4 WELCOME TO DISCOVER NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION 2012 Dear Students and Guests: We are excited to have you join us at Phase II Discover Orientation. Our goal is to welcome you to Central Washington University s campus community, make your stay comfortable, and assist you in your transition to college life. Student success is our number one goal. Your Discover Orientation leader is your personal host during your visit. Your leader can assist you with information regarding sessions, your accommodations, and other needs you may have. Many faculty and staff are also available to assist you. We look forward to serving you and making your visit informative and enjoyable. For the comfort of all of our guests, please note our Discover Orientation policies: 1. Discover Orientation is a substance-free program for parents and students. Alcohol and drug possession or use anytime during your visit will not be tolerated. If students are in violation of this policy, they will meet with CWU conduct officers to determine their fall quarter registration status. 2. Quiet hours in the residence halls begin at 10:00 p.m. Please be courteous to your neighbors. Remember, you have an early morning on day two, so make sure to get some rest. 3. 6 SESSION DESCRIPTIONS Listed by chronological order of schedule Wildcat Shop Tours You won t want to miss this tour. We will show you how to save money on textbooks, how to find your course materials, and explain all the services the store offers. In addition, you will receive a free CWU flash drive. You will also be entered in a drawing to win free textbooks for fall quarter. This will be the most important money-saving session you attend at Discover Orientation and also the shortest one at 10 minutes. Connection Card Time to say cheese and come on in to get your Connection Card! This card serves as your general school identification card. It also contains your meal plan and will grant you access to CWU sporting events, the library, computer labs, and the SURC workout facility. You also have an option to choose the Maxx card, which is a combination of your CWU Connection Card and U.S. Bank debit card. The Maxx card is a great option for CWU students, as U.S. Bank is the only full-service bank on campus. Come in to watch a short, informational slideshow, choose your card, and get your picture taken. You can also sign your Recreation Center release form and turn it in to get a free lanyard. Recreation Center Open Hours (Volleyball and Climbing) Want your energy back after a great meal come checkout the Climbing Wall or hit the Volleyball court! All Discover Students and guests are invited to try out our award winning Recreation Center, come explore the opportunities. Signed WAIVERS are required for anyone using the facility. Student Employment Authorization: Drop In The student employment staff is here to help you find a job and complete the pre-employment paperwork for on-campus employment. If you have appropriate original documents (such as a passport or driver s license and social security card) you can receive pre-approval to work on campus. This will make your job search in the fall easier and faster. Please visit us at the Student Services Fair or in our office (Bouillon 205) on Day 2. We look forward to meeting you. Campus Tours You have not seen the campus until you have seen it with one of our trained campus tour guides. They will show you the well-traveled spots on campus and relay fun facts and stories about Central The Burg Radio Station Tours Cutting edge, state-of-the art broadcast studios, along with today s modern rock, hip-hop, top 40, hot country, and alternative favorites it s Your Music Central, 88.1 FM The Burg by and for the students of CWU. Come tour the station in SURC Room 120 and find out what it takes to get involved. Listen online at Parent Information Session Representatives from across campus will be available to talk with you on any topic that is on your mind. It is a great opportunity to get those last questions answered at Discover Orientation comes close. 4

7 Specialized Advising Sessions Students planning on majors with the College of Business or College of Education must attend one of these required sessions as part of their admissions into the major. Students who will not have a transferable associate s degree must attend the non-aa degree session to learn about CWU s general education program. CWU Student Services Fair Learn more about various campus offices and organizations. Find out about services available and opportunities for involvement. More than 20 campus offices and organizations will be represented. Use the BINGO card to play our student services game. Non-traditional Students Welcome Non-traditional students are those who are 25 years or older, married or with a domestic partner, or have children (married or single), or a veteran of any age. This session is aimed at welcoming these students to campus to learn more about resources and ways to get involved. Those students who identify as non-traditional are welcome to attend. Veterans Center The Central Washington University Veteran s Center is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment that fully engages all university veteran students and their families. This session will cover essential programs and services (GI Bill and Transfer of Benefits) that will help promote veterans intellectual, cultural, emotional and physical well-being as they transform themselves to achieve educational and career goals in and out of the classroom. Academic Advising & Registration Information This session cannot be missed. You will get the inside scoop on what classes are available for fall quarter, graduation requirements, the online catalog, how to use SAFARI to find all of your transfer information, how to look up classes, and how to register for classes. Financial Aid This session is designed for students and parents who have begun the financial aid process. Topics include student loan borrowing, navigating the SAFARI online system, budgeting your money, staying in good standing for financial aid, financial aid disbursement, contacting financial aid officers, and tips on applying next year. Being a CWU Student-Athlete This session will provide information on how to become a participant in one of our 13 intercollegiate sport programs. Information will cover the NCAA Eligibility Center, insurance, athletic goals and objectives, contact information, and a Q & A session. This session is required for anyone planning to participate in varsity athletics at Central. Center for Disability Services (CDS) Intake Meeting Are you (or your parents) worried about how a disability will affect your academic success at CWU? Students with documented disabilities and their parents will receive detailed, individualized information about academic accommodations and other support services at the Center for Disability Services (CDS) Intake Meetings held during Discover Orientation. NOTE: Must be preregistered to attend. Only those students who submitted documentation and registered to attend CDS Intake in advance of their orientation dates are eligible to participate. Students who did not submit documentation or register in advance should make arrangements to attend the final pre-fall CDS Intake Meeting in September Contact CDS for more information at 509/ or CDS@cwu.edu. 8 IMPORTANT ABBREVIATIONS AND TERMS FERPA Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. This will be discussed in more detail during Discover Orientation. Students must sign a Release of Information form (included in your student packet) and sign in the presence of a CWU employee in order for students records to be released to parents or others that they designate. SAFARI SAFARI is the on-line portal and primary system-of-record for student information at Central Washington University. SAFARI includes admissions, financial aid, student records, academic progress, and student financial functions. Other auxiliary systems pass transactions to SAFARI to maintain accurate student records. SAFARI is the primary source of information for students and faculty, including class schedules, registration, grades, and financial need. SURC Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) is the primary location of Discover New Student Orientation.
