EXECUTIVE CHAMBERS HONOLULU BENJAMIN J. CAYETANO GOVERNOR MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR BENJAMIN J. CAYETANO TO THE ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS November 6-11, 2001 On behalf of the people of the state of Hawai'i, I send my greetings and warmest aloha to all who have gathered for the forty-second annual convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs. I extend a warm welcome to our visitors from the mainland and all of our islands who are attending this convention. In the wake of the tragic events of September 11, travel has become more difficult. I greatly appreciate your willingness to visit our state and commend your determination to support your organization. I commend the local Chapter of the Association, the O'ahu Council, for the wonderful work it has done in perpetuating the Hawaiian culture and in supporting the community with its charitable work. The theme of this year's convention, "The Dawn of Changing Times," is especially appropriate as we enter a period of new challenges for our nation and our state. I extend my best wishes for an enlightening conference and for continued success in years to come. Aloha, BENJAMIN J. CAYETANO

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU MAYOR'S MESSAGE JEREMY HARRIS MAYOR I am pleased to extend a warm welcome of aloha to the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs on its 42nd annual convention. Your association and its 48 member clubs are invaluable to all of us because of the role you play in perpetuating and preserving the language and culture of our islands. We are a special community to the rest of the world, with an aloha spirit and tradition born of our Hawaiian heritage. As we move into the new century, we look to your association to help us rediscover with renewed appreciation the wisdom and proud legacy left by our Hawaiian ancestors. On behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu, I send my best wishes for a successful and productive convention. JEREMY HARRIS, Mayor City and County of Honolulu

ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CL DBS CHARLES ROSE ASSOCIATION PELEKIKENA ALOHA! KAKOU! In behalf of the Board ofdirectors of the Association ofhawaiian Civic Clubs, I extend our greetings and welcome everyone to our 42nd Annual Convention being held from November 6-11, at the Waikiki Beach Marriot Hotel in Honolulu. We are especially pleased that our neighbor island and mainland clubs are able to be with us. The theme of the convention "Ke Alaula 0 Ka Huliau" (the dawn of changing times) although selected a year ago has special meaning due to the attack on our nation on September 11, and the economic downturn that followed. Clearly we are confronted with changes never thought of a few months ago. Our hearts and prayers go out to the immediate victims of the attack and their families. Additionally, the economic fallout has had specific impact on everyone, including those here in Hawaii. Many of our Ohana and friends have suffered job losses and other hardships. We must work together in finding ways to cope with this horrible event. Let us dedicate this convention to helping each other return tolifeas.w~kn~wit to be. Let us promote fellowship and well-being. Let us re-kindle our well known Aloha spirit and compassion for each other. Your host, the Oahu Council has worked hard to provide us with as pleasant a convention as possible. In their behalf, I request your patience and understmh:iing should you be confronted with any unexpected problem. Lets have a great convention! Charles Rose President

Aloha Kakou 0' AHU DISTRICT COUNCIL JALNA KEALA O'AHU COUNCIL PELEKIKENA We gather at the sands of Mo' i Kakuhihewa, here on the Island famed as the Center of the Sea. It was December 1918, when Prince Kuhio called a group of influential Hawaiian men to his home in Waikiki to consider the future of the Hawaiian people. They had lived through painful times - the Kingdom stolen, a hostile Provisional Government, a puppet Republic and now, existence as a Territory. It was time to start taking back some control over their lives if they were ever to preserve those unique elements inherent in the Hawaiian culture, language and history while revitalizing the spirit of their people. Thus, the first Hawaiian Civic Club, 'Ahahui Kiwila Hawaii 0 Honolulu was born, one of several organizations founded at the time to uplift the Hawaiian people. We are here as heirs to that legacy of Hawaiians who stepped forth confidently as leaders to accept the challenges of change... men and women who accepted that they needed to exist in the Western world, yet worked untiringly to protect and preserve their Hawaiian heritage. Ke Alaula 0 Ka Huliau, The Dawn of Changing Times, our ancestors were at a crossroads, much as we are today. To quote the words of Queen Lili'uokalani, "I could not turn back the timefor the political change, but there is still time to save our heritage. You must remember never to cease to act because you fear you may fail." At this time of great uncertainty, as global foundations uneasily shift and posture, we must believe in ourselves as a native people and the bloodlines that bind us. This is the legacy that serves as our bedrock. Here, at this convention... now, at this con n... believe in the importance the work we must do together to protect our culture, our language, our land and our future as Hawaiians. We must not cease to act. Me ke aloha pumehana,

Brief History of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs As most everyone knows (or should know), the Civic Club movement was the fulfillment of a dream for Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole, who, having served as delegate to Congress as a represnetative of the Territory of Hawai'i, was concerned that his people know more about government and the community at large. He chose as the first president of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu (often referred to as the "Mother Club") a rising young Hawaiian attorney, Mr. William H. Heen. Subsequently, Mr. Heen became very active in Hawaiian politics, rising to the position of State Senator and holding a position of great prestige and respect in the Democratic party. Following the establishment of the Honolulu club, others followed, so that by 1959 there were enough clubs to warrant the formation of an O'ahu Council, comprised of 'Ewa, Honolulu, Ko'olaupoko, Nana'ikapono, Wai'anae, and Waialua-Wahiawa. Other clubs throughout the then-territory were invited to attend the First Convention, held at the Princess Ka'iulani Hotel on April 18, Mr. William H. Heen was the guest speaker, and there were 83 delegates who were assigned to the following Committees: Legislation (Rep. Joe Leong worked on this Committee), Organization & Objectives (here we find Father Kekumano), Registration & Credentials (Lurline Lee worked here), Resolutions (lots of familiar names here, but none still active), and Rules of the Convention (again, lots of familiar names, but none still tackling the rules). Clubs from the neighbor islands attending this meeting were 1 from Kaua'i (Kapa'a), 2 from Maui (Lahaina and Kahului). 1 from Moloka'i (Ho'olehua), and 4 from Hawai'i (Hamakua, Hilo, Kona, and Waimea). The original Executive Committee consisted of David Bent, William Kea, William I. Kanakanui, Jay Landis, Gulstan Poepoe, George Richardson, and Gabriel Weisbarth. The first Convention involving the Clubs throughout the state was held on Maui at Baldwin High School in Harry Field was president. Since that time the Association has witnessed a growth of 21 clubs on O'ahu, 9 on Hawai'i, 5 in Maui County and 4 on Kaua'i, as well as 4 on the mainland. We have established a reputation of serious consideration of current, community problems, as well as addressing the concerns of our members wherever possible. We are looked upon as a valuable resouce by many facets of the community, as well as the legislature. Prince Kuhio would have been proud to witness our growth and the sincere interest of the clubs and their members in their community, their children and their unique culture. 9 0'ahu Council Report Aloha, compiled here for your information, is a snapshot of council activity in The Council requested a bill in the legislature for the state to apoint a special Attorney General to defend OHA and Hawaiian Homes in the suit filed by Barrett and Carroll. With three days to deadline, Representative Bertha Kawakami and Senator Colleen Hanabusa introduced identical bills for the council and although heard, the bills were not adopted. After much discussion, the Council held Ho'ike'ike at the Kapiolani Bandstand for the first time. The committee, co- chaired by Ruth Holt and Shelley Hao-Tamon, had only eight weeks to prepare and it was a resounding success. Mahalo Queen Emma HCC for sponsoring a second day. The Council is committed to be there on March 23-24, 2002 to celebrate Prince Kuhio. Our new standing committee, to monitor, support and advocate for historic preservation has been extremely busy on several fronts including central, leeward and windward Oahu. The Council's monthly care and maintenance of Mauna Ala continues. A special meeting called to hear a presentation by Jon Van Dyke, Esq. on the, "Akaka" bill and the lawsuits that threaten Hawaiian entitlements and dismantle Hawaiian agencies and trusts, resulted in overwhelming agreementto: 1) support the initiative for federal recognition now before the Congress; 2) support an initiative for the quasi sovereign status needed for federal recognition. The president of the Hawaiian Civic Club of 'Ewa and the Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club announced their intent to merge as a brand new club, the Ewa-Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club, and received strong support from the Council. They further requested that their delegates be seated as a new club at the 2001 convention. With great regret the Council agreed to request the dissolution of the Queen Kapiolani HCC by the Association due to prolonged lack of participation in any civic club activity. Attempts to revive the club for several years were futile. The Council held its first ever, constitutional convention, for four days at the Center for Hawaiian Studies and prepared for the Association con con. Ratification of the constitution and bylaws was at the Council's Fall meeting. Members volunteered to represent the Council on the Halawa Luluku Interpretive Development project after HLID staff presentation at the Council meeting. Clubs volunteered to convene three focus groups for a special Colorectal Cancer Project in collaboration with Dr. Momi Kaanoi of the UH Medical School. Convention committee unveils beautiful array of merchandise with 2001 logo. Council sets its sights on immediate concerns of convention, Federal recognition, Hawaiian rights and entitlements, and the future need to continue functioning effectively during this period of global uncertainty. 10 Hawai'i Council Report 1,Welina, Ano'ai and Aloha! President Charles Rose, members of the Board of Directors of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, Honored guests, delegates, alternates and members. I am pleased to report on the activities of the Hawaii Council. After reviewing all of the club reports submitted to me it is apparent that our clubs are dedicated to their communities and are continuing to carry out the objectives of the Association. From fundraisers for scholarships, to cultural events, educational activities, partication in community events, we continue to make a difference to better conditions for our members and families in this place we call home. Have you ever witnessed the rising sun as it breaks into view at the drawing of a new day? On a brisk Saturday morning we stood shivering in the cold wind at Uwe Kahuna awaiting the rising sun. The bright yellow and orange rays were spectacular. the sun finally broke through we chanted "E Ala E". Kealoha Sugiyama of Kohala chanted and offered a hookupu on our behalf. The Council members and I, followed in a procession.. We were excercising the first of what we hoped would become part of our theme of cultural rejuvenation for Hawaii Council. If you will recall, Larry Kimura held an in depth workshop on the Hawaiian College at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. We also sponsored Resolution for the College. This resolution was passed out of the Association Education Committee and adopted by the house of delegates at convention. HB 159 'passed the State Legislature as a restrictive provision in Act 315 which enables the formation of college. Act 226 allowed the University of Hawaii at Hilo greater flexibility in using general funds to support the Hawaiian Language College. This is the first step in fulfilling the mandate for the College. Mahalo for your support. Busy members were part of a planning team at the Annual Na Pua Noeau Family Affair. Thiswas a well attended community event at the University Campus with music, food, and displays. We had a display with handouts, identifying who we are as an organization. Dr. Clayton Chong was a keynote speaker at last years convention. He said "I am a oncologist, which is a doctor that specilizes in cancer". His statistics were not lost on us. As a results our clubs were actively involued in cancer education and fund raisers such as the Moonlight Madness/Relay for Life. The activitives featured fun and games, food and walking relays. The highlight of the event was a candle lighting ceremony honoring those who passed on and especially for the survivors of cancer. Laupahoehoe has been a vital part of the Hamakua Coast Community. They have assisted with the preservation of the Laupahoehoe Train Museum, as well as other projects. They also attended a food handlers workshop. We can attest to their proficiency in the kitchen and as caterers. The inimitable Walter Victor chaired every golf tournament we have sponsored that has kept our treasury solvent. The golfing community in Hilo looks foward to our tournament as one of the best. North Kohala Hawaiian Civic Club, Kohala Kamehameha Celebration Committe and the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education sponsored a two day rededication of the restored statue in Kapa'au Kohala. We were there on behalf of our President. The ceremory was impressive, the restoration effort is a testament to good research and dedication to authenticity on the part of the individuals involued.

Hawaii Council Report continued: research and dedication to authenticity on the part of the individuals involved. Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club provides "hands-on" cultural workshops in conjunction with the annual Pu'u Kohala Heiau Cultural Festival in cooperation with the Dept. of Interior National Park Service, friends of the park and other organizations. Kohala Hawaiian Civic Club has gone through a year of reorganization and is filing papers to become a 501 (c) (3). This club has been busy forming coalitions with other Kohala based organizations urging the retention and preservation of the North Kohala District. As you can see our clubs have formed coalitons with other community groups on projects and activities to benefit the larger community. Mahalo Ann K Nathaniel Mainland Council Report 'Ano 'ai kakou! The world as we once knew was changed forever on September 11. On behalf of the Mainland Council, we would like to express our most heartfelt sympathy to those individuals and na 'ohana who were directly touched by the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Pennsylvania tragedies. Our thoughts and prayers are not only with those who have suffered loss, but also with our country as it summons the abiding strength of spirit that is our national pride. The economic impact of this tragedy upon the lives of many of us is devastating, and we have not seen the end of it. But we must be strong, and vigilant. I was inspired by the words of President Bush, who courageously advised us all to return to normal life, while never forgetting what has happened. Please know we fully recognize the challenges and inconveniences that are in our future. I am proud and honored that the Association has reconfirmed its commitment to hold our convention this year. I think having done so we will be stronger, in mind and spirit as we gather together in our effort to share this moment in our history. 12 Maui Council Report The Maui District Council is composed of only two clubs, the Central Maui Hawaiian Civic Club and the Ho'olehua Hawaiian Civic Club. Because of the seas of Pailolo it is difficult to collaborate in district activities. Having said that, the work of the District Council has been to try to increase the number of clubs in the district. We have been working hard to restart the Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club; there has been some glimmer of interest. During this past year there were two Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club meetings. But, the disease of apathy infected the rebirth of this club. We will continue to look for members in the Lahaina area. My thanks to the Association and Trustee Henry Peters for the overtures of support that they made this year to restart the Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club. As these people understand the cultural significance of Lahaina, we do too. We know how important it is for the Association to have an eye in this community to protect the many culturally significant sites in the area. The same challenges are being seen on the island of Lana' i. We have held two community meetings and the meetings were well attended. Like other Hawaiian communities everybody is busy doing thing likes canoe paddling, malama 'aina, education, etc. The challenge is to convince the community that the Civic Club is a wonderful way to deliver all these services to the Hawaiian Community. Our challenge is big but we are up to this challenge. Lui Hokoana

Since its inception 53 years ago the Hawaiian Civic Club of 'Ewa had three Presidents. They were Thomas Akui, George Richardson, and yours truly. We took our responsibilities seriously and tried to fulfill our many commitments with the O'ahu Council and the Association as best we could. Once a very BIG club, we have unfortunately dwindled to a small membership. This year our greatest challenge was to find a place of comfort and acceptance. A place by where we would not be forgotten. As our members decided to dissolve, while another thought about merging. What a wonderful feeling when parents can rely on their off-spring. The Hawaiian Civic Club of 'Ewa sponsored the Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club into the Association 37 years ago. As beneficiaries of the legacies of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole and many ali'i before him, members of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu participated in community activities, raised funds - for education, enjoyed cultural activities, and worked toward developing leadership among our membership and families. Members attend Ali'i Sunday regularly at Kawaiaha'o Church in tribute to our beloved ali'i. After convention 2000, HCCH member partici-

pated in a cultural retreat to Puna and Ka'O on Hawai'i island enjoying hiking, gathering, lei-making, storytelling and sight-seeing to many wahi pana. In December, the club rounded out its busy year with a membership meeting and holiday pa'ina at the home of T.B. Lyons. An installation 'aha'aina was held for members, directors and officers in January at the Kaa'awa home of Tomi and Noa Chong. H6'ike'ike at Kapi'olani Park was an excellent opportunity for HCCH to provide to association members and the general public scholarship information, and background on such club activities as the HolokO Ball. In addition, members participated in lei making, and Aunty Freda Gomes demonstrated hula instrument making. The club invited the Hawai'i Kidney Foundation to do health screening, which hundreds took advantage of. HolokO Ball 2001 in May drew more than 400 to the annual scholarship fundraiser which enabled the club to award more than $37,000 for post-high education. For the club's general operating fund, HCCH runs food booths and sells t-shirts at such events as Bishop Museum Family Sunday, and the Middle Schools Credit Union's annual talent contest. In May, HCCH participated in the O'ahu Council's constitutional convention, revisiting and revising the guiding documents of the council. Members attended a number of events sponsored by other clubs, including Prince KOhi6 Hawaiian Civic Club's scholarship luncheon at which four outstanding Hawaiian leaders were recognized. Members of HCCH's choral group, "Kaiolohiaomamala," worked throughout the year planning 'Aha Mele 2001, the annual Hawaiian choral singing event at convention. As event coordinators for this year's convention, our primary goal was to increase participation in the event. KAILUA HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB P.O. Na'i Doo, Vema Santos, Nalani Wallace Ho'opa'a Mo'olelo Nalani Waillace It was a busy year, indeed. Ulupo Heiau was a busy place all year long. We cleaned the Heiau and grounds every month with the help of the Pa Kui A Holo "Martial Arts/LUA group under the leadership of Thomas Kaulukukui Jr., they also cut down large trees and even hauled the rubbish away. We are extremely grateful for this. The Oahu Council's Ho'ike'ike in March was a great experience for our new members; we experienced an overnite fun and sharing with our keiki. Serving lunches is one our of specialties, especially when we have good cooks and good help. We served at the Association ofhawaiian Civic Club's Board meeting and the Oahu Council"s meeting with the help of Windward Oahu Hawaiian Civic Clubs. Some of our monthly meetings have been interesting. One time, member Manu Bird brought native plants, spoke about each and gave them out to whom were interested. Another time, member Dr. Palmer, Biologist, an artist, sketching local plants, brought them to the meetings and shared them for our auction. Another speaker Susan Miller from KaWainui Foundation, spoke of the marsh and the future bird santuary in Kailua. Our own member Chuck Burrows spoke of the Ahupua'a. In May, we were honored to have speaking at Ulupo Heiau, John Keola Lake, and Na Wa' a Lani shared chants. Muriel Seto spoke of the early days in Kailua. It was also during Hawaii's Archaeology week member Martha Yent shared posters for this event at Ulupo Heiau. At this event, the men of Pa Ku'i A Holo assisted with protocol and stood guard during the program. Member Kawao Durante greeted at least 100 plus guests. Some of our members attended the Council meeting where Jon VanDyke addressed Issues of Hawaiian Rights and Entitlements. We are proud to announce the Lani-Kailua Business & Professional Women's Club & Ameron (Co Curators) of Pahukini Heiau turned over the Heiau to the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club. We will be having a special blessing ceremony in the near future. Pahukini Heiau is one of five Heiau in the Kailua and Kane'ohe area, built by O'ahu Chief 'Olopana probably in the 1300's or 1400's. Its large size suggests a Luakini Heiau where ceremonies included rituals for success in war. The name Pahukini may mean "many drums" and refer to the beating of the pahu ( drum) that signaled the God's presence at the Heiau.

In September, we will be gathering at Ulupo Heiau to plant red Hala trees in honor of our late member Nappy Durante who we miss very much. KALIHI-PALAMA HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB 21 S. WaIter Rodenhurst, Gladys Rodenhurst, Leimomi Caswell, Marie Brunn, John Awana Since our last convention in Hilo, King Kamehameha Hawaiian Civic Club has been very busy supporting sister clubs and council projects. The year began with a heavy challenge to get our annual ho'ike'ike off the ground. It was held in the Waikikl district at Kapi'olani Park. King Kamehameha, was involved in taking leadership roles and helped co-chair the event which was highly commended for being very successful. We continue to support the cleaning of Mauna'ala, the resting place of our kupuna for the 7th year. Representatives from our club attended the HCC of Honolulu holoku ball, Nanaikapono HCC scholarship luncheon, Waialua HCC scholarship dinner, Prince KOhi6 HCC "Ka Lani Ana 'Ole" tribute at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and was unanimously supportive of a friendly merger of the new 'Ewa-Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic. The O'ahu Council's con-con workshop was another council activity that we were proud to have been a part. The process was lengthy however, educational. Council board, general membership, and numerous committee meetings have kept King Kamehameha busy. From the Akaka Bill to convention committee meetings, from colorectal cancer workshop to Alii Sunday services, and from attending installations of elected officers from other clubs to recruiting new members have all been overwhelming. Yet we are proud to continue the mission and vision of our beloved Ali'i Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. Five Scholarship Awards were granted this year. Planning the future of Kaliuwa' a (Sacred Falls State Park) continues to be the project of greatest importance. We serve on the Sacred Falls State Park advisory committee which meets monthly with planners from Department of Land and Natural Resources, Parks Division. Our responsibility is to preserve and protect this historic site and to assure the plans are culturally sensitive. Our proposed program to preserve the mo' olelo of Kaluanui and Kaliuwa' a was begun in August with a generous grant from Ho'opono Ko'olauloa Community Foundation. 25 In cooperation with Milton Lau's Ka Hoku Productions, we participated in the 19th annual Ki Hoalu Festival at Kapi'olani Park, and were responsible for coordinating food booths. The club has been involved with this festival from its inception and continue to provide scholarships to individuals who have expressed interest in learning and perpetuating this performing art. Recently, we adopted Hakipu'u Learning Center, a new Hawaii Charter School, as an ongoing scholarship recipient. We have decided to make the entire student body, recipients of our scholarship funds. Throughout the year, the club will provide Hakipu'u Learning Center for their various needs from their wish list. This way we feel we are reaching more than a few individuals and making our limited dollars work for the benefit of more Hawaiian children. We are partners with the Windward Community College, in participating as members of committees responsible for establishing curriculum of the Hawaiian Studies program and Hawaii Music Institute. Also, we have been a part of the planning as co-sponsors for the Kupono Hawaiian Club's Scholarship Luau-which will bean annual event. A Makahiki Festival for 2002, has been established at Windward Community Collegeand our club will serve as a co-sponsor with responsibility of coordinating the entire project. Currently, we are involved in working with the community, on the Wastewater Systems Project for Kualoa Regional Park. We are advocating for an above ground wastewater system, so as not to disturb our 'Iwi Kupuna. While this has been an ongoing battle with the bureaucrats of the City and County of Honolulu, it has also been a learning experience for many of our club members. We continue to provide testimony supporting an above ground system, meeting with directors of Design-Construction and Parks and Recreation, to work with our community through this challenging, and sometimes, hurtful experience. Our goal is to become stronger during these trying times and economic disaster, by helping our families where needed, and strengthening our bond of love and aloha for each other. 33 Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club continues to be a very active and highly respected club in the OCHCC and AHCC. We currently have 206 paid members. We hold meetings twice a month; a Board of Director's and General Membership Meeting. General membership meetings are well attended with 30 to 65 members/guests in attendance. Our newsletter keeps the membership informed of activities and events in the club, District Council, Association and the community. We attend all O'ahu Council meetings, and played an active part in the Council Con-Con held this year, with an attendance of 10 delegates. Also, we attended every Association Board Meeting. Elections are held every year and young adults are encouraged to run for office. Our club is a BUSY one, and very active in the community. We are active with the American Cancer Society Christmas Wrapping Event, Relay for Life, and the Kole Kole Pass Half-Marathon. Each year, we enjoy participating and manning the first water station for the Great Aloha Fun Run. Members assisted with ushering, at the Kamehameha Schools Song Contest and the Graduation. The club also assisted in the King Kamehameha Celebration Hula Competition by lining up the halaus in chronological order, selling programs, and sweeping the floors between each hula set. Members volunteer for Aloha Festivals by ushering for their investiture, and selling ribbons and merchandise. We assisted the Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus and Kawaiahao Church in hosting their concerts at Kawai'ahao Church. We have a minimum of 4 members participating in our small functions to 55 members at our larger functions. Lunalilo Home has always been dear to us and we raised $2,200 to adopt the Administration Office of their newly renovated facility. We presented the check to Greg Meyer from Lunalilo Home at our Installation Luncheon in January. At Thanksgiving, we gave food baskets to fifteen families listed with Lili'uokalani Trust, 10 more than last year. At Christmas we gave nine families dinners, and one food basket, 4 more than last year. This year we demonstrated our cultural skills for six conventions. Conventioneers totaled approximately 10,000 visitors. We fulfilled our goals and objectives of perpetuating our culture by participating in the following events: The Panasonic Top Gun Convention from Australia, National Life Convention, American Supply Machine Manufacturing Association, Independent Distributor Association, 3M Industrial Co., Farm Mortgage Corp., and the GMAC Convention. The following crafts were demonstrated: quilting, feather lei making, fresh flower lei making, coconut leaf weaving, ti leaf skirts, leis and slippers, poi pounding, shell jewelry, seed crafts, lauhala, Hawaiian instruments, tapa and hula. Our membership has opportunity to learn these crafts and they can share their talents and feel positive about themselves and their culture. All Ali'i Sunday services at Kawaiahao Church were attended by a minimum of four to sixteen members. Pearl Harbor hosts the Sunday commemorating Lili'uokalani by decorating Kawaiahao Church and donating the Leis of Aloha. We held a service, and decorated her statue at the Capitol, with leis of purple crown flowers. Also, we attended the Queen's Reception at Washington Place. Pearl Harbor HCC has an on going training program for leadership. We encourage members to take leadership roles so we may have different chairmen for all events. Our membership is becoming ma'a to this and don't feel hilahila in volunteering. We work hard to help each other so all events will be successful. We earn money for our Scholarship Fund, throughout the year. This year we were able to give out 13 Scholarships to members and their families. We donated $350 to the Dr. George Hi'ilani Mills Scholarship Fund and $350 to the Dorothy Kahananui Gillett Scholarship Fund. These scholarships are managed by Kamehameha Schools. As directed by our Constitution to create a forum for our membership, throughout the year presentations were made at our General Membership Meetings. Candidates for the OHA Elections came to speak. A member from Hawaiian Home Lands spoke to the membership about the "Akaka Bill S. 2899". Another speaker came to speak on "Your Advance Directive for Future Health Care". We enjoyed Dr. Kaonohi, who spoke to our Club on Prostate and Colorectal Cancer. Our Club also hosted a workshop for Men 50 years of age and older. We are happy to announce an increase in membership this year. We will be attending this Convention with 21 delegates and 3 At-Large Delegates for a total of 24 Delegates. Pearl Harbor continues to strive to do better each year, and live up to the goals and objectives of our Club and those of our founder Prince Kuhio. Key to this effort was formal planning meetings to set the year's calendar of events, budgets, and fundraising activities at the beginning of the year. A new, 8-page monthly newsletter kept members informed of the dub's activities and progress in meeting these objectives, as well as featuring articles on current Native Hawaiian issues and items of cultural interest. Monthly club dinner meetings, often with guest speakers, are held at the Queen Emma Summer Palace halau. Lurline McGregor of the 'Olelo Corporation, Jim Bartels of Washington Place, and Rob Saracco of Merrill Lynch, have enlivened dinners. The presentation by Professor Jon Van Dyke on Implications of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Rice v Cayetano prompted a special meeting and action by the O'ahu Council. The highlight of this year, was Na ho'okupu no Kalani Ana Ole" - a tribute luncheon to Irmgard Farden Aluli, Gladys Ainoa Brandt, David Merritt Peters, and Myron "Pinky" Thompson. Held at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a sell-out crowd of more than 400 guests honored these outstanding members of our club and the community in scholarship fundraising event. 'Olelo Community Television also filmed and aired segments of the event. Keeping its commitment of more than thirty-five years, the Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club this year awarded :P19,500 in scholarships to twenty deserving Hawaiian scholars and also donated $2,000 to the four O'ahu-based Punana Leo schools. In addition to the luncheon, scholarship funds are sustained by dividends earned on an investment portfolio, annual moon calendar sales, and various other fundraising activities. An ongoing review of the club's investment policy is now being conducted with advisers from Merrill Lynch and should be completed by the end of the year. The club's Constitution was also reviewed and amended, and members were also active at the O'ahu Council's Constitutional Convention. The Choral Group distinguished itself in perf 0 r mances at the dedication of the restored Waikiki Natatorium Memorial, the Hale'iwa Church, and Kuhio Day events at the namesake federal building. Choral members were also prominent in Kuhio Elementary School celebrations, and the club provided a donation for supplies. We, the members of Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club are proud as we move forward toward the charter of a new club named EWA-PU'ULOA HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB at this 42nd annual convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs. Officers and members ofthe Hawaiian Civic Club of Ewa and the Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club have carefully chosen to preserve the history of the Ewa Club, eslablished in 1948, and the identity of Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club it sponsored in We seek this action as a means to continue a proud tradition, rather than allow a slow deterioration and eventual adverse action of charter removal. We respect this achievement and move forward with the protocol's operation and implementation as we gather here at this convention. We have done this through precaution and not recklessness, through responsibilities and not selfinterest; through leadership and not obstructionism. Our responsibility is not to fail but to act with courage and fortitude. We acknowledge that this is at a most critical moment of which many issues for the Hawaiians remains and must be resolved. A steadfast "Onipaa" hold on old and known positions alone will not help. For Our part we are resolved to do what we can to bring together divergent viewpoints and to consolidate texts toward the future. We thank the officers and members of Waikiki Hawaiian Civic Club for sponsoring us. We thank both- O'ahu Council and the Association ofhawaiian Civic Clubs and the leadership provided, not only for Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club, but for the movement as a whole. We call for a matching quality of leadership from other groups. We strongly believe that finalizing this arrangement of the unity of small clubs is a change for the immediate future and beyond. Since our participation at the last convention, we have supported the scholarships and installation of officers of fellow Civic Clubs. We joined with Pearl Harbor HCC by singing at the service in honor of Queen Lili'uokalanai at the Capitol. We have attended all AIi'i Sundays at Kawaiahao Church. We have attended all meetings of the O'ahu Council and the Association. We've participated in the O'ahu Council Con - Con Workshops, the O'ahu Council Ho'ike'ike/Prince Kuhio Celebration, the 'Aha 'Opio OOHA. We learned more about the Carroll/Barrett Case from Professor Van Dyke and the "Akaka" Bill at the State Capitol. We have done our yearly cleaning at Mauna'ala. We are now servicing you all at the INFORMATION BOOTH at this convention. There were cultural exhibits, hands on demonstrations, and community groups that offered informational programs on education, health, and history. Many of the Hawaiian Civic Clubs that participated provided food, crafts, and genuine support of one another, which made this a very successful event. This year members of Queen Emma have concentrated on various community activities, and projects. They have supported, and participated with the Oahu Council in various community awareness projects, as well in the First Constitutional and by-laws convention for the Oahu Council. Displayed cultural crafts and designs at the airport. After convention in Hilo members worked hard to raise monies for Scholarship/and General Funds. They have the energies to go forth and become assets to our community, and with the knowledge that Queen Emma members have faith in them to succeed in what ever challenges they face in the future. Most of our younger members late 20s, 30s or 40s either have two jobs while raising their children, with little time to participate in club activities except when time permits on special occasions. However they are very supportive ( either financially or with ticket sales.) when the club sponsors fundraising events. Ida Lei was the daughter of past members the late E C Hobron Van Gieson and Kumulani Van Gieson. She was also the sister of current members. The first was a collaborative effort with the Native Hawaiian Education Island Council MauilLana'i, and Maui Community College. The event was called Scholarship 'Aha The 'Aha invited Native Hawaiian Scholarship grantees to present information about their different scholarship programs. Presenting that evening were representatives from Kamehameha Schools, Native Hawaiian Leadership program, Alu Like Inc., Hawaii Community Foundation, Educational Opportunity Center, MCC Financial Aid Office, and the Gates Millennium Scholarship. The presenters explained their scholarship criteria, their respective timeline and deadline, and the amount of funding available each year. The event was a huge success. Close to 400 people attended this Scholarship 'Aha; in the audience were kupuna, makua, and keiki from all over Maui. Everybody enjoyed the good music, ono food, and the valuable information provided by the presenters. Next year we hope to expand the event to people on Lana' i. The second new initiative the club has been working on is the reinvigoration of its membership. One of the strategies was to hold less business meetings and more educational/informational workshops. This year the club hosted information sessions about Kamehameha schools expansion on Maui; Keanu Sai spoke about litigation at the World Court for Hawaiians; and arts and crafts of Hawaii.

Next year we will move to quarterly business meetings and monthly educational/informational meetings. Another activity was holding a dinner. The dinner was a wonderful opportunity to meet with the recipients and to hear, first hand, how their education would benefit the Native Hawaiian Community. This year the Central Maui Hawaiian Civic Club gave out $10,000 in scholarship money to 12 recipients. That's it from Maui; on behalf of our members we would like to thank the O'ahu Council for hosting this year's convention. HO'OLEHUA HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB P.O. After devoting much time and energy to creating a club infrastructure over the past few years, we are finally able to direct our attention toward specific programs, community outreach and fundraising. This year, our membership grew to over 58 people. With more members, we have been able to get more involved with the community. Our weekly raffle contributions have gone to local charities such as the Native American School and the Salvation Army. Other proceeds have gone to the establishment of a scholarship fund for students who are active in the community. This summer, we gave our first public educational program at a local library. The program was for children, and included hula, lei making and a talk on whales. Our monthly general meetings have covered a wide variety of topics. Craft workshops were given throughout the year. The workshops were on crafts for fundraising and traditional Hawaiiana. We hope to sell these at the upcoming holiday craft fairs in Colorado. For our traditional Hawaiian crafts, we had workshops for flower lei making, seed lei, and Hawaiian quilts. This year we also purchased a shave ice machine and sold en 0 ugh at several summer festivals to pay for our investment and make a modest profit. Special activites this summer included our first annual Spa Day trip to Glenwood Springs and our first annual Founder's Day Picnic. As the calender year draws to close, we look forward to our first 'Ohana Retreat in October, our second annual Haunted Hawai'i Talk Story (ghost stories) for Halloween, the launching of our 'olelo program and the development of our club website.
