedule is better than expected as they played 3 SEC teams this year. Tuesday, December 18th Boca Raton Bowl in Boca Raton, FL 2H Uab (-2.5). Uab 24 Northern Illinois 19. We have a pair of conference champs squaring off here as both teams won close championship games in the final minutes. Northern Illinois head coach Rod Carey is just 0-5 SU/ATS in bowl games. The Huskies have gotten outscored by 25 ppg in those bowl games and failed to cover the spread by 18 ppg (none less than a TD). The Huskies rallied from a deficit to beat Buffalo in the MAC Championship game as QB Childers threw for 300 yards and 4 TD s. Meanwhile UAB was just happy to be in a bowl game last year and were trounced by Ohio. They re on a mission this year to finish job with a school-record 11th win. Wednesday, December 19th Frisco Bowl in Frisco, TX 1H San Diego St (+3). Ohio 27 San Diego St 26. Ohio s strength on offense is running the ball (averaging 261 rush ypg) but San Diego St boasts the No. 4 rush defense in the country allowing just 95 rush ypg. We re buying San Diego St low after going 1-6 ATS to close the season which included a pair of outright losses as double-digit favorites. Note that the Aztecs were 3-1 ATS as underdogs this year including upset wins over Arizona St and Boise St but were just 0-8 ATS as a favorite. Last we checked, they weren t favored here. Thursday, December 20th Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa, FL 1H UNDER Marshall 28 SOUTH FLORIDA 26. Note this is being played at Raymond James Stadium. However, we re only giving USF 2.5 points of home field advantage. Marshall will travel well here as many of their players are from the state of Florida. Also it can be a negative to play at home for the holidays (nothing special feeling or reward for a good season). USF s OC left for McNeese St and the Bulls will go with their special teams and TE s coach Justin Burke to call plays here, something he s never done in his career. We re are getting USF low after 5 straight losses to end the season. However, Marshall head coach Doc Holliday is a perfect 5-0 SU/ATS in bowl games with an average win by 12 ppg and an average cover by 10 ppg. We prefer the UNDER here with the USF offense having question marks. Friday, December 21st Bahamas Bowl in Nassau, Bahamas 2H Fiu (+5.5). Toledo 33 Florida International 31. FIU should be better represented here as they are only 180 miles away while Toledo 1,200 miles from the islands. We also think we have a head coaching mismatch as Toledo head coach Candle has not shown a good look in bowls (especially last year) while FIU head coach Butch Davis is 6-2 ATS in bowls. Note that since Christmas Day 2015, MAC teams are 1-10 SU/3-7-1 ATS in bowl games. Finally, we may have a hidden factor here as FIU s QB is a Bowling Green transfer in James Morgan who threw for 335 yards and 5 TD s vs the Rockets last year. Week 16 Computer Projected Lines for Every CFB Game For the past couple of seasons we have posted computer projected lines at pregame.com. Games where there was of difference of more than 3 points saw our computer lines actually beat the Vegas line at a (55%) clip the last two years. That s pretty solid and actually better than our own handicapping (much to our dismay). So far this year s plays are Keep in mind, these computer lines don t take into consideration off-the-field factors like revenge or flat spots. They are basically a power-rating number difference between the two teams that also takes into consideration the home field advantage. With only 14 games on the schedule, there s only one game this week where our computer is off more than 3 points compared to the Vegas line (highlighted), and that would be FIU +5.5 over Toledo. The Comp column is the computer projected line and the Diff column is the difference between the Vegas line and the Computer line. + numbers in the difference column say back the underdog. - numbers in the difference column say back the favorite. Let us know if you have questions. Game Line Comp Diff 201 North Texas 202 Utah St Tulane 204 UL-Lafayette Arizona St 206 Fresno St Eastern Michigan 208 Georgia Southern Middle Tennessee 210 Appalachian St Northern Illinois 212 UAB Ohio 214 San Diego St Game Line Comp Diff 215 Marshall 216 USF FIU 218 Toledo BYU 220 Western Michigan Wake Forest 222 Memphis Houston 224 Army Buffalo 226 Troy Louisiana Tech 228 Hawaii Potato Bowl in Boise, ID 1H Western Michigan (+12). Byu 31 Western Michigan 20. Usually, you have questionable motivation for double-digit favorites prior to New Year s Day bowl games. The thinking behind it is that you re clearly the superior team but a little disappointed to be playing in a smaller bowl. We believe that is the case here as the Cougars blew a huge lead to their arch rival Utah in the finale while Western Michigan upset Northern Illinois to ensure a bowl bid. Do note that BYU already played on the Blue Turf this year...losing to Boise St on November 3rd. Still we lean with the Broncos here. Saturday, December 22nd Birmingham Bowl in Birmingham, AL 1H Wake Forest (+4.5). Memphis 38 Wake Forest 35. Memphis comes in off another big blown lead vs their nemesis UCF. This time the Tigers were outscored 35-3 in the second half after getting out-scored 17-0 in the second half of the first meeting. They re taking on a Wake Forest team that should be pretty amped to be playing in their 3rd straight bowl game. The Demon Deacons crushed Duke 59-7 in the regular season to earn bowl eligibility. It was quite an accomplishment considering Wake lost 13 players to season-ending injuries. Memphis has lost a couple of assistant coaches in the past couple of weeks and we re not sure they will be over the AAC championship game. Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, TX 1H Army (+3). Army 31 Houston 27. At first, we thought we would be taking the points here with Houston as Army has been a poor favorite. However, note Houston s DC Mark D Onofrio was fired after the regular season and the Cougars will be playing without four defensive lineman in their 2-deep including All-American DT Ed Oliver. That won t be a good look vs the Army option. On the other side of the ball, Houston lost their all-everything QB D Eriq King a couple games ago and clearly they missed him in a blowout loss to Memphis where we cashed on these pages. Quite simply, we trust Army more. Totals players note that this total was hammered yesterday by sharper bettors as the total dropped more than a TD. Dollar General Bowl in Mobile, AL 3H Troy (+3). Troy 27 Buffalo 24. First and foremost we think Troy will have a huge crowd edge here playing less than 3-hours away while Buffalo is more than 1,100 miles away. We also think Buffalo might still be smarting from blowing a lead in the MAC Championship game a couple of weeks ago. Meanwhile, Troy has been as solid as they come under head coach Neal Brown with the opportunity to notch a 3rd straight double-digit win season. They ve gone ATS under him including a ATS mark this season. Troy has also won and covered each of their first two bowls under Brown while Buffalo head coach Lance Leipold is coaching in his first bowl game. Nothing wrong with fading MAC teams come bowl season as the conference is on a 1-10 SU/3-7-1 ATS run in the post-season. Hawai i Bowl in Honolulu, HI 1H OVER 60. Louisiana Tech 33 HAWAII 31. Louisiana Tech comes in struggling as they lost 3 of their last 4 games to close the regular season. Meanwhile, Hawaii was on a ATS run until they won and covered each of their last 2 games of the season highlighted by the outright upset at San Diego St as 18-point underdogs. LT head coach Skip Holtz has won 4 straight bowl games and while we lean with Louisiana Tech here, we prefer the OVER as we expect a lot of points in this one. The Bulldogs averaged 45 ppg in those last 4 bowl games. Meanwhile Hawai s defense has allowed 42 ppg in their last 6 games. Top 9 CFB ATS Trends for Week North Texas closed the season with 5 straight non-covers. The Mean Green are 8-point dogs vs Utah St. 2. UL-Lafayette finished the season going 5-1 ATS in the underdog role. The Ragin Cajuns are 3.5-point dogs vs Tulane. 3. Fresno St is on a ATS run. The Bulldogs are 4-point favorites vs Arizona St. 4. Eastern Michigan is on a ATS as an underdog. The Eagles are 1.5-point dogs vs Ga Southern. 5. Appalachian St is on a ATS run. The Mountaineers are 7-point favorites vs Middle Tennessee. 6. Northern Illinois head coach Rod Carey is just 0-5 SU/ATS in bowl games. The Huskies have gotten outscored by 25 ppg in those bowl games and failed to cover the spread by 18 ppg. 7. The underdog went 11-1 ATS in San Diego St games this year. The Aztecs are 3-point dogs to Ohio. 8. Marshall head coach Doc Holliday is a perfect 5-0 SU/ATS in bowl games with an average win by 12 ppg and an average cover by 10 ppg. 9. The MAC is on a 1-10 SU/3-7-1 ATS run in bowl games.

5 4H = BEST 3H = BETTER 2H = GOOD 1H = FAIR THE POWERS PACK 3H INDIANAPOLIS -3 (EV) over Dallas 2H MINNESOTA -7 over Miami 2H Tennessee +2.5 (EV) over N.Y. GIANTS Games in Rotation Order HOME TEAM IN CAPS Thursday, December 13th KANSAS CITY 30 L.A. Chargers 24. Obviously, a huge game with a lot of implications in the AFC West. The Chargers have won 10 games for the first time since 2009 and actually have won 9 of their last 10. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have won 20 of their last 21 division games and have won 9 straight over the Chargers (7-2 ATS). KC s defense has been much better at home (allowing 19 ppg) compared to the road (34 ppg). We like the Chiefs Saturday, December 15th Houston 24 N.Y. JETS 17. Houston s 9-game win streak came to an end last week as we cashed our top play on these pages fading them. Meanwhile, the Jets broke their 6-game losing streak in upsetting the Bills. However, the Jets were fortunate to win scoring the game-winning TD with 1:17 left and they were out-gained We trust Texans to bounce back here. DENVER 23 Cleveland 20. Clearly the Browns and specifically their offense and QB Mayfield have been much better since the departure of HC Jackson and OC Haley. Last week they surprised us on these pages in their win over Carolina. Baker has now thrown a TD pass in his first 10 NFL games (last QB to do that was Kurt Warner). Meanwhile, the Broncos fell behind the lowly 49ers Clearly they missed DB Chris Harris as the 49ers TE Kittle had 210 receiving yards. However, Denver has been a thorn in Cleveland s side for 30 years including a current 11-0 SU/9-2 ATS mark vs the Browns. Pass. Sunday, December 16th 2H MINNESOTA 27 Miami 17. Two teams off disparate results as the Vikings lost by 2 TD s on MNF (although it was a 50/50 game in the middle of the 4Q). Meanwhile, the Dolphins got the dramatic final play win over the Patriots. Miami is getting out-gained by 91 ypg on the season and are 7-1 SU in games decided by 8 points or less. Five of their 6 losses are by double-digits and the Dolphins are just 1-10 SU in their last 11 road games. Minnesota desperately needs a win to remain in the playoff mix and they are back home where they are SU/ ATS (73%) under head coach Mike Zimmer. We like the Vikings to get well here. CINCINNATI 24 Oakland 21. The Bengals have lost 5 straight games allowing 32 ppg in the process and have also failed to cover 5 straight home games. Cincy did get a cover vs a Chargers team last week that was most likely looking ahead to KC this week. Meanwhile, the Raiders are off a big upset win over Pittsburgh last week. QB Carr has a 8-0 TD-to-INT ratio in his last 4 games. However, Oakland is 1-5 SU/0-6 ATS in their last 6 games in the Eastern Time Zone. They re also dealing with the distractions that their own city is suing them. BALTIMORE 27 Tampa Bay 20. Tampa Bay is off a misleading 14-point loss to New Orleans last week as the Bucs actually led the game Meanwhile, the Ravens were extremely close to pulling off a big upset over the Chiefs but BAL was done in by KC QB Mahomes and his ridiculous talent including a miracle 4th&9 conversion and a No-Look pass. This number seems a bit high but consider that the Tampa Bay defense is allowing a ridiculous 40 ppg on the road this season (just 21 ppg at home). Updated NFL Records: Straight Up, ATS and Over/Under Straight-Up Against The Spread Over/Under Team Total Home Away Total Home Away Total Home Away Arizona Atlanta Baltimore Buffalo Carolina Chicago Cincinnati Cleveland Dallas Denver Detroit Green Bay Houston Indianapolis Jacksonville Kansas City L.A. We think the Cowboys are now getting a little too much respect in the market place off 5 straight wins and covers. This game isn t all that important to them after the big OT win over Philly last week as they have a pair of NFC bouts on deck. Meanwhile, every game is important to the Colts who last week cashed as our top play on these pages in their outright upset at Houston. Keep in mind, new head coach Frank Reich was coaching in the NFC East last year and is quite familiar with those teams (already 2-0 ATS this year). BUFFALO 21 Detroit 17. Buffalo had a 120-yard edge over the Jets last week but found a way to lose (0-2 the last 2 weeks despite +360 yards). However, rookie QB Josh Allen became the first QB in the Super Bowl era to have backto-back 100-yard rushing outputs. Meanwhile, the Lions got a Pick-6 to seal the win in Arizona last week but this offense is really struggling failing to top 22 points in any of their last 7 games. We don t expect much to change here vs a Buffalo defense that ranks No. 1 in the NFL in total defense. CHICAGO 25 Green Bay 20. The Bears will have revenge here for blowing the big 17-point second-half lead to Green Bay in Week 1. Last week they got a huge win over the Rams on SNF despite only 100 yards passing from Trubisky. Last week we cashed on these pages with Green Bay as QB Rodgers set the NFL record with 368 passes without an interception. GB did get out-gained so we re not completely overwhelmed by the effort under interim coach Philbin. Green Bay is on a 8-0 SU/7-1 ATS run vs the Bears at Solider Field but the Packers are 0-8 SU/1-6-1 ATS on the road dating back to last year. 2H Tennessee 22 N.Y. GIANTS 21. Obviously, Tennessee really needs this game if they are to remain in the playoff hunt while the Giants have been eliminated. The G-Men have won 4 of their last 5 after last week s blowout win over the Redskins (led 40-0!). Still they have been out-gained in 4 of their last 6 and have played back-up QB s the last two weeks. Meanwhile, the Titans have extra rest after blowing out the Jags last Thursday thanks to RB Henry and his 238 rushing yards and 4 TD s. Titans outright! JACKSONVILLE 21 Washington 16. This is the lowest total in the NFL since No matter how bad the Redskins looked last week and they were trailing 40-0 at one point vs the Giants, we simply can t lay a full TD with a Jacksonville team that is 1-78 SU/1-6-2 ATS in their last 9 games (-77.5 ATS points). Do note that the Redskins are going to Josh Johnson at QB after the Sanchez experiment lasted only 1.5 weeks. We actually lean with WAS here. ATLANTA 24 Arizona 17. Both teams lost last week despite having the yardage edges. Neither team has much to play for and the Falcons are just 2-9 ATS in their last 11. We find it amazing that the markets continue to bet on Atlanta as last week we cashed against them in their trip to Lambeau despite the fact the line moved 1.5-points against us (we gave out GB -5.5, they were mainly -4). We lean with the ugly dog provided rookie QB Rosen doesn t throw any more Pick 6 s. That s a big if. Seattle 23 SAN FRANCISCO 20. Last week both teams got big wins. The Seahawks are traveling on a short week after their MNF win over the Vikings. Meanwhile, the 49ers got their pass game going last week as TE Kittle had 210 receiving yards. Despite Seattle winning 10 straight games in the series (12-2 ATS run). We lean with the 49ers here who despite a loss to Seattle a couple weeks ago, actually had the yardage in that one by 127 yards. Also note Seattle has been out-gained in 5 of their last 6. New England 27 PITTSBURGH 24. The Patriots have won and covered 5 straight over the Steelers. Both teams come in off big upset losses last week in the final seconds. The Steelers missed a game-tying FG vs Oakland when their kicker slipped while the Pats allowed a shocking lateral play vs Miami. Probably the most remarkable ATS trend we ve seen all year is quite simple: The Patriots off a straight up loss and are either an underdog or are laying less than a FG in the next game are 20-0 ATS since 2002! L.A. RAMS 31 Philadelphia 21. The Rams come in off the SNF loss to the Bears last week. Clearly, QB Goff look impacted by the cold but good news for Rams fans is that L.A. will not likely play another cold weather game this season. Meanwhile, it s been a chilly season for the defending Super Bowl champs who last week pretty much saw their season come to an end in OT at Dallas. Philly s defense was gashed allowing nearly 600 yards (most since 1966). With Carson Wentz now likely out of this game, we re sitting on the sidelines here. If you re looking to back the Rams do note they are ATS in their last 10 games. Monday, December 17th NEW ORLEANS 28 Carolina 24. You re certainly now paying a premium with the Saints who are on a 10-1 SU/ATS run. However, note that they trailed Tampa Bay 14-3 last week and were extremely lucky to get a cover. Their high powered offense has manged just 262 ypg in their last 3 games. Meanwhile, Carolina has somehow found a way to lose 4 straight games despite having the yardage edge in all 4 by 83 ypg (actually have lost and failed to cover in 5 straight games). It doesn t look like they have thrown in the towel yet but it s now or never in this one. Slight lean on the home team. Just missed the cut: Kansas City -3.5 over L.A. Chargers and New England -1.5 over Pittsburgh.
