WELCOME Linda Lujan Dr. Lujan welcomed members to the PCAC meeting at CGCC best kept secret location, the Sun Lakes Center. Dr. Lujan thanked Rhonda Curtis for serving a second year as Chair of PCAC. Dr. Lujan shared a quote by Corinne McLaughlin and Gordon Davidson on page 2 of her attached PowerPoint presentation. 2. ADVISORY COUNCIL INTRODUCTIONS Rhonda Curtis Ms. Curtis had the members go around the room to introduce themselves and asked each member to share one item from their bucket list. 3. DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION Maria Wise Dr. Wise gave a PowerPoint presentation about what is developmental education, what CGCC is doing to address it, best practices, and future plans. To view Dr. Wise s PowerPoint presentation, please go to pages Developmental education is pre-college level classes. Sixty percent of incoming students place into at least one developmental level course. Sixteen percent of students pass developmental math and move on to college level math. Here s a few of the ways CGCC is addressing developmental education: o One time registration learning begins on day one 3 P a g e
4 o Student success courses o Student workshops o Faculty advising sessions academic pathways o Linking learning communities to one or more classes For Fall 2013, there are 36 learning communities and 22 are in developmental education Here are an example of some of the college s future plans: o $15,000 from the Champagne, Chocolate and all that Jazz scholarship event will be dedicated to developmental education students o Beginning Fall 2013, the college will begin rewarding students for completing developmental education requirements o Offer student success learning labs Dr. Lujan said that 32% of high school students test into developmental education. Many students do not take the placement test seriously. In addition, there are just as many honor students as developmental students. 4. NEW ADVENTURES IN LEARNING Bobbie Reed Bobbie Reed, President of New Adventures in Learning, gave a presentation about the New Adventures in Learning which is housed at the Sun Lakes Center. New Adventures in Learning is an Institute for Learning in Retirement organization for mature adults, who share a curiosity and desire for learning. Attached is a Summer 2012 curriculum of classes that are offered. Ms. Reed said there are multiple enrollment cycles throughout the year. There is a competition for getting classes so it s encouraged to sign up early. The instructors are volunteers and they love teaching in this facility. All students that are enrolled in classes are also enrolled in CGCC. To read more about the New Adventures in Learning, please click here. Dr. Lujan thanked Bobbie Reed for her presentation. Dr. Lujan stressed community in community college is how we address community needs. Maria Reyes said we use the Sun Lakes Center for other uses too. For example, the Dignity Health nursing simulation labs are located on the first floor. In addition, Dr. Lujan said in the near future the Corporate College might be located at this facility. 5. COLLEGE UPDATE Linda Lujan Dr. Lujan went over the attached materials located in the members folders. Dr. Lujan thanks Dr. Cindy Barnes Pharr for the branding and the use of colors throughout our new brochures. Dr. Lujan invited the members to the 22 nd Annual Commencement Ceremony on May 10 th. The commencement speaker is Congressman Matt Salmon. 5 Dr. Lujan reviewed A Common Thread, One Maricopa District Wide Initiatives, and Enrollment Growth PowerPoint slides on pages Dr. Lujan shared the Spring Highlights PowerPoint slides on pages Champagne, Chocolate & all that Jazz raised $31,000 in student scholarships. Dr. Lujan thanked Dr. Cindy Barnes Pharr for being the main driver of this event. Dr. Lujan invited the members to Teal & Silver Awards Ceremony on May 7th at 7:30 a.m. at the Williams Campus.
