1 Customized Supply Solutions & Inventory Management 24 Hour Emergency Service: (248) Largest Midwest Stocking Distributor for Hydraulic & Pneumatic Seals & Packings VOLUME 6 ISSUE #21 APRIL, 2017 CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT & EXPANSION By Jim Gumm Owner / Editor of THE BLITZ If I were the czar of college football there aren t a lot of things that I would change about the sport. I love the regular season in college football. No other sport has a better regular season. I would prefer to have an 8 team playoff but I can live with 4. I would like to see the clock continue to run after first downs. Stopping the clock after first downs does not need to happen. I would also like to see college football go to the narrow NFL hash marks. There is, however, one major change that I would make that some will not agree with. I would limit conferences to have a maximum of 12 teams. I believe that limiting conference affiliation to 12 would allow there to be 6 Power Conference instead of 5 that we currently have. 14 teams in a conference is just too many, in my opinion. I would like every conference to have the same number of teams and every school would be required to play at least 5 true road games every season to try to force schools to play more road non-conference games than what is currently the case. As for the 12 team conferences? I would keep most conferences intact but I would make some changes. Geography is big in my opinion for the health of the sport. I would want conference schools to be as close as possible. A perfect example of this would be Notre Dame. I would require all schools to be a member of a conference and eliminate being Independent as an option. Notre Dame is located in northwestern Indiana right in the heart of the Big Ten and I believe they would be a perfect fit in that league. I would want Nebraska to stay in the Big Ten as well so obviously there would be some changes in that league. I would move former SEC member Georgia Tech back to the SEC and move Kentucky to the ACC along with Maryland. I would move Colorado, Texas A&M and Missouri back to the Big 12. The American Athletic Conference would get traditional football power Penn State along with Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Rutgers, West Virginia and Boston College. I d bring Brigham Young into the Pac-12 as a rival for Utah. I realize that this is not going to happen and the fans of some of the schools leaving the Big Ten and SEC would be furious at the thought of leaving those powerful leagues but the way the conferences are set up right now just seems forced on us. The state of Missouri never has and never will be in the southeastern region of the United States. Mizzou still doesn t seem comfortable in the SEC. Missouri would be a better fit in the Big Ten than the SEC but they are a natural in the Big 12. I can remember when the Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Braves were in the NL Western Division from 1969 until the mid- 90 s while the Chicago Cubs and the St Louis Cardinals were in the Eastern Division. It made no sense. Dallas is not an eastern city but the Dallas Cowboys, for some reason, remain in the NFC East Division along with New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC. I didn t understood it 40 years ago and I don t understand it now. Rivalries are great and in collegiate sports, geography helps to grow those rivalries. When Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993, they really didn t have a rivalry in that league but over the span of 25 years they have built a great rivalry with Ohio State and pretty strong strong rivalries with Michigan and Michigan State as well. However, their long standing rivalry was and always will be with Pittsburgh. It was one of the greatest rivalries in all of college football and I think they should be in the same conference to help rekindle that rivalry. Louisville and Kentucky should be in the same conference too. Maryland just feels like an ACC school and they belong there just like Missouri feels like a Big 12 school. They could get their rivalry with Kansas back. Texas and Texas A&M should always be in the same conference for obvious reasons. Can we reclaim all of the rivalries? No but I believe the wave of conference expansion the past years hurt college football more than it helped it. Would I like to see Oklahoma vs Nebraska every year? You bet but Nebraska just seems like a better fit in the Big Ten than they did in the Big 12, so some of the moves that were made, were good for the schools and conferences but in my opinion, there was more damage done to the sport than good. I believe some of this has contributed to falling attendance in college football. Below is a look at how I would like to see some of the conferences. It includes the timeline that each conference has sponsored football, then we show the number of football seasons each conference will celebrate in Next are all of the current football members and how many seasons this will make as far as football competition goes, during the upcoming 2017 season. Finally, we list all of the former football members, with the seasons they competed in each conference. The American Athletic Conference was known as the Big East Conference through 2012 when it was renamed. A new charter was not drawn up, thus the American is not a new league, just renamed. As a point of interest, seven schools (Michigan from the Big Ten, Northern Illinois from the MAC, Marshall from the MAC, Temple from the American, Idaho from the Sun Belt, New Mexico State from the Sun Belt and UAB from Conference USA) actually have two stints of membership in those particular conferences. There will be 6 Independents this season. Army, Brigham Young, Idaho, New Mexico State, Navy and Notre Dame. FYI, the NCAA Division I FBS will have 130 members in Idaho will drop down to the FCS level in 2018 but Liberty will move up to FBS. HOW TO READ THIS LIST. We list all 2017 conference members by the their timeline and the total number of seasons they will have fielded a team by the time the 2017 season rolls around. Current Conference Members... Some schools have been affiliated with more than one conference simultaneously and some have been affiliated with different conferences in other sports different from their football affiliation. Several conferences have changed their official name through-out the years and that can cause some confusion. We have decided to use the more modern and most popular name for this list. An example of this would be Fresno State which is listed as having competed in the Big West from Originally the Big West was named the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA) but the league officially changed their name in So instead of listing Fresno State has having played in the PCAA and the Big West , we show that they were in one league from We have placed an asterisk (*) in front of any conference that has changed it s name at some time. However that particular conference officially dissolved in early 1959 and a new conference (Athletic Association of Western Universities) with a new charter was founded to replace the PCC. It was renamed the Pac-8 in 1968, the Pac-10 in 1978 when Arizona and Arizona State joined and the Pac-12 in 2011 when Colorado and Utah were added. The Pac-12 Conference claims the history of the PCC as it s own, but to be historically correct you must separate these two. There is a real beginning and a real end of the Pacific Coast Conference and an actual starting date (July 1, 1959) for the Pac-12 Conference. The Big Ten Conference was founded in 1896 under the name Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives. Unofficially it was referred to as the Western Conference. It was nicknamed the Big Nine Conference after Indiana and Iowa joined and then nicknamed the Big Ten when Michigan rejoined the league. After the University of Chicago dropped out it was again referred to as the Big Nine. It was again known as the Big Ten when Michigan State joined, but the conference s official name was not formally changed to the Big Ten Conference until 1987 and the conference has retained that name even after the additions of Penn State, Nebraska, Maryland and Rutgers that raised membership to 14. The Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA) was formed in 1969 and was renamed the Big West Conference in It ceased sponsoring football following the 2000 season. The Big 12 Conference is not an expanded Big 8 Conference but a totally different conference. It was formed in 1996 with all 8 former Big 8 schools as well as 4 from the defunct Southwest Conference. The American Athletic Conference, known as the Big East Conference until 2012, was founded in 1979 as a basketball league and began sponsoring football in The Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) was formed in It was unofficially called the Big 6 ( ), Big 7 ( ) and Big 8 ( ). The conference officially changed its name in 1964 to the Big 8 Conference and dissolved following the 1995 season. In 1927 the smaller schools of the MVIAA split off and formed the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). To make things even more confusing, in 2007 the Gateway Football Conference from the NCAA Division I FCS was renamed the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC). The Sun Belt was founded in 1976 and began sponsoring football in The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) was formed in It ceased sponsoring football following the 2012 season. WON-LOSS RECORDS PRIOR TO AND AFTER Below we show the 12 school that are new additions to Power 5 conferences since We went back to 2000 to see if their winning percentage has gone up, gone down or stayed fairly consistent. Obviously if a school came from an inferior conference and then ended up in a strong conference, their overall winning percentage would go down. It s the schools that went from one power league to another league that is the most intriguing. Colorado had a fantastic year in 2016 but they still have a way to go to reach their Big 12 record for 11 seasons prior to moving to the Pac-12. Maryland also fall into that same category. The Terps had some success for the previous 14 season that they were in the ACC but it has been more difficult to navigate the Big Ten in the first 3 years of being in that conference. Missouri and Nebraska have pretty much maintained their winning percentage since they switched conferences. However Missouri seems to be trending down while Nebraska seems to be trending up. Probably the most interesting program to examine has been Texas A&M. The Aggies overall winning percentage has vastly improved since moving from the Big 12 to the SEC. To be honest, a lot is the fact that they have feasted on mostly weak non-conference opponents in the regular season. Texas A&M is 20-0 in the regular season vs non-conference opponents in the first 5 years in the SEC. Even with all of that success, Kevin Sumlin is feeling the pressure to do better. He is in league play but the past couple of years his teams have faltered down the stretch. Colorado... Big Colorado... Pac COLORADO Louisville... C-USA Louisville... Big East Louisville... 8 ZATKOFF KITTING SERVICES...Guaranteed Savings Buying kits reduces costs associated with: Purchasing Receiving Inspection Accounting Inventory Control Parts Requisition THE DECISION TO LEAVE THE SEC: SEWANEE, GEORGIA TECH & TULANE When the Southeastern Conference was founded it had 13 schools. Of those 13 original founding members, ten are still in the conference. Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Arkansas and South Carolina joined in 1992 while Missouri and Texas A&M joined in However, there are three schools that voluntarily left the SEC. Those schools are Sewanee, Georgia Tech and Tulane. Sewanee, also known as The University of the South, left the SEC less than a decade after helping to found the conference. Sewanee s de-emphasizing of football makes it the SEC s version of the University of Chicago of the Big Ten who did the exact same thing. The school s athletic program has been non-scholarship ever since, now participating in Division III. Sewanee does hold a place in top-level college football history: In 1899, the Tigers went 12-0 and allowed just 10 points all season. Sewanee was destined for a move away from big-time athletics, but it s interesting to speculate how Tulane and Georgia Tech s football history would have been different had they remained in the Southeastern Conference. Tulane could have remained similar to Vanderbilt in football while being competitive in all other sports while Georgia Tech could have remained a major football powerhouse due to their location in the hotbed for high school talent of Atlanta. On Jan. 24, 1964, Georgia Tech announced its intent to leave the Southeastern Conference. At the center of Georgia Tech s exit was the so-called 140 Rule. SEC schools were allowed 140 scholarships for football and men s basketball; football programs were allowed to sign as many 45 recruits per season. Georgia Tech coach Bobby Dodd believed that other teams were over recruiting, pushing aside underperforming players to clear scholarship space for newer ones. Bill Curry, who played under Bobby Dodd and would later coach Georgia Tech said That rule was an obsession with coach Dodd. I didn t play very much my first two seasons. I was one of those he could have run off. Dodd wanted the SEC to allow fewer signees per recruiting class and had an ardent supporter in Georgia Tech president Edwin Harrison. Georgia Tech almost got the 140 Rule changed at the 1963 SEC winter meetings, but Alabama president Frank Rose, breaking with the stated wishes of then Crimson Tide coach and athletic director Bear Bryant, voted to keep it. That summer, the Atlanta Constitution ran a story proclaiming that Georgia Tech was prepared to leave the SEC over the 140 Rule. The 1964 meetings convened at the downtown Atlanta Americana Motor Hotel with some in the SEC believing that Georgia 8 Tech had delivered an ultimatum: Change the rule or we re out. The Yellow Jackets a technical institute among mostly state universities were seen as an outlier in a conference they had helped found. Some suggested that Bobby Dodd was intrigued by the notion of becoming an independent. But Bill Curry, who was a Georgia Tech junior when the Yellow Jackets left the SEC, said: Coach Dodd met with us afterward and told us it was about that rule. It wasn t just a moral thing. Coach Dodd believed he was being put at a competitive disadvantage because others would over sign and Georgia Tech refused. Dodd would keep players on scholarships until they graduated. He said it wasn t a player s fault if he wasn t good enough to make the team, but rather the coaches fault for misjudging the talent. Dodd would only sign players a year while other schools were signing the maximum 45 and then running off inferior players so they could meet the roster limit. He thought it was unfair and would not withdraw scholarships from players. Dodd proposed changes to the rule at a 1964 meeting of SEC athletics directors and presidents and had the assurance of Alabama head coach Bear Bryant that he would support the measure. However, when the vote came, Bryant was not in attendance and the Alabama president, Frank Rose, voted against it. The vote was 6-6, meaning Rule 140 would remain. Following the vote, Georgia Tech president Edwin Harrision went to the podium and announced his school was withdrawing from the SEC. Tulane was the last of the charter members to leave the SEC, parting in 1965 with intention to broaden its football schedule making pattern, as the Associated Press reported. University president Dr. Herbert E. Longenecker said in 1966 that Tulane s renowned academic profile attracted students from around the country, and the football schedule needed to reflect that. Essentially, leaving the Southeast and barnstorming as an independent was to raise the profile of Tulane University, and Tulane football. The Green Wave s immediate schedule was indeed impressive, featuring Virginia Tech, Miami (FL), Notre Dame, Stanford and a smattering of SEC foes. Tulane planned to continue playing SEC members, making it a precursor to Notre Dame s current partnership with ACC football. But, it didn t last. Rather than become a Southern Notre Dame, Tulane football transformed into a product more comparable to Rice: a great academic institution with limited football success. The Green Wave have had flashes of success in the 50+ years since leaving the SEC, most notably running the table in The Green Wave have played in just two bowls since then. Georgia Tech didn t suffer the decline Tulane endured after leaving the SEC, obviously. The Yellow Jackets have as many national championships as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference as they won in the SEC, matching their 1952 crown with one in We will never know what Georgia Tech & Tulane would have been like in football had they remained in the SEC but it s fun to speculate. SHOULD THE NCAA SUBDIVIDE DIVISION I FBS? It has been discussed before. This is not a story to belittle schools and conferences but it is reality. Can a school from the Mid-American Conference or Sun Belt EVER win a national championship in football? Heck, can a school from either one of those leagues even make it into the 4 team playoffs? The answer is probably not. If the answer is no, they why in the world are they competing in the same division? All of these schools have the same number of players on scholarship but the quality of the athletes on those rosters is significant. We acknowledge that there are really good players that come through those leagues but it s the fact that they are far and few between. There simply are not enough of them. There has been some talk of a separate playoff from the Group of 5 conferences. The fact that is even being discussed is because they also understand the pecking order in college football. It s the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC, Notre Dame and Brigham Young. That s it. I don t like it any more than the fans of schools not included in those conferences listed above but it s been this way for a long time and it simply isn t going to change. That begs the question, Should the NCAA subdivide once more? The NCAA subdivided Division I in Back then they called them Division I-A and Division I-AA. Almost ten years ago they renamed them Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and Division I Championship Subdivision because they didn t like people referring basketball programs as I-A & I-AA. Basketball isn t subdivided and people were wrong to refer to them as such so they figured including the words football, bowl, and championship would discourage that mistake and it probably has. Any way after all of these years there isn t a single member of the Mid-American Conference, Sun Belt Conference, Conference USA, Mountain West Conference or American Athletic Conference that has won a national championship at the highest level. Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Marshall and other have won the national championship prior to moving up to the FBS level but it will not happen at the FBS level for any of those schools. Financially, it was a smart move to move up but at the sacrifice of winning a national championship. It that the worst thing for those schools? No, because they can still have success on the field, win conference titles, win nice bowl games and reap the financial reward that goes with being an FBS school. Nothing against the GMAC Bowl, Military Bowl or the St Petersburg Bowl but ask any of the fans, coaches or players that were part of those national championship teams for Marshall and they ll tell you that, those national championships were better than winning those bowl games. It just seems that there needs to be an opportunity for everyone to be a champion but in collegiate athletics it just doesn t seem that everyone has a fair chance. It even is the same for basketball. Other that the American Athletic and the Big East in basketball, the other conference really don t have much of a chance to win the national championship. Sure, we have seen nice runs for a George Mason, VCU, Butler and Gonzaga but they didn t win the national championship. Should Division I subdivide into Division I-A, Division I-AA and Division I-AAA? I-A would be all the schools in the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC, Notre Dame and BYU. Division I-AA would be the MAC, Sun Belt, C-USA, MWC, American, Army, UMass and New Mexico State. Division I-AAA would all of the schools currently at the FCS level. Keep the scholarships where they currently are but allow there to be three champions crowned each year. You could allow each division to decide how many they want in their playoff brackets. They can play on campus or at neutral sites. It s up to them. Allow a player at Western Michigan, Troy, Cincinnati, Colorado State or Rice an opportunity to win a national championship. It s not the worst thing college football could do. The big boys from the other conferences would still continue to play them in non-conference games but at the end of the season each would go in different directions for the post season. The schools not fortunate to make it in the two brackets could even play bowl games against each other like they do now. I know this is a pipe dream but that the things I have listed will ever occur but, I ve always thought it was so unfair that if a guy signs up to play for UTEP, Tulsa or Arkansas State that he has forfeited his chance to win a national championship but if he signs with Alabama, Ohio State, North Dakota State, or Mount Union he can win a national title. It is crazy that the system is set up like that but it is. College football is the best sport that we have in America, in my opinion, mostly because of the allegiances that we have with our schools, conferences and geographical regions and I am not one that wants to make change for the sake of change but when it comes to opportunity, I can t help but wonder if crowning 1 more national champion would be bad for the sport. Right now we crown a national champion in NAIA, NCAA Division III, Division II, Division I FCS and Division I FBS. I don t think 1 more would be too bad. This is not like changing a rule. Heck there are some people still upset that the American League added the Designated Hitter back in 1973, that college football added the 2-point conversion in 1958 or that the ABA added the 3-point line in This is just tweaking Division I some.
