SLC Tournament Champion ^ NCAA Tournament Participant * - SLC Tournament Participant A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI FALLS TO BOISE STATE IN NCAA REGIONALS A&M-Corpus Christi s Men s Tennis Team fell 4-1 to No. 23 Boise State in opening round of the NCAA Men s Tennis Tournament. The Islanders found themselves in a hole early after dropping the doubles point. The Islanders kept the point close as Raul Morant-Rivas and Mikhail Pavlov evened up the doubles competition 1-1 with an 8-6 win over Kean Feeder and Eric Roberson at the No. 2 position. At the No. 1 position, Andrey Kumantsov and Dmitry Novikov fell behind 4-1 before winning the next two games over Luke and Clancy Shields, before Boise State won the match 8-6 to win the doubles point. The Islanders fell behind in each of the six singles spots early, losing the first set in all but one position. Pavlov cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Dilaj at the No. 4 position to tie the match at one point each. At the No. 6 spot, Jaume Farras evened his match at two games each in the first set before falling 6-3 in the first, before falling 6-1 in the second set. At the No. 3 position, Morant-Rivas played from behind the entire match and eventually fell to Clancy Shields 6-3, 6-2 just before Feeder defeated Novikov 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the match. A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI S ANDREY KUMANTSOV QUALIFIES FOR THE NCAA MEN S TENNIS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP Andrey Kumantsov, the lone senior on A&M- Corpus Christi s men s tennis team, qualified for the NCAA Men s Tennis Singles Championship in Athens, Ga., but did not compete. Kumantsov, ranked No. 31 in the country, received an at-large bid as the top 64 players in the country compete for a national title. Kumantsov, the 2007 SLC Player of the Year went 14-2 in singles action this season, helping the Islanders to a 15-6 overall record and NCAA Tournament berth. Last year, teammate Raul Morant-Rivas was the only Southland Conference men s tennis player to compete in the 2006 NCAA Singles and Doubles portion of the championship. The 2005 and 2006 SLC Player of the Year lost to 25th-ranked KC Corkney of No. 13 Stanford, 3-6, 6-3, 5-7. 3 2007 Southland Conference Men s Tennis ISLANDER KUMANTSOV NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR For the third-straight year, the men s tennis Player of the Year winner comes from A&M-Corpus Christi, as Andrey Kumantsov was voted for the honor. He follows Raul Morant-Rivas, who won the award back-to-back in 2005 and Kumantsov went 5-1 at No. 1 singles this season. UTSA S MORGADO NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR For the second-straight year, UTSA has the SLC Freshman of the Year, as Rodrigo Morgado wins the honor this season, following Andre Moreira in Morgado is the third Roadrunner to win the honor, joining Jonas Hoglund in Morgado went 6-0 at No. 2 singles this year. UTA S MINKIN NAMED NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR Texas-Arlington s Dmitry Minkin, who went 15-3 overall this season, was named Newcomer of the Year, becoming the third Maverick to win the honor, joining Nathan McGregor in 2004 and Javier Carrillo in MOORE NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR Texas A&M-Corpus Christ Head Coach Steve Moore was named SLC Coach of the Year. Moore guided the Islanders to a 13-5 record this season and a perfect 6-0 record in league play. Moore is the second Islander coach to win the honor, joining Steve Denton who won back-to-back honors in 2004 and MOORE NAMED DIRECTOR OF TENNIS AT A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Director of Athletics Brian Teter announced the promotion of men s tennis coach Steve Moore to Director of Tennis and will now oversee both the men s and women s programs. Moore finished up the 2007 season as the men s head coach, where he led the Islanders to a 15-6 and a Southland Conference championship as well as being named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year. He will also take over the women s program for Ken DeKoning, who retired at the end of the 2007 season. Moore started the men s program in 1998 where he coached for three years, where he led the Islanders to a and was one of the youngest NCAA Division I head coaches in the country at the time at the age of 26. The Corpus Christi native left his hometown to serve as a volunteer assistant at SMU in 2001 for the men s team during its NCAA Tournament run. He was then named the head women s coach at SMU later that summer. He served as head coach for two seasons, leading the Mustangs to a record. During his first season as head coach, the team tallied its most wins in 14 years. ISLANDERS WIN 2007 SLC MEN S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP A&M-Corpus Christi won its third SLC Tournament title in 2007, knocking off UTSA 4-0 in the championship match. The Islanders also won the title in 2004 and The team will now make its second NCAA Tournament appearance and looks for its second win in the event and first since defeating William & Mary 4-2 in 2005 at Charlottesville, Va. UTA COMPETED IN THE 2006 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Texas-Arlington was one of 64 teams invited to the 2006 NCAA Men s Tennis Championships. UTA (13-7) dropped a 4-0 decision to host Texas A&M (16-10) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, on May 12. The Mavericks won the 2006 Southland Conference Tournament title to earn the league s automatic berth. The two-time SLC Player of the Year lost to 25th-ranked KC Corkney of No. 13 Stanford, 3-6, 6-3, 5-7. Morant-Rivas was ranked 67th in the country for the Islanders. Morant-Rivas is Texas A&M-Corpus Christi s first men s player to reach the NCAA Championships in singles. The junior from Barcelona, Spain, finishes the season with an 18-7 record and won 10 of his final 11 matches.
