EMPTY BOWLS EVENT THIS WEEKEND The fifth annual Empty Bowls soup dinner aims to raise awareness of - and money to feed - those who are hungry in our community and will be held on Sunday, Jan. 19, in the Activity Center from 5-7 p.m. Sponsored by the Art Club, the event features a simple meal of bread and soup served in a ceramic bowl for a minimum donation of $15. Providence will celebrate the week in various ways, including with an all-school liturgy and two competitions to help others. 3 Visit River Valley Financial By senior Katie Chrisco After trying for years, Mr. Todd Read finally met his goal of having his school mentioned on "CNN Student News." Two students were instrumental in landing the school's mention during the 'Roll Call' segment. Click to read more. 4 SENIORS RECOGNIZED IN BUSINESS FIRST Two seniors were the latest to be recognized in the First Honors supplement of "Business First" for being among the top students in the class academically and for extracurricular involvement, as nominated by the Providence Guidance Department. This month's honorees are Chase Koetter and Scott Hoyland. Additional seniors will be recognized in future issues. PARENT CONNECTION SUPPORT NEEDED FOR AFTER-PROM The After-Prom Committee is selling peelers with coupons to various local restaurants for $10 each as well as accepting donations for the After- Prom. IHSAA STUDENT/ATHLETIC TIP OF THE WEEK Every Monday, the IHSAA offers a Tip of the Week on its website to encourage students to do their best. Last week, student-athletes were encouraged to follow the rules to keep from jeopardizing their status with the team. This week, players are encouraged to continue playing their best because a comeback is always possible. DARE TO CARE SORTING EVENT Alumni are welcome to join in the annual Alumni vs. Student Sorting Event at Dare to Care Food Bank, 5803 Fern Valley Road, Louisville on Jan. 29 from 5-7:30 p.m. Alumni and students will enjoy pizza and then spend two hours sorting canned goods. BLUE PRIDE ON DISPLAY MATH TEACHERS TRY NEW METHODS The Math Department faculty is enjoying applying teaching methods and tips learned at National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) regional conference in October. Teachers have been implementing ways to transition away from the traditional lecturestudent practice model to more project-based learning as they prepare for the move toward Common Core Standards tentatively scheduled for the school year.
