Seattle Chinese Garden Benefit The Seattle Chinese Garden Society hosted the Soaring Dragon Celebration and benefit dinner in the Brockey Center in November, raising approximately $50,000 for the continued growth and maintenance of the Seattle Chinese Garden. Published Author Yilin Sun, Basic & Transitional Studies Instructor, is co-editor of Demystifying Career Paths After Graduate School: A guide for second language professionals in higher education. The newly-published book offers concrete information to graduate students in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) field who are seeking employment at institutions of higher education. International Volunteers South s International Students particpated in Duwamish Alive!, a day devoted to caring for the vital waterway used by wildlife as well as industry and recreation, as well as the area that feeds it. Study Abroad Did you know that South has a study abroad program? There are a wide variety of study programs, subjects, and costs offered through South and their partners. South Africa, Italy, France, and China are just a few of the countries represented. In addition, the Global Impact program offers South students, faculty and staff an opportunity to partner with Seattle-based medical, educational and service oriented community organizations to provide healthcare and infrastructure focused volunteer service in developing countries. Wine Award Northwest Wine Academy alumni Cassie Wistrom recently finished an internship at the prestigious Lewis Cellars in California. Cassie received a specially made prize (above photo) featuring parts of the wine making process, for being the Brightest Personality. NISOD Award Winners Jane Harness, GED & ESL Math Instructor, and Sarah Skamser, Landscape Horticulture Instructor, are South s National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Award winners. They were selected by a committee of former NISOD award winners. Selection is based on commitment to professional development, length and quality of service to the college, and exemplary, noncontractual activities in support of our mission and goals. Council Interest in 13th-Year Promise Several members of the Seattle City Council have expressed interest in expanding our 13th-Year Promise Scholarship program model to all Seattle high schools. Council members participated in a discussion about the idea on November 16 in the council chambers at Seattle City Hall. Council participants were Sally Clark, Richard Conlin, Jean Godden, Bruce Harrell and Mike O Brien. I also was a panelist, along with Chancellor Jill Wakefield; Elizabeth Pluhta, Associate Vice President for College Relations and Advancement; and Chris Kinsey, Principal of Chief Sealth International High School. Our college Foundation guarantees every graduating senior from Chief Sealth and Cleveland High School the opportunity to attend South tuition-free for one year, regardless of grade point, test scores or other factors. New Student Success Hub A new Student Success Hub was created on the second floor of our Library, pulling together new and established programs, and coordinating the use of space. Library 219 has been converted into a resource room that can be booked by any program, department, staff, faculty or student group for any event or program that actively promotes student success. The goal of the Hub is to centralize the many student success programs throughout the campus and create an environment of study and support. The new student success center for Asian American Native American Pacific Islander students, open to all students, also is on the Library second floor as are the Writing Center and the Math Lab, both long-time student support programs. Home-Schoolers at South Brian Hughes, Howard Anderson, along with several Automotive students, gave 12 home-schooled students a lesson in car engines.

Pictured are the top three winners and the USA organizers. Christa Colouzis Arrested! South s own Christa Colouzis isn t looking very upset considering her arrest on November 8. She went to prison as part of the West Seattle Lock Up to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Well not actually prison, she was held a Talarico s Pizza in West Seattle. Christa and the other jailbirds raised $29,700.

Marijuana Still Prohibited on Campus This message of caution about possession of marijuana on campus was sent to all students of the Seattle Community Colleges. Even with passage of Initiative 502, possession of marijuana on campus remains prohibited. As explained, this applies to staff as well as to students. Dear Students of the Seattle Community Colleges, With the passage of Initiative 502, Washington State will allow people over the age of 21 to possess small amounts of marijuana for personal use. While this indeed changes how the state treats marijuana use and possession, it is important for you to understand that the Seattle Community College District policy remains unchanged, possession and use of marijuana on campus is considered a violation of a student conduct code, and is prohibited. Though the state law has changed, federal law still considers the possession and use of marijuana to be illegal. Because the Seattle Community Colleges receive federal funding (in the form of financial aid, contracts and grants), we must remain in compliance with the federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act that has been in effect since As a condition of receiving federal funds, the Seattle Community Colleges must certify that we have adopted and implemented a program and policies to prevent the unlawful possession, use or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees on campus. Because marijuana is still not legal at the federal level, it is considered to be an illicit drug. Initiative 502 has created a conflict between state and federal laws. However, because of our federal funding, federal law takes precedence. Violating compliance of the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act would put us at risk of losing federal funds, including financial aid. We ask that the Seattle Community College District community of students, faculty and staff continue to abide by federal laws and Washington Administrative Codes that apply to our campuses by barring the use or possession of any amount of marijuana on any of our campuses. 9 Page 9 Readerboard Policies South now has four electronic readerboards along 16th Avenue SW! The Public Information Office is ecstatic, but no one is happier than Tom Tower. Thank you Tom for all those years you spent climbing up a ladder and changing the signs letter by letter, in all kinds of weather. Guidelines regarding requesting announcements. The readerboards are for college-sponsored and college-related events. Examples include student activities, job and information fairs, wine and garden events, and visitor/special guest welcomes. Sorry, we can t put your birthday up there. If you would like a readerboard announcement, please Mary Kohl with the message wording including the name, time, place, and date of your event. Please provide as much notice as possible so your message can be scheduled in a timely manner. There are only four screens so PIO makes judgments regarding priority of placement and rotation. Last-minute situations arise when an important meeting or event has been scheduled with very little notice, which may necessitate schedule adjustments. No bells or whistles. Sorry, our official variance prohibits the use of electronic special effects like fireworks, wine corks popping, bulbs blooming, or the like. Instructor and veteran Bob Dela-Cruz organized a campuswide slide show which displayed photos submitted by the campus community of their deceased friends and family who served in the military. The bookstore had a display of military themed books and discussed the book, The Things We Carried by Tim O Brian. Save the Date! 10 Page 10 CAmPus Security Reports November 2 The vending machines in Rainer Hall and in the RSB hallway were broken into. The vending machine company was called to make the repairs. November 7 Security was called to the arboretum parking lot to investigate a reported theft of personal items from a student s car. The owner of the car was present and explained that her boyfriend had broken into the car and stolen some clothing. The boyfriend drove up and began to argue with the student. Security ordered the boyfriend to return the property and leave campus. The car owner was told to return to class. November 9 Three individuals were seen carrying property taken from a campus building to their car. Security ordered them to stop and put the property back and leave the campus. One individual is suspected in another possible theft. The situation is being investigated by Security. November 16 Security was called to the women s locker room in the Fitness Center regarding items stolen from a locker. The student s locker had been broken into and upon inspection, security discovered another 11 lockers that had also been broken into or damaged. Clothing and textbooks had been stolen. November 18 An instructor observed a student moving four or five large vises and later discovered one vise, partially hidden in the student s car. The instructor took a picture of the vise in the car and the incident is being investigated. November 28 A staff member discovered a handgun and ammunition, in a backpack that had been left in the Library. Campus security and Seattle Police were called, and the weapon was confiscated. The backpack belonged to a student, who was dismissed from campus subject to a investigation and sanctions according to the student conduct process. November 30 An instructor reported two students arguing in the parking lot. One student removed a crowbar from his car and began to threaten the other student. The crowbar wielding student took off in his car but not before the instructor wrote down his license plate number. Seattle Police arrived but were unable to find the student. 11 Page 11 News from Web Manager, Jason Gruenwald New! template South Launches Phase I of its New Web Site Finally, said everyone who works at South. Thank you everyone in Student Services who helped work on this project and many thanks to Brandon Tutmarc who was a vital contributor to the project. Our web site and template now match our print collateral and we are on track to strengthen our branding as we move forward. The PIO is looking to continue to improve the delivery of web content to students and the community by improving the user interface and accessibility of its online information. The launch of the new South web site and its resources will elevate the functionality beyond just paragraphs of text and PDF documents. We will increase usability as well as brand awareness with a template that will be consistent on all web pages. This template will have the ability to reach every page with updates to the entire site in its navigation and brand evolution. The new site will also be search engine optimized to ensure that South gets the highest rankings possible among its competition on the web. Also added are ways to include sharing pages using social media and tracking so users may increase South s exposure while they interact with our pages. With some of the latest tools and techniques available it will be possible to analyze the usage statistics page by page. Measurement and analysis of user activity will help the college achieve the intended objective of this resource, and allow South to evolve toward the most successful online resources. Measuring the outcome of usage will help form marketing strategies and future improvements. New! The PIO assisted International Programs to launch their new web site this summer. It was created by IP, a contractor, and customized/hosted by the PIO. Many features help assist the IP office update information and track online applications from overseas. This is the first phase of functionality and they are expanding a tracking system for overseas partners and students. Use the new calendar tool to input your own campus events! Visit /calendar. New! A new BLOG system has been created for department web sites. International and Academics are up and running while we work to complete the new Advising blog soon. (Broadcast media do not accept we re open messages because they create confusion.) Don t call Security; they are not in the closure decision loop and do not have road information. Closure Announcement Timing Day classes/offices Conditions permitting, decision announced by 5 a.m. Evening classes/offices Conditions permitting, decision announced by 2 p.m. Saturdays Campus decisions and announcements will be made if students and staff are on campus for classes or workshops. Sundays Colleges will make individual determinations for any campus activity. Weekends during break periods as listed on the District Instructional Calendar Colleges will make individual determinations for any campus activity. Weather Closure Process NOTE: In a power outage, the campus phone system will operate only for about 30 minutes of backup power, and our web site could be impacted. Campus divisions, offices, faculty and staff should change their personal recorded telephone greeting to reflect closure information. This can be done from home by dialing (206) , entering your extension, password, then pressing 3 and following the instructions for changing your personal greeting. If the campus is open, but you are unable to get here, notify your department. Call or leave a message on your department s main phone line, not on a support staff member or administrator s personal line. If your message is left on a main line, anyone who makes it to campus can retrieve the message. As your own status or the campus status changes, please update your personal voice mail message immediately, so that students and staff are able to get the most current information. Don t rely solely on your department s support staff to be able to relay your status to students. For contracted events at South (e.g., a meeting in the Brockey Center) alternate closure action may be necessary. For example, if meeting participants are able to reach the campus and wish to continue their meeting, that event location on the campus may need to remain open. Decisions about specific building opening/closing and staffing in these situations will be made by the President or designate and senior staff involved. The weather outside is frightening! Single campus closures Each campus will make its own decision and announcement for closure due to weather-related emergencies such as snow, or in situations that affect only one campus (such as power outage, fire). The decision will be communicated to the chancellor or designate. District-wide closures In event of widespread or catastrophic emergency, a decision and announcement will be the same for all campuses and offices of the district, following discussion by the college presidents and chancellor (or their designees), or by the Emergency Communications Committee, as called for in the district-wide emergency communications plan.
