2 Welcome Week 2015 Welcome Week is an opportunity for new students to learn about campus resources and student life, as well as setting the expectation that they can Commit to Complete. For returning students, it is an opportunity to re-connect and reestablish themselves on the road to completion. This year s theme is Moving forward Making a difference Together. Welcome Week will grant all students the opportunity to establish an academic and community connection to Harold Washington College. 3 TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 WELCOME TO YOUR HWC COMMUNITY Event (Room 102) 12:15 pm-1:30 pm The Dean of Student Services and the Director of Security will have a social event that will allow students to mingle with their security staff and get information about the campus. They will also be given information about the Office of Student Services. This will allow students to establish a rapport with security in an effort to make students feel safe and connected to the campus. VOTER S REGISTRATION DRIVE (2 nd Floor Atrium) 11 am-2 pm Representatives from The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute will be on campus registering all students to vote. VETERAN SERVICES MEET & GREET (Room 102) 3:30 pm- 5 pm This will be an information session for our veteran population. They will get to meet the Director of Veteran Affairs, get information about financial aid, and other resources available to veterans on campus. They will also be able to mingle and meet other veterans who are already students on campus. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 CONVOCATION CEREMONY (Room 103)/INFORMATION FAIR (Room 102), 9:30 am-11 am There will be a presentation to all new students detailing campus resources and academic expectations. Student will also be presented with a freshmen pledge in a graduation ceremonytype event. The Campus President, as well as Student Services Staff (Deans and Associate Deans), will welcome new students and discuss expectations for college success. Once the convocation is concluded, students will be directed to information tables from various departments in Room 102. Students can get information from Career Services, Security, College to Careers, Phi Theta Kappa, The Wellness Center, and the Student Government Association. Campus tours will also be available. Families and friends are encouraged to attend. WELCOME TO HAROLD WASHINGTON (Room 102/ Wabash Ave.) 12 pm-4 pm Welcome to Harold Washington is an internal and external community building event located inside of Harold Washington and outside along the sidewalk between HWC and Wabash. Students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members from nearby organizations will be invited to meet one another and learn about HWC while listening to live music, viewing student theatre/writing performances, enjoying service from food trucks, and participating in various events inside and outside of the campus. ADVISER MEET & GREET (Room 102)

4 2 pm-4 pm The HWC Advising team will have this session to introduce themselves to students and to give information about the advising office. They will also discuss GPS and developing a path to graduation through educational planning. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 PART-TIME JOB FAIR (Room 103) 10 am-2 pm Employers will be on campus to hire students for part-time positions. Downtown employers have been targeted for this event. Companies such as Mariano s, UPS, and TCF Bank have confirmed attendance. Prior to the job fair, please visit our Career Planning and Placement Center (located in room 1140) to get your resume and cover letter evaluated. Students are highly encouraged to bring resumes and cover letters, and remember to wear professional attire. TUTOR MEET & GREET (Room 409) 12 pm-2 pm Students will have the opportunity to meet the HWC tutoring team and discuss what to expect in a tutoring session. Students will be able to sign up for tutoring appointments for the entire semester in select subject areas during this meet and greet session, and learn about drop in tutoring services for all subject areas. SGA GENERAL BODY TOWN HALL MEETING (Room 203 D/E) 2 pm-3 pm Students will be able to ask questions and discuss issues concerning the state of HWC from the student perspective. (Attendees: President, VP of Academic and Student Affairs, Department Chairs, and Deans). SGA will also run their general body meeting during this time. SGA CLUB RECEPTION (Room 203 D/E) 3:30 pm-5:00 pm SGA will formally introduce the clubs to the campus community and administrators. There will be certificates given and a formal ceremony to welcome clubs back for the school year. Clubs will also have information tables to recruit students in a reception-like environment. FRIENDS AND FAMILY APPRECIATION NIGHT (Room 1115) 5pm -7pm This will be an opportunity for students family members and friends to be introduced to Harold Washington College. There will be presentations from various departments, and an opportunity for families to ask questions and mingle with administrators, faculty and staff. There will be food provided for this event, break-out sessions, and campus tours. The HWC Jazz Ensemble will be preforming during the evening. Family members and friends will be given the opportunity to go on campus tours and speak directly with faculty and other administrators following the closing remarks and panel discussion. 5 REMEBERING 9/11 (Room 102) 11 am-12 pm This will be a time of reflection on the events of 9/11 and what it means to America today. There will be a documentary shown on remembering 9/11, and a moment of silence. WELLNESS CENTER: TIME AND STRESS MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP (Room 1041) 12pm-1pm This workshop is designed to offer tips and strategies for students who want to learn how to maximize their time while juggling multiple responsibilities (classes, work, family life, etc.). These evidence-based strategies are aimed to enhance student success. This is also an opportunity for students to learn more about Wellness Center services. TRANSFER CENTER GROUP ADVISING WORKSHOP (Room 404) 3 pm-4:30 pm The workshops are designed to teach students websites that will help them successfully transfer from their original dream school (HWC) to their new dream school after graduation from the City Colleges of Chicago. It s never too early to start thinking about transfer, because it you know where you are going, it s easier to get there! Also, by attending the workshop, students will make sure that they are taking the right classes for the transfer destination.
