1 2019 NIRSEF Awards Script Good Afternoon and welcome to the 2019 Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair. On behalf of the NIRSEF committee, thank you to all participants, parents, teachers, volunteers, and friends joining us today, as well as our financial and award sponsors. All students have earned a ribbon decided by category judges early this morning. Special teams have separately determined the winners of nearly 200 awards. Award winners will receive a certificate and most physical prizes today. Cash awards will require a monetary slip to be returned to us. READ WINNERS NAMES AND SCHOOLS FOR ALL AWARDS Please hold your applause until all names have been announced for each award. 1-3: U.S. Metric Association Awards E, J, S The U.S. Metric Association provides certificates of merit at the elementary, junior and senior levels to outstanding projects that involve a significant amount of quantitative measurement which best uses the SI metric system for those measurements. The winners are 4-5: American Meteorological Society J, S The American Meteorological Society awards certificates in recognition of a junior and senior level student who exhibit outstanding projects in the areas of meteorological sciences. The winners are 7: ASM- J The Association of Material Science awards a certificate to the most Outstanding Exhibit in Materials Science. The winner is 10: NASA EARTH System Science Award -E NASA s Science Mission Directorate supports hundreds of programs, activities, events, and resources, including museum and science center exhibitions, partnerships with universities, and research projects that allow students and teachers to participate in NASA missions. The NASA Earth System Science Award goes to an Elementary project that demonstrates this mission. The winner is 11: Society for In Vitro Biology S Grade 11 The Society of In Vitro Biology awards a certificate to the most outstanding 11 th grade project in the areas of plant or animal In Vitro Biology or tissue culture. The winner is 1
2 12: American Psychological Association J This award recognizes outstanding research in psychology under the category of behavioral and social sciences. The winner is 13: Mu Alpha Theta S The Mu Alpha Theta award recognizes an individual or group senior level project demonstrating the most challenging, thorough and creative investigation of a problem involving modern mathematics. This project may not necessarily be in the Mathematics category. The winner is 14-23: Water Crusader Award E, J The Indiana Water Environment Association sponsors ten Water Crusader Awards for outstanding water related projects at the Elementary and Junior levels. The winners are 24-26: Stockholm Junior Water Prize S The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is the most prestigious award for youth projects in water environmental science. The senior level winners will each receive a certificate and can register to compete at the state and national levels. The winners are 27: NOAA Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award S This award, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, honors the senior recipient whose research emphasizes NOAA s mission to understand and predict changes in the Earth s environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our Nation s needs. The winner is 28: Yale Science and Engineering S/Gr11 The Yale Science and Engineering Association provides a senior award to an 11 th grade student for an outstanding project in the areas of physical sciences and engineering. For this award the recipient will receive a certificate and a medallion. The winner is 2
3 29-38: ETHOS of Elkhart Microscope Awards in the Life Sciences E The Experiencing Technology and Hands on Science (ETHOS) Center in Elkhart presents 10 Microscope Awards to outstanding elementary projects in the area of the Life Sciences. The winners are : DNA Learning Center Awards E, J The Notre Dame DNA Learning Center is a hands-on science center devoted to modern biology education. This advanced science education center is a local resource to inspire young students to pursue careers in science and to build a knowledge base that will extend into their educational and post-educational careers. Here to present the awards is The Elementary runners-up are The Elementary Top Prizes are The Junior Top Prizes are 45-47: Expanding Your Horizons 6 th, 7 th, 8 th Grade J The Expanding Your Horizons program sponsors one award for top female projects in each of the 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grades. Awardees will receive a certificate and a scholarship to attend the 2019 Expanding Your Horizons STEM conference on the University of Notre Dame campus on Saturday, March 30 th : 48-50: Purdue Univ. School of Agriculture Awards E, J, S The Purdue University School of Agriculture sponsors 3 awards for an outstanding elementary, junior, and senior project that relates to food, agriculture or natural resources. The recipients will all receive certificates of merit. The winners are 51-60: JINA-CEE Excellence Award E The Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics Center for the Evolution of Elements at the University of Notre Dame presents 10 Awards to outstanding elementary projects in the areas of the Physical Sciences and Engineering. There is some assembly required for extra fun. The winners are 62-63: Starbase J STARBASE Indiana is a premier educational program, sponsored by the Department of Defense. At STARBASE Indiana students participate in challenging "hands-on, minds-on" activities in Science, 3
4 Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM and interact with STEM professionals to explore careers and observe STEM applications in the real world. Along with certificates and swag, winners can attend their summer camp for free. The winners are Buy Me Toys.Com Awards E, J, S Buy Me Toys.Com, located on Grape Road in Mishawaka is the area's primary source for comic books, graphic novels and collectible toys. They support scientific curiosity and imagination. Winners of these awards were selected for their creativity in connecting a popular topic in science fiction to the real world. Winners will receive books and swag. The winners are 68-70: Notre Dame Center for STEM Education Awards - J The University of Notre Dame's Center for STEM Education seeks to help all young people engage and excel in the STEM disciplines. Three winners in the Junior Division have been selected for the Notre Dame Center for STEM Education awards which recognize individuals who embody the hallmark traits of many successful STEM professionals - curiosity, creativity, perseverance, and social responsibility. Winners will receive a certificate along with a scholarship to attend the Center-sponsored summer Science and Engineering camp with a friend. The winners are 71: The Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics Award E The Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics is a Physics Frontier Center supported by the National Science Foundation. One elementary division award winner will receive a scholarship to the 2018 JINA Art 2 Science Camp where participants gain experience through an integrated STEAM approach to learning. The winner is 72-73: St Joseph County Public Library 42 prize for Science, the universe, and everything J,S Saint Joseph County Public Library is excited about technology and the future that lies ahead for today's youth. SJCPL is determined to encourage our community to learn more about science and technology. The winners are. Here to present the awards are 4
5 74-79: Science Policy Initiative Elementary E, J, S The Science Policy Initiative at Notre Dame is a student-run organization seeking to engage students in issues at the intersection of science and public policy, working to affect policy change and communicate the value of scientific research to society at large. Along with certificates, winners will receive prizes. Here to present the award is 82-91: Broadcom MASTERS Rising Stars Competition J The Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) is a national competition for 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade students who participate in an SSP-affiliated fair. The top 10% of the junior division participants have been selected for this honor. Each nominee needs to complete an online application to continue in the national competition and be eligible for valuable prizes and awards including a $25,000 education award. The winners are 92-97: U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine Corps Awards J, S The Naval Science Awards, offered at the junior and senior levels, are sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. I would like to introduce??? to present these awards : U.S Air Force Office of Research (Research Laboratory Awards) J, S The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory sponsors four awards exhibiting excellence in research with applications to the U.S. Air Force. I would like to introduce.. to present these awards : St. Joseph Chapter of the American Chemical Society Award grade 3 E, J, S The St. Joseph County Local Section of the American Chemical Society pursues the Society s mission in promoting excellence in science education and community outreach through their National Chemistry Week efforts, including sponsorship of and participation in the ETHOS Science Spooktacular, a two-day interactive event for Michiana children and families. Along with certificates, winners in grades 3-8 will receive a deck of science cards and winners in grades 9-12 will receive a cash prize. The winners are (have someone line the up in order) : Serim Research Awards E The Serim Research Corporation sponsors 10 elementary awards in the life and physical sciences area. The award recipients will each receive certificates and $25 checks in recognition of their work. The winners are 5
6 133: Biophysical Award - S The Biophysical Award is given to an outstanding senior project in biophysics. The winner will receive a certificate and $100. The winner is 134: INTEL Excellence in Computer Science Award S The Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award is presented to an outstanding senior project to encourage increased participation in the field of computer sciences. The award winner will be mailed a certificate and a $200 check from INTEL. The winner is : South Bend Medical Foundation Award E, J, S The South Bend Medical Foundation sponsors awards at the elementary, junior and senior level in the area of Medicine and Health. Winners receive a tote bag full of prizes and a gift card. The winners is : Harper Cancer Research Institute Award S Investigators in the Mike and Josie Harper Cancer Research Institute (HCRI) are dedicated to conducting innovative and integrative research that confronts the complex challenges of cancer. The winner of the Harper Cancer Research Institute will receive a shirt and $50 check. Here to present the award is (???) : Spirit of Science Awards J Sponsored by the Univ. of Notre Dame Office of Undergraduate Research, the Spirit of Science Awards honors six junior level students whose projects best demonstrate exemplary scientific research methods. Spirit of Science winners are invited to attend lunch on campus prior to displaying their projects at the Notre Dame undergraduate research symposium for College of Science Students (COS-JAM) on May 4th. The winners are : Michiana Astronomical Society Award E The Michiana Astronomical Society presents two awards for outstanding projects at the Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair that recognize projects in Physics and Astronomy. Recipients will receive certificates and cash prizes in acknowledgement of their outstanding projects. The winners are 6
7 151: Marian High School Award J (8 th grade) Marian Science seeks to promote science research by choosing an 8th grade projects that best illustrate the full research process. The award is a certificate, a pin, a $50 check, and automatic entry into the Honors Science program if they attend Marian. The winners are : Saint Mary s College Dineen Award E, J, S The Saint Mary s College Biology Department Dineen Award is presented to outstanding projects at the elementary and junior and senior levels in the area of the life sciences. Award winners will each receive a certificate and a $50 check. The winners are : ND Energy J, S The Center for Sustainable Energy at Notre Dame presents the ND Energy awards for outstanding energy related projects in the junior and senior divisions. Each winner will be awarded a solarpowered backpack. The winners are : University of Notre Dame Psychology Dept. Awards E, J The Univ. of Notre Dame Psychology Department sponsors two awards for outstanding elementary and junior projects in the area of behavioral and social sciences. The winners of this award will each receive a certificate and $100 in recognition of their outstanding work. The winners are : Univ. of Notre Dame Mathematics Dept. Award E, J, S The Univ. of Notre Dame Mathematics Dept. presents awards at the elementary, junior and senior levels to projects displaying excellence in mathematics or computer science. The award recipients will each receive certificates and will be mailed cash prizes of $100 for elementary, $150 for junior and $200 for senior projects in recognition of their work. The winners are : Physics Club Awards E, J, S The Physics Club sponsors 4 awards to outstanding elementary, junior or senior projects in the area of Physics and Astronomy. These students will each receive a certificate and a $50. The winners are 7
8 167: Nripen Biswas Award E The Physics Department sponsors the Nripen Biswas Award in memory of their colleague and friend in order to inspire elementary students in the area of physics. The outstanding elementary project winner will receive a certificate, and $100. The winner is 168: Kathleen Delanghe Prize J The Physics Club sponsors the Kathleen Delanghe Prize in memory of this dedicated staff member and friend to physics students. The outstanding project winner will receive a certificate, and $100. The winner is : Univ. of Notre Dame Dept. of Chemistry & Biochemistry Awards J, S The Univ. of Notre Dame Dept. of Chemistry & Biochemistry sponsors awards at the junior and senior levels to outstanding projects in chemistry or biochemistry. The award recipients will each receive certificates and the Junior winner will be mailed a $100 check and the senior winner a $200 check from the Dept. The winners are : Univ. of Notre Dame Dept. of Biological Sciences Awards E, J, S The Univ. of Notre Dame Dept. of Biological Sciences presents its Outstanding Biological Scientist awards at the elementary, junior and senior levels to outstanding projects in the life sciences. The award recipients will each receive certificates and cash prizes of $75, $100 or $200. The winners are 174: ACM The Association for Computing Machinery sponsors the Future of Computing Award for the senior project that best demonstrates creativity and curiosity in computing. The award recipient will receive a certificate and $200. The winner is 175: Karen Morris Award J The Karen Morris Award is named for the past Director of the NIRSEF who currently serves as program director of the Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program for Indiana. This award honors a Junior level project that exemplifies scientific curiosity. The winner will receive a certificate and Chemistry Kit. Here to present the award is Karen Morris 8
9 176: Richard Feynman Award for Enthusiasm and Scientific Curiosity S Inspired by a former INTEL ISEF participant and graduate student who attended Notre Dame, this Award recognizes a senior project that displays the unique qualities of enthusiasm for science and scientific curiosity. The winner will receive a copy of two of Richard Feynman s books. The winner is : HSEF Awards E, J, S This year, four excellent projects in the elementary divisions, six in the junior divisions, and ten in the senior division will be selected to represent the Northern Indiana region at the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 30th at the Center in Indianapolis. All winners will also receive some gas money for the trip. All HSEF winners please remain on the stage The HSEF Elementary Division winners are The HSEF Junior Division winners are The HSEF Senior Division winners are 197: Mario Borelli Award in Physical Sciences and Engineering E The Mario Borelli Award honors an elementary project in the Physical Science and Engineering and is named for the past Director of the NIRSEF. This award recognizes the outstanding project at the elementary level in the area of Physical Sciences and Engineering that will be advancing to the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair. The winner will receive a certificate and a $100 check in recognition of his/her outstanding project. The winner is 198: Emil T. Hofman Award in Life Sciences E The Emil T. Hofman Award in Life Sciences honors a past Director of the Fair who has influenced many students at Notre Dame in the areas of science and medicine. This award recognizes the outstanding project at the elementary level in the area of Life Sciences that will be advancing to the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair. The winner also will receive a certificate and a $100 check in recognition of his/her outstanding project. The winner is : IUSB Junior Research Award Life & Physical Sciences J The Indiana University South Bend Biology Department honors an outstanding junior project in the life sciences. Indiana University South Bend also honors an outstanding junior project in the physical sciences. Here to present these awards is Dr. Jim McLister, Associate Professor of Vertebrate Anatomy & Animal Behavior at Indiana University, South Bend. 9
10 201: University of Notre Dame College of Engineering Dean s Award S 202: Univ. of Notre Dame College of Science Dean s Award S The University of Notre Dame College of Engineering and College of Science present the Dean s Award to the top two senior projects. In addition to a certificate, the recipients will receive a $150 check. Here to present the awards is Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Director of Judging at NIRSEF, Dr David Leighton This concludes today s program. The 20 participants advancing to the State Fair please meet on the stage for a brief check-in. All other participants may remove their projects. Thank you and we hope to see you again next year. 10
