2 Burris High School basketball coach Joe Anderson will be conducting his Future wls basketball camp beginning on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. in Ball Gym for all wl students from second grade through fifth grade. This year s camp will offer two sessions with a discount for signing your wl up for both sessions. Please see the attachment for more information. Great News! The Secured School Safety Board through the Indiana Department of Education awarded a $15,000 Secured School Safety Grant to Burris Laboratory School. Many thanks to Ms. Jackie Davis (Burris mom) from Sponsored Programs Administration and Mr. Mike Peo for their hard work in securing this grant! 2

3 The Burris Band is selling organic lotion made by The Lotion Company. Band members in grades 4-12 will be selling the product until Friday, November 20. This is a great way to support the band program and get a head start on your holiday shopping. The Burris Laboratory School Botniks Robotics Team will be competing in their regional qualifier competition in Kokomo today. 4 All November spirit wear orders are due to Mr. Wlodarek by 3:30 p.m. on November 24. Please see attached flyer for apparel selections. Future City Club is cancelled this Friday. Grade Improvement Plan In an effort to provide accountability and support to high school students who are earning Ds or Fs in their classes, we closed their lunch until their grades improve. Students eat lunch in a designated classroom with a licensed teacher while working on their assignments. We have been very intentional in identifying students who are not completing assignments, not students who are working hard, yet receiving low grades. This program has been very successful. Many students have completed their assignments and raised their grades and now are not in closed lunch. Thank you to all the parents who have supported the school as we make their children accountable to complete their work. 4

5 Several students have reported to the Technology ffice that their ipad has suddenly stopped working. The most likely reason is that the student has downloaded or attempted to download apps at home to his/her ipad. ur filter and security system do NT allow downloaded apps to the ipad that are not sent by our system. Students will not have apps on their ipads that are not sent by our system. The ipad is an educational tool that is school property. Thank you for supporting us and articulating to your child that he/she should not attempt to download apps from home. Thank you to Ms. Sponseller, Mrs. Stokes, Ms. Karna, Mrs. Wallace and Mrs. Gray for supervising the Sadies Hawkins dance. It was a great night for our students. ver 100 high school students attended and competed in dance offs, races, and other fun activities. We appreciate all who took time out of their busy schedule to help! 5

6 Ivy Tech Community College admissions counselor, Seth Davidson, is visiting Burris on December 4 th. It will be held in the Counseling Center at 9:00am. There is a sign up sheet in the Counseling Center for any students interested. The National Student Leadership Conference is again seeking 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th grade students who have demonstrated academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, and leadership potential for this summer. At the NSLC, student will get to meet with and learn from prominent world leaders, experience a future career, and life on a college campus. Career areas for NSLC include biotechnology, business, engineering, journalism, media arts, nursing, psychology, and many more. Interested students should ask Mrs. Maugherman for a nomination by November 16. For more information, please come to the counseling center. Purdue Polytechnic in Anderson is having their Black and Gold Day on Friday, November 20 th from 8:15 to 2:45 pm. Juniors and Seniors get to spend the day doing several exciting hands on activities that highlight many of the courses/majors at Purdue Polytechnic. Areas of study include Engineering Technology, Computer Information Technology, Industrial Engineering Technology, and more. Students with a strong STEM background are prepared to succeed in Purdue Polytechnic and are great candidates for this event. Students who attend Purdue Anderson can achieve their goals at a fraction of the cost. It is very likely that a student can attain their degree at Anderson for less than half the cost of attending a residential campus. The savings on a four- year degree at Purdue Anderson could range from $50,000 to $150,000 depending on their college of choice. This Black and Gold Day is an excellent opportunity to learn more about an option you may not have considered before. Interested students can come to the Counseling Center to complete a nomination form and we will submit it for you. Juniors and seniors interested in adding college classes or internships or independent studies to their second semester schedules should begin planning now. Proposal forms for internships and independent studies are now available. They will be due no later than December 4th, so that they may be approved well before second semester. Talk to Mrs. Maugherman by December 4th if your plan includes online or on campus Ball State or Ivy Tech classes for second semester. The Create-A-Greeting Card Scholarship Contest is open to currently enrolled high school and college students in the United States. To enter, you must design a holiday, get well, or birthday greeting card and submit your work to be judged. Your photo, art, or graphics submitted must be your own original work and you must be at least 14 years of age to be eligible for this award. For more information and to apply, go to FastWeb.com, create an account, and search for this scholarship on the site. Submissions are due February 26, and prize money can reach up to $10,000. 6
