Through continuous fund-raising efforts, the Wolfpack Club is able to provide 100% of the student-athlete scholarships and to continue to build and improve athletic facilities at NC State. Over 15,000 WolfpackClub members make this type of support possible. The organization also coordinates many special events and functions for Wolfpackers all over the state, as well as certain regions of the country. Ticket priority and special mailings are two popular benefits of becoming a donor. However, the most important benefit is knowing that the contribution is providing a young man or woman the opportunity to attend NC State University. 6 2006 Outlook 2006 Outlook 4 THE 2006 WOLFPACK When you ask anybody that is involved with the NC State gymnastics team how they feel about the upcoming season, almost everybody comes up with the same word: EXCITED. The 2006 Wolfpack is the type of team that fans will want to come out and see. The experienced veterans are led by one of the top all-arounders in the EAGL in senior Kylah Bachman, and a strong core of juniors and sophomores have already competed in many meets and produced outstanding results. A talented group of freshmen join NC State this season, and it is easy to see why everybody is beaming with excitement thinking about the abilities of this years squad. I think one of the most positive things over the last couple of years, is that this team has come back in very good shape, and have not lost many skills and already are learning new stuff very early in practice, said head coach Mark Stevenson. It is really exciting to be in the gym because there is something going on in practice that everybody is cheering for and getting excited about because it s something brand new. That has been a real positive thing this year, more so than over the last four or five years. Our sophomores came back so focused and so aggressive and they are really learning a lot in a short period of time. I truly think we have the potential to be good on all four events. Stevenson enters his 26th season at the helm of the Pack, and already he is seeing the improvement the Wolfpack has made in early season practices. The thing I like the best about this group is how focused everybody is and how hard each gymnast is working so early in preparing for the season, said Stevenson. They are not afraid to tell each other that the effort needs to be picked up at times, because this group has the mentality that it is not about everybody not about individuals. They are very excited about learning and listening to each other and the coaches. This season, the Wolfpack added a new assistant coach in Karen Pleasants. Pleasants returns to her alma mater, as she was a member of the NC State gymnastics team under Mark Stevenson from She was named team MVP in 1988 and 1989, and was a NCAA Regional qualifier from Pleasants, along with fellow assistant Todd Henry, have already had a tremendous impact for NC State. Having Karen in the gym has been such a huge plus for us because she is so good at the choreography and dance and the look of the routines on beam and floor, said Stevenson. She is a also a Level 10 judge, so she is able to tell the girls what the judges look for and where certain deductions come. THE SENIORS NC State will be led this season by Kylah Bachman (York, Pa.). Bachman will be competing in the all-around for the third straight year, and has only gotten better while at NC State. Last season, she was named to the EAGL first-team for both vault and bars, and was a second-team selection in the all-around. Bachman led last years team with nine event titles, as she won one in every event including the allaround. Kylah s skills over the last three years have jumped tremendously, and I think she will compete with all the top all-arounders in the EAGL all season long to see which is the top performer in our conference, said Stevenson. I think she has as as good of a chance as any gymnast we have had here at advancing to Nationals if the team does not go. She has the leadership ability to help all the younger kids we have and help push them to get even better. The other senior on this years squad is Beth Faulkner (Charlotte, N.C.). Faulkner has experience competing on both vault and floor for the Pack during her career. Beth is a walk-on who has competed a couple of times for us over the last few years, and has done a really nice job for us when we needed her to step in when we ve had people out, said Stevenson. Beth stepped right in whenever we asked, and its always good to have people like that on our squad.

7 THE JUNIORS One of the most experienced members of the junior class is Amanda Jones (Jacksonville, Fla.). Last season, Jones saw action on all four events, including the all-around in four meets. She was named an All- EAGL first-team selection on bars. Amanda has been a at least a three-event person, and sometimes an all-arounder for us since her freshman season, said Stevenson. She will be back in that situation, as we count on her for floor, beam and bars. She ended last season in the vault lineup, and I don t see that changing this year as she should be in the all-around once again. She has a great attitude, and she is fun to coach. One of the Pack s top vaulters since her freshman season, Rachel Katz (Bloomington, Ind.) was slowed late last season with an ankle injury. She was named to the All-EAGL first-team for vault for the second straight season, and was also honored on the second-team for floor. Rachel was out for a long time due to that ankle injury, and she was a little tentative in the fall because of that, said Stevenson. Overall we all know she will be fine once the middle of the season comes around, and I ll expect her to keep doing vault, bars and floor. She is one of our top scorers on vault, so all of us are excited to get her back to full strength. After missing her freshman season with a wrist injury, Crisann Calvo (Bethlehem, Pa.) worked her way back last season, and saw action on both bars and floor. Crisann did some exhibitions for us last year, but she also competed a couple times, said Stevenson. I think that will change this year, as I see her as a starter on bars for us, as she has really come along especially hitting her hand stands. She has worked hard all summer and during the fall, and her routine looks really good. She also has the potential to do some vault and floor, so we are excited about her this season. Two other juniors have seen action for NC State in the past. Katie Ozburn (Marshall, Va.) has competed on vault, and Arien Steinback (Beaufort, N.C.) as seen action on beam. Katie has done some vaulting for us, and has been close to getting in the lineup on beam, said Stevenson. I think she will be one of the kids that carries our beam team this year, she is really coming along and doing a great job and we believe she also has an outstanding chance to be in the vault lineup as well. Over the next two years, we see her doing a lot of good things to improve our team. Arien competed on beam in one of our home meets last year, and we need her to step up to the plate and be good for us on beam this year. She came off ankle surgery in May, and it seems to be coming along well, now its just a question of if we can get enough reps in for her to get that experience. It will not be for a lack of her trying, and she is always working so hard to improve. The Pack s remaining juniors are Brooke Outland (Bonlee, N.C.) and Suzane Price (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Brooke is one of the top juniors academically throughout the entire university, not just among the student-athletes, but every junior here, said Stevenson. Her bar routine keeps improving since she has started here, a lot just depends how things play out to see if she can crack that lineup. Suzanne has had some ankle problems, but she has fought back and continues to go out and work hard. There is a good chance that sometime this season she will be vaulting for us, as she listens and does everything she can to make herself successful. THE SOPHOMORES Stevenson believes that this years sophomore class will be some of his top gymnasts this season. A year ago as freshmen, three of the classmates won EAGL Rookie of the Week honors a combined six times, including taking home EAGL Rookie of the Year honors. Leigha Hancock (Suffield, Conn.) was named EAGL Rookie of the Year last season, only the second NC State gymnast to be honored as such. As a freshman, Hancock competed on the vault, beam and floor in every meet, as was named to the All-EAGL second-team for beam. I think Leigha for sure will compete three events this year, and her bars are getting a lot better, said Stevenson. She keeps coming with a great attitude and she is working so hard. She is upgrading all of her 2006 Outlook 5

8 2006 Outlook routines, and doing what we expect out of her. She should be one of our best kids again this year. Kelsey Lee (Owings Mills, Md.) came on strong at the end of last season, competing on bars in every meet but two and seeing action on floor in nine meets. Lee won one title in both events, and had the Pack s top finish on floor at the EAGL Championships with a for ninth place. Kelsey has come back with a tremendous attitude this year, said Stevenson. She has a learned a 10.0 vault since she got her, and we are having more success with her vault as she continues to practice. Beam is coming along as she is stepping that up, and bars and floor are going to be good once again. She is learning a lot and working hard. Heather Zolton (New Port Richey, Fla.) saw action on all four events, including competing in the all-around in five of the final seven meets last season. Zolton was named EAGL Rookie of the Week a total of three times, and was a All-EAGL second-team selection on bars. Heather has come in same as Leigha and Kelsey, just so focused and working so hard to improve themselves this season, said Stevenson. Heather should do the all-around for us this year, as everything is looking good. I see her as being one of our better all-arounders this season. The fourth member of this talented sophomore class is Laurie Singer (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Last season Singer competed on vault in eight meets, before missing the two post season meets with a torn ACL. Laurie actually had surgery on both knees, and she is only a few months out of surgery and has been cleared to get back in the gym, said Stevenson. Her strength is up, and her conditioning is really good. I could see her both on bars and beam, and as her knee gets better maybe back on vault. THE FRESHMEN Stevenson and his staff once again brought in a talented freshmen class. The Wolfpack fans can expect to see these freshmen in the Pack s early season lineup. Dru Davis (Pennsville, N.J.) is one of those freshman expected to see early action, as is Luci Vance (Newfields, N.H.). Dru went to Level 10 Nationals three times, and competed on the Region 7 National Team this last year, which is one of the strongest every year, said Stevenson. Dru is a really talented athlete that will make a big impact on us. I expect her to compete all four events. Luci is a Level 10 National qualifier, and one of the top kids in her region back home. She should make and impact for us on beam and floor for sure, and has a chance to compete on vault and bars in the future. Stevenson also pegged two other freshmen, Elyse Adams (Westlake, Ohio) and Mackenzie Payne (Roanoke, Va.), as a duo who could crack the Pack s lineup as early as the first meet of the season. Elyse was coming off surgery on her foot the year before, so she was slowed a little bit in high school, said Stevenson. But I can already tell you she will make our bar lineup. She already learned a double-layout on bars that she didn t have when she came in, and a major release. We brought Mackenzie in for her floor and vaulting, and I do believe she will start floor for us this year and I see her as a good vaulter a little down the road. Rounding out the group of newcomers are Ashley Shepard (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Lauren Spence (Wexford, Pa.). Ashley has the potential to see some vault down the line, but I she her as a starter on floor for us, said Stevenson. She is a beautiful dancer and has some really nice skills. Right now Lauren is a great kid working hard in floor, beam and vault. THE SCHEDULE The Wolfpack will have one of the toughest home schedules in recent memory. NC State will host a total of six home meets, including returning to the RBC Center for a meet on February 19 versus Florida and William & Mary. We competed once before at the RBC Center and it was beautiful and we had a great time, said Stevenson. It is more work in setting it up and such, but it is worth it cause we get the video highlights of routines and just get to go out and compete somewhere else. Everybody at NC State does such a great job in preparing for our regular meets in Reynolds, and I m sure everybody will be just as excited to pull off a great meet at the RBC Center. In addition to the Pack s meet at the RBC Center, NC State will host five meets in the newly renovated Reynolds Coliseum. The home schedule starts with Rutgers coming to Raleigh on January 14. Other meets are: the Hearts Invitational on February 10, Denver, George Washington and North Carolina on February 24, Michigan State on March 3, and the final home meet is March 17 against George Washington, Maryland and New Hampshire. This years EAGL Championships will be held at Rutgers. Then the Pack hopes to advance to the NCAA Regionals at Georgia and the NCAA Championships at Eugene, Ore. 6

20 Head Coach Head Coach Mark Stevenson Mark Stevenson has taken the NC State women s gymnastics program and built it from the ground up. Stevenson has been the only head coach NC State has had, and now enters his 26th season. Through hard-work of his own and each of his teams, Stevenson has made the Wolfpack into one of the top programs in the country while competing in one of the most competitive regions in the nation. His teams have earned trips to the postseason 22 times and have been ranked among the top 25 for much of the past 15-plus years. The Wolfpack won back-to-back EAGL conference titles in 1999 and 2000, and were well represented in each of the 10 EAGL meets, coming away with a top-three finish in seven of them, tying for the top mark in the conference. Following the Pack s second straight EAGL title in 2000, Stevenson was named the NCAA Southeast Regional Coach of the Year. For Stevenson, it marked the third time he has won the award (1993 and 1994), and also has the 1998 EAGL Coach of the Year award to his credit. Under Stevenson s leadership, the Wolfpack has averaged over 21 wins a year the last 14 years and captured two EAGL championships and four individual event championships, including Kelli Brown s win on bars at 2002 EAGL Championships. Furthermore, Stevenson has had 28 gymnasts earn 90 spots on All-EAGL teams since NC State helped start the league in He has also COACHING EXPERIENCE Massachusetts Assistant Coach, NC State University Men s Assistant Coach, Head Coach, 1981-present THE STEVESON FILE Totals HONORS AND AWARDS NCAA Regional Coach of the Year, 2000 EAGL Coach of the Year, 1998 NCAA Regional Coach of the Year, 1994 NCAA Regional Coach of the Year, 1993 EDUCATION B.A. Iowa, 1978 recreation resource administration M.A. NC State, 1984 recreation resource administration ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE Iowa: team captain, second in Big Ten in vaulting, qualified for NCAA nationals Mankato State: competed in diving gymnastics team finished season conference champions 18

21 coached Christi Newton, who was the league s Gymnast of the Year in A Wolfpack gymnast has also been named EAGL Rookie of the Year twice, Kara Charles in 1998 and Leigh Hancock just last year. Like many of his gymnasts, Stevenson, who has 356 wins to his credit, has been recognized for his work. He has been named the Southeast Region Coach of the Year on three occasions, in 1993, 1994, and 2000, and was named EAGL Coach of the Year in So much of the credit belongs to the kids, Stevenson explains. It s hard to describe how proud I am of them. In the past, our gymnasts have been kids who weren t heavily recruited, but they have worked hard to get where they can compete with the best programs out there. I am especially proud of the kids for often being the underdog, but still getting the job done. We haven t won every meet, but we have beaten a lot of teams that we should not have been able to compete with. I can t tell you how good it makes me feel to have the kids come in at one level and then leave at a much higher one. NC State s success in meets has carried over to the classroom as well. Since 1984, 70 gymnasts have been named to the ACC s academic honor roll 135 times, while 55 have also earned spots on the EAGL all-academic team. In 2004, NC State added a new award to its trophy case, as Marlyn Madey was named the EAGL Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Wolfpack earned its highest academic honor to date following the 2000 season, when they ranked 16th in overall GPA for the academic year in the scholastic All-American team rankings released by the National Coaches Association. NC State was also named a 2002 NACGC/W Academic All-American team with 10 different gymnasts earning academic All-American honors. With the increase in scholarships, we ve been able to recruit better students, Stevenson says. I promised myself several years ago that if I had a choice between a fair gymnast with good grades and a good gymnast with fair grades, I would take the fair gymnast and help them become a better one. Attendance at meets has grown with the success of the his program. Last year, NC State once again was one of the most watched teams in the nation, notching yet another top-25 finish for attendance, with over 1,300 fans per home meet.. In 1998, NC State set an EAGL single-meet attendance record with 6,196 fans for its meet against Georgia. To continue to help increase Wolfpack attendance, Stevenson has spearheaded efforts to sell season tickets and find corporate sponsors for meets. The success of the NC State gymnastics program can be attributed to his coaching philosophy, which involves recruiting lower-level gymnasts and walk-ons and helping them raise their skills to a higher level. Stevenson has first-hand experience with this approach. He began his competitive career at Iowa as a walk-on and went on to become a national championships qualifier. I went through the hard process of being a walk-on when I was in college, Stevenson says. So I have a spot inside for kids who aren t satisfied with their skills and who want to work hard to become better athletes. A lot of schools don t take that approach because you have to teach them and help them develop their skills, but teaching them is what makes it fun. We recruit the best gymnasts we can find. We look at their academics, how much gymnastics have they already done and how long they have competed at a particular level. The longer you work at one level, the more tired and beat up you get, so that kid won t make it through four years of college or if they do, their skills will be the same. We d rather see them grow as gymnasts and help them raise their skill level. Stevenson coaches gymnastics outside of the NC State program as well. Until it was sold a few years ago, he ran the Triangle Twisters, a gym school in Durham, N.C. He also runs state meets at various levels, often on weekends that the NC State team competes at home. During summers, he coaches at Woodward Gymnastics Camp in Woodward, Pa., where he is a director. He is also an officer of the EAGL, serving as the league s secretary and is responsible for awards at the league championships. Prior to coming to NC State in 1980 as an assistant coach for the men s gymnastics team, Stevenson served as an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts for one season. The Minutemen compiled an 11-3 record and produced one All-American during his tenure. Stevenson graduated from Iowa in 1978 with a B.S. degree in recreational education. At Iowa, he served as a team captain during his senior season. At the Big Ten Conference Championships in 1978, he placed second in the vault and qualified for the NCAA Championships, where he scored a In 1984, Stevenson earned his master s degree in recreational resources administration from NC State. PACK EXPERIENCES RARE TIE Something so rare in collegiate gymnastics happened in the Pack s March 25 home meet against North Carolina, that it has never happened in the 25 year history of the NC State gymnastics program. The Pack and the Kylah Bachman lead the way for NC State last season, winning nine overall event titles MEET RESULTS OVERALL HOME 2-4 AWAY 4-0 NEUTRAL January 9 Rutgers , W #14 Denver , L Boise State , W UC Davis , W 29 William & Mary , W James Madison February 5 Governor s Cup (@ North Carolina) North Carolina , L Maryland , W Towson , W 11 Hearts Invitational Iowa , W George Wash , W William & Mary , W New Hampshire , L 25 North Carolina , T 27@ North Carolina , W March #8 Georgia , L UC-Berkley , W 18 West Virginia , W 25 EAGL Championships (@ NC State) North Carolina Maryland West Virginia NC State George Washington New Hampshire Rutgers Pittsburgh April 9 NCAA Regionals (@ Florida) No. 7 Florida No. 5 Georgia No. 17 Denver No. 25 North Carolina West Virginia NC State Tar Heels ended the meet in a tie, as both squads scored a The Pack would get its revenge two days later, scoring a seasonhigh for the win at conference rival North Carolina. She is the only member of the Pack squad to compete in the all-around in every meet last season, and finished tops on the squad with three honors on the All-EAGL teams. Bachman was All- EAGL first team on both vault and bars, and was named second team for the all-around. She was also EAGL Gymnast of the Week after the Pack s two meets against North Carolina. Bachman lead NC State with nine event titles, including three in the all-around. She won a title in every event last season, and won floor against West Virginia with a career-high 9.9. She won beam in three straight meets during the season, and won the all-around in back -to-back weeks at New Hampshire and then against North Carolina. Representing four conferences and six states, the EAGL is comprised of Maryland, North Carolina and NC State of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and West Virginia of the Big East Conference, New Hampshire of the America East Conference, and George Washington from the Atlantic-10 joined for the 2005 season replacing original member Towson. In August 1996, the NCAA Council accepted the EAGL as an official affiliated member of the NCAA. EAGL schools have brought a great history of success into the league. New Hampshire tallied four East Coast Athletic Conference titles as a member of that league. West Virginia won four Atlantic 10 Conference crowns before leaving that league to join the EAGL. All eight schools have competed in regional competition, while New Hampshire, NC State, and West Virginia have gone on to NCAA Championships competition. The EAGL has also showcased the 1997 national gymnast of the year, West Virginia s Kristin Quakenbush. And in 1982, Pittsburgh produced NCAA bars champion Lisa Shirk. North Carolina s Courtney Bumpers has highlighted the national stage, as she was the NCAA Champion on floor in both 2004 and During the 1998 season, was when NC State became the first league member to qualify for the NCAA Championships and Rutgers became the eighth and final EAGL school to qualify for the NCAA regionals. The Wolfpack went on to represent the EAGL well, finishing 11th in the nation, while the Scarlet Knights regional berth means that all eight league schools have been to postseason competition. A charter member of the EAGL, NC State has had its share of success as a league member. In its first year as an EAGL member (1996), the Wolfpack s Christi Newton was the league s top performer, earning EAGL Gymnast of the Year and Senior of the Year honors. Hosting the league championships the following year, NC State raised their standing, finishing second to West Virginia at the league championships. Then a junior, Stephanie Wall tied the Mountaineers Quakenbush for first place in the all-around. The Wolfpack continued to enjoy success in 1998, with Kara Charles earning Rookie of the Year and Mark Stevenson earning Coach of the Year honors. More important, NC State earned its Both Leigha Hancock and Heather Zolton had top-five finishes at last years EAGL Championships, hosted by the Wolfpack. first ever berth in the NCAA Championships and went on to record the second-highest score ever for a firstyear team. In 1999, the Wolfpack set a new standard for itself when it earned its first EAGL Championship, while setting an EAGL Championship record with a team score of , and finished the season ranked 13th in the nation just one spot away from competing in the NCAA Championships. NC State also ended West Virginia s three year run as conference champion, and became only the second different school to capture the EAGL Championship. The following year, 2000, was once again one of the Pack s most successful seasons in the conference. NC State won its second consecutive conference title, with senior Jenny Sommer finishing in a tie for first on beam and becoming the school s third individual champion at an EAGL Championship. After a disappointing sixth place finish in 2001, NC State once again finished in the top half of the league in 2002 by scoring a for a fourth place showing. At New Hampshire in 2003, the Wolfpack set a new school record with its road score of , and it was also the third highest score in school history. In 2004, NC State finished in the top half of the conference, as the Pack placed third with a team score of at Pittsburgh. NC State has now finished in top-three at the conference meet in seven of the league s nine years, tops in the conference. Last year the EAGL Championships were hosted by NC State, and the Pack finished fourth. NC State also had the EAGL Rookie of the Year in Leigha Hancock, and tied a school record with seven members making the All-EAGL squads. Based on the amount of success it has enjoyed in the short time it has existed, the EAGL has begun to emerge as a powerful conference. In the next couple of years it could rival many of the usual gymnasticpowerhouse conferences. 35

38 NC State Facilities NC State Facilities CARMICHAEL GYMNASIUM The NC State gymnastics team enjoys the luxury of practicing and training in Carmichael Gymnasium, which includes a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility. Constructed 14 years ago, the gymnastics facility was designed by State coaches Mark Stevenson and Sam Schuh. Wolfpack gymnasts are proud and fortunate to have such a facility. The complex seats 800 spectators and can be expanded to accommodate 1,200. Overhead rigging is in place for most of the apparatus. In addition, the area features an in-ground pit system that provides an arena for performance, practice and instruction of new routines with the highest degree of safety. Two of the pits are positioned for work on the uneven parallel bars and tumbling while a third pit is used for work on the vault and the balance beam. The gymnastics facility recently got a facelift and upgrade in May The Pack added foam pits for bars, vault and tumbling. The renovations will allow gymnasts to work on harder skills with less chance of injury REYNOLDS COLISEUM Located on the NC State campus, Reynolds Coliseum is the home for all of the Wolfpack gymnastics team s home meets. Over the years, the coliseum has become a great venue for women s gymnastics, helping the Wolfpack to an all-time home record of (.792). In 1997, NC State hosted the EAGL Championships in Reynolds, when the Pack s Stephanie Wall won the league title for the all-around. The EAGL Championshipsalso returned to Reynolds in In 2004, the Wolfpack hosted the NCAA Regional Championships, the first time any school in the state of North Carolina has done so. Opened in 1949, the 12,400-seat coliseum is a multi-level facility that contains locker rooms, a training room and a recently expanded weight room, in addition to providing an arena to compete in. The coliseum also has classrooms, offices for academic support, marketing and sports information. Several other sports at NC State use the coliseum on a regular basis, including women s basketball, wrestling and volleyball. It has also hosted civic events, concerts, commencement exercises and summer camps. PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENT Proper strength and conditioning is a key to success on the fields of play for all collegiate athletes, and at NC State each athlete is provided an opportunity to build themselves through the Wolfpack s outstanding physical improvement program. All the facilities needed by the gymnastics team are available in the recently expanded Reynolds Coliseum Weight Room Facility. Wright Wayne, the Pack s strength and conditioning advisor, is there to provide superior training and guidance to the entire squad. CASE DINING HALL Proper nutrition is essential to all Wolfpack athletes. The Case Dining Hall provides well-balanced and appetizing meals needed to maintain winning performances. NC State athletes enjoy the convenience and outstanding quality of the Case training table. The friendly Case Dining Hall staff does an outstanding job feeding over 500 athletes three meals a day. The dining hall is located on the bottom floor of the Case Athletic Center, which is convenient to all the dorms, Weisiger-Brown Facility, Reynolds Coliseum, Carmichael Gymnasium and classrooms. Each meal is designed to give the athlete a number of healthy options. There is a wide array of food selections including a buffet line, potato and pasta bar, cold sandwich buffet with a variety of breads and meats, and frozen yogurts and desserts. The meal schedule is molded around the class and practice schedules of the athletes, which allows them an extra advantage in budgeting their time. The daily menus are nutritional, varied and all-you-can-eat. For Wolfpack studentathletes, it all adds up to eating to win. 36

39 Student-Athlete Development ImPACK is a Life Skills program designed to support the total development of NC State student-athletes. The mission of ImPACK is to provide an unmatched comprehensive life skills program for student-athletes that encourages their growth in decision making, enhances their interpersonal relationships, and enables them to make meaningful contributions to their communities. The ImPACK program consists of five major components: THE ACADEMIC COMMITMENT The primary goal is to educate student-athletes so they not only obtain a degree, but also develop an appreciation for learning in addition to the knowledge and skills that will carry them through life. The following topics are primarily covered in the first-year orientation course taught by academic coordinators in the Academic Support Program fro Student-Athletes (ASPSA). THE ATHLETIC COMMITMENT NC State pledges that all student-athletes will be provided with quality facilities, equipment, coaching and support services so each student can achieve his or her maximum potential both academically and athletically. Sensitivity to the dignity of the student-athlete is vital to the success of the department EAGL ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM The NC State gymnastics team placed 12 members on the EAGL All-Academic team last season. Also, THE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITMENT The ImPACK program focuses on the individual as a whole person, and provides a system of balanced life learning that addresses the needs of the individual before and after graduation. The areas that this commitment addresses include: Social Development, Personal Health, Fundamental Values, Emotional Health, Leadership Training/Citizenship. Last year year as seniors both Cori Goldstein and Andrea Petrocelli were hononred on the EAGL All-Academic Team. Goldstein was honored for the fourth straight year as well. THE SERVICE COMMITMENT The ImPACK program supports the philosophy that student-athletes gain leadership through service. Through their efforts, they make a positive contribution in an extensive community outreach program as well as develop a commitment to lifelong service. Studentathletes area participanting in the following programs: School programs, community outreach, and P.A.C.K. visits are made to children at local hospitals. During the school year, Wolfpack student-athletes and staff reached thousands of people in the triangle area through ImPACK s outreach efforts, including working with community programs such as Read-a-Thons, Habitat for Humanity, non-profit organization fundraisers, mentoring and other outreach programs.
