The College Store Magazine s 7 th Annual Store Design Showcase BONUS Here are even more renovated or brand-new college stores to inspire your own makeover efforts, big or small. July August 2012 NACS The College Store Magazine 1
Barnes & Noble at Texas A&M University College Station (renovation) School type: four-year public Store type: contract managed by Barnes & Noble College Full-time enrollment: 49,961 Part-time enrollment: n/a Project completed: April 2012 Total store square footage: 41,538 Sales floor square footage: 31,994 Renovated area square footage: 41,538 New, added square footage: 6,745 Total project cost: approximately $3 million Architect: Perkins+Will General contractors: Vaughn Construction, College Station, TX, and National Interiors, St. Petersburg, FL Interior designer: McGinty Inc., Boulder, CO Fixturing supplier: Woodin & Co., Portland, ME As part of the renovation of the university s Memorial Student Center, the Texas A&M campus store relocated to temporary quarters during the more than three years of planning and construction leading up to its April 21 reopening this year. The store s new design was aimed at recognizing past and current achievements, as well as the overall spirit of the school, through vast displays of Aggie lifestyle imagery. The new Aggie Gift, Spirit Shop, and Trend areas feature new product lines and colorful displays that welcome guests from all entrances. The two-level, 41,500-sq.-ft. store also includes a fullservice café serving Starbucks-brand beverages; an Aggie Stop marketplace offering a large assortment of hot, fresh, and snack food items; and a lounge area that seats 96 to promote social gatherings on every level. 2 The College Store Magazine NACS July August 2012

University Bookstore South Dakota State University, Brookings (new construction) School type: four-year public Store type: institutionally owned Full-time enrollment: 12,725 Part-time enrollment: n/a Project completed: August 2011 Total store square footage: 16,060 Sales floor square footage: 11,100 Renovated area square footage: 6,409 Total project cost: $700,000 Architect: designarc Architecture + Design, Brookings, SD General contractor: Clark Drew Construction, Brookings, SD Interior designer: College Store Design, a division of Nebraska Book Co. Fixturing suppliers: OPTO International Inc., Wood Dale, IL, and Custom Millwork Students returning for the fall semester at South Dakota State University found that their SDSU Bookstore had undergone a massive renovation specially designed to drive frequency, create connections with the campus community, and greatly improve the services offered by the store. One of the most exciting new services is the HoboTech technology shop. This Apple-inspired and -certified tech space carries all the latest in hardware, software, and accessories. In addition, a techspert is on hand to assist customers with their technology questions. Design elements of the renovation include Aspen stack stone, weathered oak and American walnut plank tile, an open ceiling, and specialty accent lighting and ceiling treatments. The store s marketing department tied all of the design elements together with images from a photo shoot focused on the architectural details of iconic campus buildings. 4 The College Store Magazine NACS July August 2012

The Loch Shop Clayton State University, Morrow, GA (renovation) School type: four-year public Store type: institutionally owned Full-time enrollment: 6,872 Part-time enrollment: 3,099 Project completed: August 2011 Total store square footage: 8,175 Sales floor square footage: 5,820 Renovated area square footage: 4,470 New, added square footage: 1,350 Total project cost: n/a Architect: AmieJames Inc. General contractor: Hogan Construction Group, Norcross, GA Interior designer: College Store Design, a division of Nebraska Book Co. Fixturing suppliers: OPTO International Inc., Wood Dale, IL, and Custom Millwork As Clayton State University has changed and grown, so has The Loch Shop, all in the name of better service for its core customers: students. Returning to the Student Center following a summer of construction in 2011, the new, improved Loch Shop was not only rebuilt, but renamed after the Clayton State mascot. The Loch Shop is now bigger and better, with a lounge area, more retail space, and a wider variety of merchandise. Our goal was to provide a larger and more welcoming retail environment in which to display a broader selection of the merchandise which students need for their academic success, and which they want to fit their collegiate lifestyle, says R. Todd Smith, CCR, director of campus store services. We want The Loch Shop to be not just the place a student has to come to buy course materials, but also the place they want to visit throughout the semester. 6 The College Store Magazine NACS July August 2012

The Raiders Store Oakland Community College Southfield Campus, Southfield, MI (renovation of new store location) School type: four-year public Store type: institutionally owned Full-time enrollment: 1,759 Part-time enrollment: 2,971 Project completed: January 2012 Total store square footage: 2,740 Sales floor square footage: 2,035 Total project cost: $392,485 Architect: TMP Architecture, Bloomfield Hills and Portage, MI General contractor: George W. Auch Co., Pontiac, MI Interior designer: R. Berlin & Associates, Northville, MI Fixturing supplier: Franklin Fixtures Inc., West Wareham, MA The OCC Southfield Campus bookstore had outgrown its existing 800-sq.-ft. space. When the school decided to expand its campus to add more classroom space, the bookstore was given an existing classroom area that nearly tripled its previous square footage. The design challenge was to create a mall-like storefront along the high-traffic corridor. Design firm R. Berlin & Associates created a unique display window, allowing visibility into the store and a feature wall to highlight merchandise. Since the store s new location is near the end of a very long corridor, a dramatic curved entry feature was extended into the corridor, along with accent flooring that continues into the store to emphasize the service area. The result is a highly visible and productive store with increased sales. ncs 8 The College Store Magazine NACS July August 2012
