2 2013 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 All Day CLASS VISITS Families are invited to attend classes throughout the day and experience firsthand the academic programs with your student. Your student should ask his/her professor for permission for you to attend class. 7 & 10 p.m. WEEKEND MOVIE: Monsters University Wallenberg Auditorium, Nobel Hall of Science 8 p.m. TRIVIA NIGHT Heritage Room, Jackson Campus Center Ben and Tom, the Savants of Trivia (made famous through Trivia Nights at Patrick's on 3rd), will be hosting 5 rounds of trivia that include 10 questions each. Winners of each round will receive gift cards to the Gustavus Book Mark and every member of the team with the overall highest score will win a Gustavus blanket! SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12 8 a.m. PANCAKE BREAKFAST Norelius (Coed), Pittman, and Sohre Halls This is a great opportunity to meet the Faculty and Administrators in Residence, Collegiate Fellows, and other students with whom your son/daughter shares a living space. Breakfast is free and hosted by Residential Life in first year halls. 9:30 a.m. WORKSHOPS/PANELS History of Gustavus Heritage Room, Jackson Campus Center Bring your Gustavus family to meet our Gustavus family as we share a brief background of our rich history. This workshop will include an overview of before and after the tornado. PROSPECTIVE GUSTIE IN YOUR FAMILY? Encourage your high school age student to stop by the Admission Office on Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or on Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon during Family Weekend, to receive a FREE Gustavus T-shirt.
3 Planning Ahead for a Semester Abroad Board Room, Jackson Campus Center This session is a great opportunity for parents to begin navigating the study abroad program at Gustavus and to learn about all of the different possibilities. Supporting Your Student Academically St. Peter Room, Jackson Campus Center This session is designed to help you assist your student in their academic transition from high school to college. Members of the academic advising office will provide information and resources that are available. You re on Your Own (But I'm Here if You Need Me) Linner Lounge, Johnson Student Union Parents whose children are away at college have a tough tightrope to walk: they naturally want to stay connected, yet they also have to let go. This session will refer to the book You re on Your Own (But I'm Here if You Need Me) by Marjorie Savage, which will help parents identify the boundaries between necessary involvement and respect for their child s independence. 10:30 a.m. WORKSHOPS/PANELS (repeated) History of Gustavus Heritage Room, Jackson Campus Center Bring your Gustavus family to meet our Gustavus family as we share a brief background of our rich history. This session will refer to the book You re on Your Own (But I'm Here if You Need Me) by Marjorie Savage, which will help parents identify the boundaries between necessary involvement and respect for their child s independence. 10:30 a.m. SEMINAR & TOUR: EXPLORING GUSTAVUS Noon FOR YOURSELF Three Crowns Room, Jackson Campus Center Recognizing that siblings of current Gusties might have different interests and reasons for choosing a college, siblings and their families are invited to this presentation about the College followed by a campus tour. 11:30 a.m. CARNIVAL LUNCH Evelyn Young Dining Room, Jackson Campus Center Lunch available ala carte in the Gustavus Market Place, souvenir photo buttons with Gus the Lion, cotton candy, popcorn, face painting, and live music by the Flood Plain 4. 11:30 a.m. GIANT GAMES 5:30 p.m. Eckman Mall Bring your family and challenge them to a game of Giant Checkers, a new dimension to the game for established checker lovers. Or, build a wooden tower, and then take turns removing a piece and adding it to the top without making the whole tower tumble. 1 p.m. FOOTBALL GAME VS. ST. THOMAS Hollingsworth Field 1 p.m. WOMEN'S SOCCER VS. ST. THOMAS Soccer Fields WEEKEND ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: Weekend Movie - Monsters University, Carnival Lunch, Murder Mystery Dinner, Giant Games, Arboretum Treasure Hunt, Trivia, Football and Soccer games, Music Performances & much more!
5 1 4 p.m. ARBORETUM TREASURE HUNT Linnaeus Arboretum There is gold to be found in the Linnaeus Arboretum. Bring your family members and search for the hidden treasures. Pick up your treasure map in the Arboretum Interpretive Center anytime and go at your own pace! After discovering the gold, trade your treasure in for prizes! 3 p.m. WEEKEND MOVIE: Monsters University Wallenberg Auditorium, Nobel Hall of Science 3:30 p.m. TRIVIA Courtyard Café, Jackson Campus Center Ben and Tom, the Savants of Trivia (made famous through Trivia Nights at Patrick's on 3rd), will be hosting 5 rounds of trivia that include 10 questions each. This interactive dinner will include a two-act show with one major guarantee: the plot lines will be silly, the characters over-the-top, and the clues will be ridiculous. Families will be included as guests, suspects, victims, or detectives. The show is sure to be filled with adlibs, alibis, and accusations, as the performance metamorphoses throughout the dinner. Come and decide, WHODUNNIT! 7 & 10 p.m. WEEKEND MOVIE: Monsters University Wallenberg Auditorium, Nobel Hall of Science 8:30 p.m. FAMILY BINGO MANIA Banquet Rooms, Jackson Campus Center Bingo is FREE and a Gustie favorite! There will be 15 rounds of different style BINGOs with over $500 in prizes!
