1 Oklahoma State Urological Association O S U A OSUA News January Annual Meeting Registration In This Issue... OSUA 2016 Annual Meeting Registration Contents OSUA President s Message Report from the OSUA Executive Director Report from the OSUA Historian 2016 OSUA Faculty OSUA Board of Directors Educational Needs & Objectives and Accreditation Program Schedule OSUA Meeting Information 2016 Annual Meeting Registration Form President's Message: Plan to Attend Urology is a specialty that continues to evolve with time. This makes it challenging for private urologists to keep up with emerging new therapies, provide optimal care for patients and manage personal and family life. It gives me great honor to invite you and your families to attend the 2016 Oklahoma State Urological Association Annual Meeting scheduled to take place on March 4-5, 2016 at the Aloft Hotel in Oklahoma City. Friday night will offer a nice and relaxing evening with a Welcome Reception that includes spouses. It will give us ample time to socialize and keep up with personal interactions before hitting the science early on Saturday morning. This year we are excited to have Dr. Brian Flynn, a nationally renowned speaker, who will be joining us from Colorado and will discuss female reconstruction. We are also proud to have Dr. Adam Metwalli, a graduate of Oklahoma urology residency program who made it all the way to NIH. He will update us on the latest medical and surgical treatments of renal cell carcinoma. Not to mention our local esteemed faculty that includes Dr. Nabil Bissada, from the University of Oklahoma, who will update us on incidental adrenal masses; Dr. Blake Palmer, from the University of Oklahoma, who will discuss pediatric Urological emergencies for none pediatric urologist; Dr. James McGeady, a private urologist from Tulsa, who will discuss male reconstruction; Dr. Charles McWilliams, from the Univeristy of Oklahoma, who will tackle the changes in coding and the ICD- 10 dilemma; and last but not least, our budding urologists will be presenting some interesting and thought provoking cases to challenge all of us. It is meetings like this that bridges the gap between academic medicine and private practice. We would love for all of you to bring your spouses on Friday and your entire offices on Saturday. I look forward to seeing you in our home town. Basel S. Hassoun, MD OSUA President Report from the OSUA Executive Director It has been another eventful year for urology. We have a great opportunity to gather and re-group March 4 5 in Oklahoma City. We are pleased to meet at a new venue this year, the Aloft Hotel in Bricktown. I think it will be a refreshing change and its size will serve our meeting well. We will begin with an all are invited reception at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. You won t be hungry when you leave but it will still give you time to dine in Bricktown if you d like. Our meeting begins early Saturday with breakfast at 7:00 a.m. followed by Brian Flynn, MD. He will address the complications of vaginal mesh surgery: the why, what and management of this pervasive problem. After lunch he will speak on surgical options in vaginal reconstruction when you need to avoid permanent mesh. Adam Metwali, MD, will address the expanding field of The Incidental Renal Mass. This is something most of us have to deal with on a regular basis. Later in the day he will spend some time Charles A. McWilliams, MD continued on following page

2 on Familial Renal Cell Carcinoma and the fascinating surgical challenges he has experienced. We are delighted to have Dr. Metwalli back in Oklahoma having finished his residency here in PRACTICING UROLOGY IN 2016 A CHANGING LANDSCAPE SCATTERED WITH POT HOLES AND BARBED WIRE FENCES Sound negative? You are right; it is. It is almost impossible to keep up with the changes we are facing. The medical and surgical practice of urology is ever changing and growing with new treatment options and radical changes in the paradigms of prostate cancer screening and management just to name two. The EMR requirements and CMS regulations are more intense and pervasive while the consequences are more punitive. Our only hope is to stay informed and pay attention to the changes. We will then have to hire health care managers and strategists to help us navigate these unchartered troubled waters. I will bring a brief update on MACRA, the Medicare Access and Chip Reauthorization Act, passed on April 14, This included the repeal of SGR, the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate, which had created annual (or more often) reductions in CMS physician payments over the past 10 years. While a long-awaited relief, the replacement for SGR contains a long and deeply complex list of new reporting and management requirements that will boggle your mind. We will also give you an opportunity to consider the many educational and advocacy meetings being held in One that is very informative is the Joint Advocacy Conference from February 27 to March 1, sponsored each year by the American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU) and the AUA. We meet in Washington, DC near the Capitol and arrange meetings with our Congressional representatives and their staff. We speak in behalf of urology and hear from national authorities on issues relevant to the practice of urology. The cost to attend is reasonable. The OSUA in conjunction with the JAC and AACU sponsor some attendees each year. The OSUA meeting this year will also feature additional topics and speakers that you will want to hear. It will be a great opportunity to attend the meeting and book a little extra time to explore Bricktown whether by boat, carriage or a leisurely walk. Please register now and bring your staff at a reduced rate. This will be an informative weekend that you will not want to miss. Report from the OSUA Historian William L. Parry, MD The Department of Urology has established a Pioneer in Urology Award. This first award sponsored in its history will recognize lifetime achievement of individuals. The first honored recipient was Paul Donat, MD. Executive Director Michael Cookson presented him a plaque with his engraved picture and with recognition of his outstanding dedication and exceptional contributions in urology. A second same plaque is for placement in the urology library and a third was forwarded to his Urology Associates Office. The award ceremony was at the luncheon of the seminar on cancer of the prostate of the OU Department of Urology in September Dr. Cookson outlined Paul s many career achievements. Dr. Donat s niece Dr. Michelle Donat Herr, now at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, movingly expressed how close and supportive he has been in her life and her academic career in urology. Dr. McWilliams, OSUA Medical Director, covered with several examples how Paul is revered so well by community practicing urologists. Dr. Donat was my first chosen resident. With extra training in physiology/endocrinology, he had appointments approved to complete military service at the Walter Reed Army Hospital and later at the Army Hospital Base in Germany. Circumstances forced him to decline both and he ended up with a unique fulfilling experience of being in a MASH Unit in the Vietnam conflict. I am learning directly the endeavors of President Hassoun and Executive Director Cookson to meet the changing times of medical practice and education. They are developing interactions to benefit members of both the OSUA and the OU Department for various meetings ahead. A welcomed visit to a session of faculty, fellows, residents and students is an excellence experience of understanding what is occurring at the University. The OSUA Executive Office is able to record and save for review material of archival value or notes of general interest that Members would like to send. Please send your to osua@wjweiser.com or fax (847) The use of this facility would enable information of note to be available for attention at urologic meetings throughout the year. YOU RE INVITED! Please plan on attending the Welcome Reception on Friday, March 4, at 6:00 p.m. Connect with your fellow attendees and meet with exhibitors, all while enjoying a variety of cocktails and hors d oeuvres. Attendance is included with registration, so don t miss out on this unique networking opportunity
