12 Jayhawks Struggle Against Mercyhurst NE. The Jayhawks traveled to Niagara Falls, New York on Friday, 12/2 to wrestle Mercyhurst North East Community College in their final dual before the National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind. MCC had a few injuries that put them behind in the dual. It s hard to give up 12 point to a team and still win the dual, said Head Coach James Tietema. Our guys wrestled flat today. I hope it was the long trip to Niagara that made us wrestle so flat. Mercyhurst NE beat the Jayhawks The bright spot for the Jayhawks was freshman Corey Robinson (Whitehall HS/Whitehall, MI). Corey weighed in at 125 lbs, wrestled up at 133 lbs, and got the win for the Jayhawks. Freshman Jacob Klingaman (Jackson Northwest HS, Jackson, MI) and freshman Owen Donovan (Utica Eisenhower HS/Chesterfield, MI) also wrestled up a weight class and came away with a win. It s tough to ask kids to weigh-in 8 to 10 pounds under the weight class they will wrestle, but these guys did it, added Coach Tietema. Plus they came through for their team with wins! The Jayhawks will wrestle Saturday, 12/3 in the Thunder Wolves Open at Niagara County Community College. The Jayhawks traveled to East Lansing on Sunday, November 20th to compete in the MSU Open. They sent 13 wrestlers and although there were no placers, they did have several notable wins against Division I wrestlers. MCC wrestlers were 8-15 against Division I opponents and 4-5 against the Big Ten. When we compete at the MSU Open we know we are going to get some bumps and bruises, but I think we wrestled very well, said Head Coach James Tietema. I can see a lot of improvement in our team from when we wrestled at the Ben McMullen Open in week 1. The Jayhawks competed well with a freshman heavy team. Freshman Benny Gomez (Holt HS/Holt, MI) went 3-2 with wins over Julian Saldaña of Michigan State and Kristopher Hill of Eastern Michigan. Freshman Bryan Jones (Warren Lincoln HS/Warren, MI) came away with a win over Jon Martin of Central Michigan University.
