They are Stephen M. Curtis, president of Community College of Philadelphia; Jack E. Daniels, president of Los Angeles Southwest College; and Ann Valentine, chancellor of the Wabash Valley Region of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. Forums are slated at each of Madison College s regional campuses and at its Truax campus in Madison. The committee includes chairperson Jan Bultema, senior vice president, human resources, at University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics; Jon Bales, superintendent of the DeForest Area School District; and retired educational administrator Carolyn Stoner. An advisory committee comprised of College faculty, staff and students; community members; and business and education leaders were involved in the preliminary search and screen process to identify the three finalists recommended to the District Board. 3 Dr. Stephen M. Curtis Biographical Statement Dr. Stephen M. Curtis was named the fifth president of Community College of Philadelphia in August Dr. Curtis previously served as President of Hudson Valley Community College/SUNY and, in The City University of New York (CUNY), as Acting President of Queens College, Acting President of Borough of Manhattan Community College, and as Dean of Academic Affairs at that same institution. After graduating from Middlebury College in Vermont with an A.B. in music, Dr. Curtis completed an M.M. and Ph.D. in music at Washington University in St. Louis. He began his career in higher education as a member of the music faculty at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, later becoming chair of the department. He also held the position of St. Louis Coordinator of the Mellon Liberal Arts Project, a nationwide project dedicated to revitalizing the liberal arts in urban community colleges, followed by appointment as Associate Dean of Humanities. Dr. Curtis has fostered his college s development as a leader in workforce and economic development, strengthened the critical link to K-12 schools and university baccalaureate programs, served as a staunch proponent of educational technology, and cultivated initiatives that produced documented increases in student retention and improved student outcomes. He has led in the creation of a college-wide diversity plan that promotes parity in student learning outcomes and has consistently implemented outcomes-based strategic planning. Under his stewardship, his college has completed major expansions of three of its four campuses, and the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation has successfully completed its first-ever capital campaign. Within the Philadelphia community, Dr. Curtis serves on a number of boards and advisory committees, including the Boards of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Urban Affairs Coalition, Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress, Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board. He is past president of the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges and during his tenure oversaw a dramatic revision of the state policy framework for community colleges. He has also served on a number of national boards, most recently co-chairing the 21 st Century Initiative Committee on Faculty Engagement and Leadership Development for the American Association of Community Colleges.

5 Dr. Jack E. Daniels, III Biographical Statement Dr. Jack E. Daniels, III assumed his position as president of Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC) in July 2006 after serving for three years as president at Lincoln Land Community College. Prior to his role at Lincoln Land Community College, Dr. Daniels served for five years as president of Central College, one of five community colleges within the Houston Community College System. In addition, he served as a tenured psychology faculty member at Laney College and has held several administrative roles at other community colleges and a baccalaureate/graduate granting institution. Dr. Daniels is an accomplished leader who specializes in strategic planning, facilities master planning, implementing learner-centered college initiatives, articulating programs with universities and providing leadership to developing programs that meet economic development and community needs. At LASC, he has led the campus efforts to improve student success as well as its participation as Los Angeles Community College District s (LACCD) first Achieving the Dream college. Dr. Daniels also provided leadership to the creation of the Passage program. Passages focuses on establishing learning communities for males of color and provides mentoring, counseling and tutoring services. More than 125 students are actively participating in the initiative and there has been significant increases in retention and persistence in college programs for these students during its first year of operation. Throughout his career, Dr. Daniels has maintained an intense focus and vision on student success. Dr. Daniels facilitated the campus 10,000 Small Businesses Program through the Goldman Sachs Foundation. The program has been the foundation for restructuring the college s business department and how it addresses the needs of small businesses and small business development. He also oversees one of the LACCD s largest campus construction projects at LASC with more than $400 million to modernize the campus with sustainable buildings and new academic resources. These efforts are part of the LACCD s $6 billion Bond Construction Program to revitalize its nine colleges. Under Dr. Daniels leadership, five state-of-the-art facilities have been constructed at LASC in addition to a central plant. Two lecture halls and an athletic center are currently being remodeled to meet student and community needs. Additional construction includes a career technical education building, a remodeled campus library, and new academic spaces for varied technologies. When the college s projects are completed, the buildings will meet silver or platinum LEED TM certification standards. Dr. Daniels has also managed projects that have enhanced the college s technology infrastructure and has led the effort to have smart classrooms throughout the campus. The college has an innovative partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District that allows students to enroll concurrently in Middle College High School, which is housed on LASC s campus. High school students can take college-level courses and earn a diploma and an Associate of Arts degree at the same time. Recently, Dr. Daniels led the effort to collaborate with the Los Angeles Unified School District to construct a new high school on LASC s campus. Dr. Daniels earned a Bachelor s of Arts degree from Huntington College in Indiana and a Ph.D. from the Wright Institute Graduate School of Psychology in California. He recently was elected to the California Community Colleges CEO Board where he serves on a 15-member board of directors to review and develop education policy issues before the state Board of Governors and the legislature.

7 Dr. Ann M. Valentine Biographical Statement Dr. Ann Valentine became Chancellor of the Wabash Valley Region of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana in July Her scope of experience includes breadth and depth in instruction, physical plant, human resources, fundraising, and budgeting along with progressively responsible leadership in complex, multi-campus institutions. Prior to joining Wabash Valley, she served for six years as President of Minnesota State Community and Technical College. She has also served as Vice President and Provost at Gateway Technical College in Wisconsin for five years; as Chief Academic Officer at Independence Community College in Kansas; and Dean for General Education at Moraine Park Technical College in Wisconsin. She coordinated the Interdisciplinary Health Professions Education Program in the Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences at the University of Iowa while also developing and delivering curriculum for the Program. Dr. Valentine served as a faculty member and grants developer at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for several years. She has taught political science and interdisciplinary social sciences; developed and managed grants; published and presented numerous articles; and served as a grants reviewer for the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education. Recently she completed volunteer service on a doctoral committee at Cardinal Stritch University on behalf of a faculty member at Gateway Technical College. She also currently serves as a Commissioner for the American Association of Community Colleges and serves on numerous local and regional boards and commissions. Among others, she is a founding member of the 100 Women Who Care Steering Committee in Vigo County, IN, and also serves on the Economic Development Commission Board; Chamber of Commerce Board and Policy Committee; United Way Board; Workforce Investment Board; and as an officer of the Rural Health Innovation Collaborative Consortium Board. Dr. Valentine earned an Associate s of Arts degree from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a Bachelor s of Arts degree from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids; and both a Master of Public Administration and doctoral degree from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She has achieved a number of awards and honors, including induction into the Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame and designated as Alumnus of the Year at Mount Mercy College. She has four adult children, each of whom has earned at least part of their higher education degrees at Gateway Technical College and Minnesota State Community and Technical College. She enjoys reading, horseback riding, and foster/adoption of rescued dogs.
