1 June 26 and July Parish Bulletin Issue 21 Volume XLVIII ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana (225) Fax (225) Website: On this Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the readings describe anything but an ordinary time. They are disturbing and they leave us disturbed. The Old Testament reading recounts a young man's radical break with the past to follow a new path. The Gospel describes how life as we know it is abruptly changed if we follow the call of Christ. The psalm and Paul assure us that such life-altering change is possible only because of the power of God's love. We are presented with a stark choice. To love as God loves, we must leave our old lives behind. We must leave behind not just the bad, the selfish, and the evil but the ordinary, our daily work, and the important, our families, our lives. Loving as God loves requires a radical transformation, not a smooth transition. NEVER CAN SAY GOOD-BYE In First Kings, Elijah chooses Elisha to be his successor and requires that he leave behind his work, his family, and all the niceties of conventional life, like saying good-bye. It is not easy for Elisha to take up the mantle, to abandon all that he knows and loves. But he does it. The psalm and Galatians remind us that, when all that is familiar is gone, God offers us a refuge and a new freedom. Luke insists that all the niceties of life must be left behind by Jesus and those who would follow him to his suffering, death, and resurrection. But none of those niceties, however important they seem at the time, is necessary for those who choose the radical life of suffering, death, resurrection, and love. It is a stark choice and a difficult one but it is the only choice that offers perfect love. IS THIS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO ST. ALOYSIUS? We are delighted that you have joined us for worship and we hope that you will return to pray with us often. If you have moved into the area, we invite you to become a member. Please visit or call the parish office at or visit our website at May His Spirit grow in you! Have a safe and fun 4th of July! No Morning Mass on Monday, July 4, 2016 June 26 and July 3, th and 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time

2 June 25-26, 2016 Dear friends, Our Challenge A new future is possible only when we let go of the past. Elijah s call for Elisha to succeed him as God s prophet reflects a proper attitude toward the past. We will never be ready for new challenges and greater possibilities until we are open to new ways of thinking and seeing. In his letter to the Galatians, St. Paul encouraged his converts to let go of their past sin and guilt. He reminded them that they had been called to live in liberty because Christ had set them free from the inferior views of the past. Christ had reconciled them to God and to one another through his own redeeming love. Our passage this weekend from Luke s gospel reminds me that Jesus response to every situation was exceptional. As he was walking into the hands of his enemies, he was battling old prejudices that separated one religion from another. Far from wanting to call down vengeance on his enemies, Jesus held out the hand of forgiveness and reconciliation. Establishing priorities is part of the business of living. In fact, it is not only something we ought to do, it is something we do whether we realize it or not! We are making value judgments all the time and deciding what we will do - - or not do - - about them. In the life of faith there is an ongoing invitation to more mature discipleship by putting first things first. Putting first things first unusually means letting go of certain hurts and the satisfaction of getting even. Retaliation and vengeance are primitive emotions that Jesus condemned in no uncertain terms. Christ calls us to the holy work of reconciliation. To err is human, to forgive is divine. This is a truth that cannot be fully appreciated until we have tried to forgive and forget some past injustice or wound. But Christ has taught us that an unforgiving heart cannot receive forgiveness. We seal ourselves in our own sins when we seal ourselves off from the sins of others. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy 33 Days to Morning Glory St. Aloysius Parish is forming a group to participate in 33 DAYS TO MORNING GLORY, a 33-day do-it-yourself retreat in preparation for Marian Consecration. Each day participants, individually, will pray, read from the writings of Saints Louis de Montfort, Mazimillian Kolbe, Mother Teresa, or John Paul II, and then meditate on the readings. The group will meet once a week for one hour. The first retreat begins on July 13 and ends with consecration on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. There will be an informational meeting on June 28 after 8:00 a.m. mass in the church. It is my great hope that, during the course of this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, all the baptized may experience the joy of belonging to the Church and rediscover that the Christian vocation, just like every particular vocation, is born from within the People of God, and is a gift of divine mercy. The Church is the house of mercy, and it is the soil where vocations take root, mature and bear fruit. POPE FRANCIS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Process Needs You The first line of Pope Francis call for the year of Mercy says Jesus is the face of God s Mercy. So the challenge for Christians is how to respond to that mercy that we have received; how do we be merciful. One way to live out God s mercy is through The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Paragraph 4 of the Rite states that the RCIA is a gradual process that takes place within the community of the faithful and the faithful provide an example that will help the catechumens to obey the Holy Spirit more generously. A deeper reading and understanding of that short statement in the Rite instructs us to involve the whole community as mentors for our Catechumens and Candidates in their apprenticeship into the Catholic Christian faith. We have six people who recently began their journey (Inquiry) and are preparing for Full Communion in the Fall. Each person needs a sponsor from this community to join them for one hour after 9:00 mass each Sunday. St. Aloysius community has all the gifts it needs to show God s mercy to those people who seek to join us. Please consider becoming a Sponsor and learning more about your faith journey as you share your faith and mentor another person. For more information contact Rebecca East at or reast@staloysiusparish.com. June 26 and July 3, th and 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time

5 July 2-3, 2016 Our Challenge Dear friends, The idea that the Christian faith is a sad affair is difficult to understand when the word rejoice appears so many times in scripture and in our liturgies, as it does in today s passage from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Again and again the people of God are given reason to rejoice and be glad because of their ongoing relationship to God. St. Paul reminds the Galatians and us that joy or happiness in the Christian scheme of things means much more than having a good laugh or going to an extravagant party. Both joy and happiness include that deep sense of peace that comes from knowing that both our present lives and our future belong to Jesus Christ. In our gospel passage from Luke, the seventy-two disciples that Jesus sent out came back filled with jubilation because they had experienced life s greatest joy and most sublime happiness. They had been able to make a worthwhile contribution to the world. They had been able to help other people turn their lives around. The Christian faith s repeated emphasis on self-sacrifice tends to obscure or even overlook its positive concern for our personal well-being. Christianity is a religion that approves and supports the human quest for personal fulfillment, satisfaction, happiness, and joy. But it does draw a clear line between genuine joy and superficial happiness. We seek happiness in a thousand ways, and the faster we pursue happiness the farther away it becomes from us. Happiness cannot be collected like butterflies or books. Happiness comes from making other people happy. Joy comes from blessing someone else. Why is the world so miserable when everyone wants to be happy? If being happy were like being rich, we could understand why there are so many unhappy people. There just wouldn t be enough happiness to go around. But happiness is within the reach of every person, rich or poor, educated or uneducated. All we have to do to be happy is to make some worthwhile contribution to the world. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy EVENTS OF INTEREST IN THE AREA CASA Volunteers Needed Children need to do more than just survive. They deserve to thrive in the safety and love of a family. However, some children have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care due to abuse or neglect at the hands of their parents or caregivers. You can help one of these children reach a forever family by becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate. CASA volunteers provide a voice for these children to help them reach safe, permanent homes and ensure their needs are being met. CASA volunteers do not provide legal representation, nor do they replace social workers. A CASA volunteer is an independent voice speaking solely for the child. Capital Area CASA Association needs volunteers in order to continue serving every child who needs a voice in East Baton Rouge Parish. No special background is required. The first step to getting involved is to attend a 45-minute informational session at the CASA office, 848 Louisiana Ave. For dates and more information, call (225) , visit or volunteer@casabr.org.
