2 December 17-18, 2016 Dear friends, Our Challenge Generations before the birth of Jesus there was an amazing, widespread expectation that such a one would come, born of a virgin, called Emmanuel, God with us. The prophet Isaiah saw this event as having a universal significance that would change human history forever. The Apostle Paul understood that Christmas is about gifts and giving. There would be no Christmas if God had not given the apostles authority to carry the good news of Jesus Christ to people of every race, class, nationality, and religion. Joseph is crucial to the Christmas story. First, he showed compassion for Mary even before the angel spoke to him about all that was about to happen. Then he had faith in the divine message and brought Mary into his home and welcomed the birth of her child, Jesus. Those who work to improve and reform our society often lead lonely lives. They are mocked as do-gooders and maligned as trouble makers. The God we know in Jesus Christ is a king of a totally different kind. For one thing, this God comes to us, instead of waiting for us to go to him. God has come to us uniquely in Jesus Christ so that we may know him in human terms. In the fullness of time the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Incarnation gave the world a clearer understanding of God s nature. And, ultimately, God in Christ rules the world from a cross of suffering love. The psalmist of old was wise in understanding that God never leaves us alone, no matter how alone we may feel at any given time. He wrote: If I ascend into the heavens, you are there! If I make my bed in hell, you are there! God is always there in our lives, on the brightest day and in the darkest night. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Thank you, St. Aloysius Parishioners, for your generous support for senior religious! A sister writes, Because of your kindness, our elderly sisters will have the comfort, security, and joy of living out their remaining years here in their home. You truly honor them and their many years of service by your generosity. Religious across the United States offer sincere thanks for your generosity to last week s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, and I join them! Sr. Janelle Sevier Preparing the Church for Christmas The Art and Environment Committee invites you to join us on Saturday, December 17 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and Thursday, December 22 at 5:00 p.m. as we prepare the Church for Christmas. The use of the Christmas tree is relatively modern. Its origins are found in the medieval mystery plays that depicted the tree of paradise and the Christmas light or candle that symbolized Christ, the Light of the world. According to custom, the Christmas tree is set up just before Christmas and may remain in place until the Solemnity of Epiphany. The lights of the tree are illuminated after the prayer of blessing. In the home the Christmas tree may be blessed by a parent or another family member, in connection with the evening meal on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time on Christmas Day. Blessing Prayer for your Christmas Tree (Standing before the tree, with the tree lights turned off) Lord our God, we praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we illumine this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. (At the conclusion of the prayer, the lights of the tree are then illuminated.) Thank you!!! The Thanksgiving Basket ministry would like to thank all who participated this year! Through the generosity of our parishioners, we helped 476 people in 82 families celebrate the blessing of season with a Thanksgiving meal. A big thanks to the SAS Faculty and Staff, Child Care Center, the Green family and Cub Scouts. December 18, th Sunday of Advent

4 THANK YOU TO THE 312 PARISHIONER FAMILES WHO HAVE MADE A PLEDGE TO THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN!! So the thing with God is this, in every parish boundary, people in the body of Christ in that parish have every gift in that is necessary for the good of that parish. So in this parish we have what we need to fulfill the $12 million dollars that this project is going to cost. So I want to invite you to pray about how is He calling you to make a gift of yourself and particularly a financial gift of yourself for this project. Because this project is going to enable other people to encounter Him in this life time and thus for all eternity. So pray and ask the Lord and he will answer. Fr.
