The Riverside Alumni Chapter (RAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity launched its Kappa League youth mentoring program on Saturday, September 26, The leadership development program, although new for the Riverside Chapter, was originally founded in 1969 at Locke High School by the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter. This program is an important part of our fraternity s mission, says Martez Nix, Director of the RAC Kappa League. Young men need guidance and direction as they face the challenges of adolescence. During the orientation, Polemarch Demarius Carmichael and retired Navy Admiral Ed Moore provided an overview of the program curriculum and upcoming events, while tying them to the five phases of educational, occupational and social development: 1) Self Identity, 2) training in the areas of academics and career

2 Police Chief Honored for Commitment to Community On September 11, 2015, Chief Joseph Paulino became the first in history to receive the Charles Burris 1st Responders Award from the Black Culture Foundation of San Bernardino. The award recognizes members of the law enforcement whose accomplishments mirror the level of excellence exemplified by the first African-American Sheriff s Captain of San Bernardino County, Charles Burris, who passed away in February Chief Paulino makes sure that over 50,000 students of the San Bernardino City Unified School District are safe each day. He has implemented an explorer program for middle and high school students interested in law enforcement careers, volunteers at the annual Christmas toy giveaway and safety fairs, hosted a Searching of Mentors Summit at California State University San Bernardino and holds memberships with 100 Black Men of the Inland Empire and the Riverside Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. 3 Nonprofit Co-founders Recognized for Career Service On September 3, 2015, The Los Angeles Police Department s (LAPD) Real- Time Analysis and Critical Response (RACCR) Division recognized Jason O Brien, Sr. as its 2014 Detective of the Year. Since joining the LAPD in 1996, Jason O Brien has been a part of several important programs including Crime Stoppers, Internal Affairs Group, Valley Bureau Detectives and a specialized gang investigative unit. He is also active with the Los Angeles Police Protective League, where he represents his division as a delegate. Los Angeles Police Chief Beck attended the annual celebration, which was held at the Quiet Cannon Conference Center in Montebello, CA. Other members of the Department were also recognized in their divisions for outstanding service. Jason O Brien, Sr. is co-founder and President of Children s Resources, Inc. and an active member of the Riverside Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. Theta Pi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority held its gospel brunch scholarship fundraiser on Saturday, November 14, The event was held at the Mountain Meadows Country Club, and featured performances by the Loveland Praise Team of Loveland Church in Ontario, CA, Victory Praise Dancers and Psalmist Lillian Crawford. Three honorees and one organization were recognized for their leadership in education: Dr. Margaret Hill, Vice President of the San Bernardino City Unified School District Board of Education, Shannon O Brien, Co-founder and Executive Director of Children s Resources, Inc., Dr. Tori Weiston of Youth Mentoring Action Network and the Evelyn E. Perkins Scholarship Foundation.

4 The Western Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. held its Golden Alert Conference for youth and families on Saturday, November 21, The conference highlighted issues in education and law enforcement that are especially plaguing African- American communities. Representatives from law enforcement agencies, as well as attorneys and civil rights organizations were among the panelists, who discussed the importance of knowing legal rights and responsibilities during encounters with police. Additional conferences are being held by Sigma Gamma Rho in Houston, TX, St. Louis, MO and Chicago, Il as part of the Sorority s initiative to improve law enforcement relationships with the African-American community. A legislative agenda, which aims to prevent conflict between citizens and police contains several solutions: mandatory annual cultural sensitivity training for officers, dashboard and body cameras, use of special prosecutors when police officers are being tried, establishment of citizen review boards for complaints against police officers and best practices for diverse representation for community policing models.
