1 A community of learners-working together Robertson School 550 Robertson Street Winnipeg, MB R2X 2C4 Ph: (204) Fax: (204) A message from Administration... March is here! This marks the beginning of the final term of our school year. February was a very busy month of learning at Robertson School. We celebrated I Love to Read with our theme: Canada Reads: Celebrating 150 Years. Each book/chapter that students read were translated into 1 kilometer and the students were able to see their reading help drive a Beaver Bus across Canada. Classrooms were encouraged to learn more about each city the bus stopped in. Congratulations to the staff and students who met this reading challenge. We read all the way from the West Coast to the East Coast of Canada, and students will be rewarded with a movie treat. Robertson School will also donate books to children in Africa to celebrate and spread the love of reading. During February we welcomed many guest readers to the school. We hosted Bob the Builder (Mr. Braun), former Blue Bombers Rod Hill and Dean Little, Nurse Tessa, Energy 106, Firefighter Mr. Malawski, RCMP Officer Mr. McLennan, Ms. Wendy, West Jet Flight Attendant Charles Edwards, Jazz Saxophonist Walle Larson, and School Resource Officer Constable Chinchilla. Special thanks to TV Host Terry Apostle, MLA Cindy Lamoureux, and City Councillor Mike Pagtakhan who also came to read. Thank you to all who took time out of their busy schedules to read to our students and inspire our students to love reading. There were a variety of activities planned throughout the month that also promoted the love of reading. We were very impressed with the enthusiastic participation of all of our students. Well done! Looking forward to this month, Rooms 132 and 149 will host an assembly teaching us about the Human Right of Freedom of Thought at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, Spring photos will be taken on March 22, 2017, and our Choir will represent Robertson School at the Music Festival on March 9, On Tuesday, March 14, 2017 report cards will be going home. Teachers will share student strengths, challenges and next steps for learning. Please review the report card with your child/children. This learning journey is a joint effort between home and school; together we build a community of learners. Our students strive to be the best they can be and we help them to achieve these goals. Please do not hesitate to contact your child s classroom teacher at any time. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on the evening of Thursday, March 16, 2017, and on the morning of Friday, March 17, 2017 (there will be no school all day due to teacher professional development in the afternoon). You will receive a note requesting your preferred date/time for parent-teacher conferences. Since we have many students, please return the note with your preferred date/time so we can do our best to accommodate your request. Spring Break begins Monday, March 27, 2017, and school begins again on Monday, April 3, Mr. T. Marchione Principal We hope you have a wonderful month of March and a great Spring Break! Mrs. J. 3 Music and Dance News from Ms. Roche At the end of February Robertson school enjoyed a performance from the School of Contemporary Dancers. We were grateful to see how much strength, dedication, flexibility and teamwork it takes to train towards the goal of being a professional dancer. As always, our students were wonderful and respectful audience members. March brings many exciting opportunities to Robertson School for music! On March 9 th, the choir will be singing at the Winnipeg Music Festival. We will be performing the song Gym Class from our upcoming musical Harmony High. The students are working hard on their musical theatre smiles and articulation! On March 15 th, the grade five students will be attending a performance of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. They will be learning all about the different instruments in the orchestra as well as hearing music by Canadian composers. Six of our students have been asked to sing in a special symphony choir that is made up of children from across the division. They will be performing on stage at the Concert hall with the symphony on April 5 th. Rehearsals continue for Harmony High. See below for the schedule. The choir is working very hard and doing an excellent job. It is important that ALL words are memorized for songs and scenes by the end of spring break.
