Each one of you bring a special perspective and skill set to our society. We as a board have worked on many aspects of the society and our annual conference. All TAPMS members and others who are interested in aquatic plant management, biology or ecology, or who are involved in the protection, management and restoration of water and wetland resources, are invited to attend the 2018 TAPMS Annual Conference. Whether you work in the public or private sector, as an aquatic weed management professional, water resource manager, researcher, or regulatory official, the 2018 conference will deliver up to date information on aquatic weed management tools and techniques, recent technological advances, research results that are relevant to your work, laws and regulations, public outreach initiatives, and TAPMS business. 4 Remembering Dr. Michael D. Netherland November 16, 1963 October 16, 2018 It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Mike Netherland on October 16, Dr. Michael Mike Dyer Netherland passed away after a long battle with cancer in the Haven Hospice Care Center, Gainesville, Florida at the age of 54. Mike was a Member of APMS since 1996 and served on the Board in several capacities including Director, Editor ( ) and President (2014). Mike received several APMS awards for contributions to aquatic plant management, including the T. Wayne Miller Distinguished Service award in 2011 and President s award in He was part of team efforts that received the Outstanding Research and Technical Contributor Award (2010) and the Outstanding Journal of Aquatic Plant Management Article Award (2011). Mike was also quite active in Regional Chapter activities and served at President of Florida APMS in Mike was born on November 16, 1963 in Huntington, Indiana to Lane and Joelene Netherland. He graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1982 (Lawton, OK); from Cameron University in 1986 (Lawton, OK) with a BS in Biology; from Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana) in 1989 with a MS in Botany and later earned his Ph.D. in Agronomy from the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) in Mike was accomplished as a Research Scientist and most recently worked for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the University of Florida s Center for Aquatic and invasive Plants in Gainesville, FL. He was a caring, dedicated individual who loved science, history and had an insatiable love of reading. He was passionate about education and loved interacting with the scientific community all over the world. He was an active and dedicated member of the Aquatic Plant Management Society both nationally and in local state chapters throughout the US. All that knew Mike will miss his wit and ability to inject humor to any situation. Though he will be sorely missed, he leaves a great legacy of science and friendship. His impact on this field, and the people in it, will continue to be felt for many years to come. Page 4

5 Highlights from the TAPMS 2018 Annual Conference Agenda The final agenda for the 2018 conference in San Antonio on November 26-27, 2018 is posted on the website and we re gearing up for a great event. If you re a TAPMS member but haven t yet decided to attend this year s conference, you re going to want to check out the agenda and register now to be sure you don t miss the talks, vendors, CEUs, and good times with colleagues! This year s program includes six different thematic sessions that will provide overviews of chemical control innovations and research and product testing results; technical training on pump selection, sprayer calibration, and drift minimization; highlights of cutting-edge aquatic plant management technology from drones to robotics; web and mobile-based tools for aquatic nuisance/invasive plant monitoring and management; aquatic plant ecology and restoration; and diverse integrated pest management strategies from manual removal to weevils to endocides. Speakers this year range from Craig Aguillard (APMS) and Carlton Layne (AERF) to some of the best industry experts, researchers, and aquatic plant management professionals out there not to mention some great student presenters who re traveling from around the southeast. 7 Showcasing Student Research at TAPMS 2018 For the upcoming 2018 annual conference, a TAPMS committee focused on inviting university students and professors to present their research relating to aquatic plant management and ecology. In the last few years, student participation has been low, but we are excited to announce that this year s conference has increased student involvement as part of TAPMS goal of providing opportunities for students to learn about aquatic vegetation management and conservation as well as establishing valuable connections with professionals and researchers in our field. This year, five students will participate in the conference, giving a total of seven oral presentations (see agenda). Our student presenters hail from University of Texas San Antonio, Mississippi State University, and North Carolina State University and will be presenting on topics from aquatic plant control, invasive plant ecology, and habitat diversity to using new technology for aquatic plant management. Students who present at the annual TAPMS conference will receive free registration and society membership from TAPMS as well as full travel reimbursal from the Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Foundation. Those students who present a talk at the conference have an opportunity to win a $500 award for Best Presentation. A panel of judges representing professionals and academia will be evaluating each talk and will select the overall winner. All students attending the conference are also invited to apply for a $1500 scholarship (deadline is November 20). Our new editor will be elected at the 2018 conference and will need your help to keep the newsletter interesting, timely, and relevant. Want to share information about an event of interest to the society? Have an interim update on new research or new product testing results? Willing to share a day in the life of story for students as a professional in our field or want to write a member highlight about a TAPMS colleague? Have a funny story from field work?
