[2] Battle on the Border (Edinburg, Texas) Big West teams in bold Around the Big West AGGIES BREAK OUT UC Davis downed Sacramento State in a big way last week, dropping 110 points in an runaway win over its Causeway rival. The point total is the most in the Big West this season and sets a program DI record. The 32-point margin of victory is the largest by either team in the series and the Aggies 56-point first half is a program record for most points in any half. UCD also established Big West season highs in assists (26) and field goals made (40), while tying for the most free throws made in a contest. MATADORS GET ANOTHER After defeating Fresno State earlier this season for the first time since 1975, CSUN added another historic win last week. The Matadors downed Saint Mary s on the road for their first win in the series since 1981, snapping a 10-game losing skid to the Gaels. The victory came nearly 35 years to the day of the last CSUN win over SMC. BEACH DOWNS RANKED FOE The opening game of the Play4Kay Shootout in Las Vegas pitted Long Beach State against #19 South Florida, with the 49ers pulling out a tight win over the Bulls. It marked the first win for the Beach over a ranked foe since a victory against #18 California on December 13, THREE AND D UC Irvine sophomore guard Andee Ritter has flourished as the Eaters designated three-point specialist and top perimeter defender. Ritter leads the league in threes made (31) and attempted (103), while also tying for the conference lead in steals (27) and tying for second in steals per game (2.3). EFFICIENCY MONSTER UC Davis forward Morgan Bertsch may be the apple of the eye of stat metric users. The sophomore is averaging 16.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and shooting 51.2% from the floor in only 26.9 minutes per game. Her per-40 minute averages are 24.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.1 blocks. THE HIGHLANDER D UC Riverside was known for its prolific offense a year ago but this season the Highlanders are turning heads for their defense. The club leads the league in points allowed per game (63.0), while also ranking third in turnovers forced per game (16.6) and in opponents field goal percentage (39.1). THREE IN A ROW Cal Poly junior guard Lynn Leaupepe recorded her third straight double-double last week, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds against San Francisco. That performance came on the heels of a 14-point, 13-rebound game against Grand Canyon and a 12-point, 13-rebound showing against Pepperdine. Three more players could join DeCoud as Long Beach State senior Anna Kim (883) and Cal Poly senior Hannah Gilbert (886) should reach the list by season s end. A player to keep an eye on is UC Riverside senior Réjane Verin (697) as she put up 544 points last year, her first with UCR after transferring from UNLV.

3 Player Of The Week UC Riverside senior Simone DeCoud (Riverside, Calif./ John W. North HS) provided the heroics and all-around stellar play to capture Big West Women s Basketball Player of the Week recognition. The 5-5 guard averaged 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals in a pair of Highlander road victories. Playing all 40 minutes in a win at CSU Bakersfield, DeCoud collected 12 points, six rebounds, a teamhigh seven assists and a season-high four steals in a complete effort. DeCoud then led the Highlanders to their second road victory of the week, a decision over Loyola Marymount, as she buried a three-pointer with just 0.5 seconds to play. She finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocked shots to stuff the stat line. DeCoud also made 7-of-15 shots, including the decisive trey after starting the game 0-for-4 from distance. For the week, DeCoud shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the field while making all five of her free throw attempts.
