1 FALL 2007 INSIDE: A Piece of Eta rho History 2 Welch/Aull Memorial Scholarship 3 dedicated alumni and friends 4 Alumni Update 5 Alumni Push to Reach $1,000,000 to Start Construction Are you ready for the first chapter meeting in the Oma Kron Chapter Room in our new Fraternity House on 14th Street? You can help us get ready! The ΣΑΕs have moved in to their new house and Eta Rho is edging closer. Yet we still need to get to the $1,000,000 pledge level before we can break ground. I wish you all would visit the site and share the view of the campus from our vantage point. Look at our Web site: to get an idea. Better yet, visit WKU. If you have not been there lately you will be amazed at the changes. Our challenge of getting to the $1,000,000 pledge level is obviously up to all our alumni. We need more brothers to make a pledge. A combination of both large and small donations will get us there. Look over the list of contributors, call some of your pledge class brothers, and donate a gift together from your pledge class. Naming rights for a room are available. Wouldn t the Alpha Pledge Class Suite look nice on a bedroom door? The collegiate members are working hard to ensure the legacy of Sigma Nu at Western. Let s challenge each other to do our part and contribute to the building of a new legacy; a place where brothers can gather and grow for years to come. Call or me if you have suggestions or questions about the campaign. Fraternally, Tom Hart 66, HP 57 Campaign Vice Chairman (270) tom@bhtw.com Sigma Nu Celebrates Successful Recruitment Chapter Improves Campus Image The last few months have shown a new side of the Eta Rho Chapter, resembling the successful chapter of the past. Our members have put in time and effort to transform ourselves from the guys who barely show up to events to the gentlemen known as Sigma Nus. The most improved chapter on campus is none other than Eta Rho. With the plan put into motion a few years ago, combined with rising numbers and multiple awards, our active chapter is ready to be the best. Brothers and their dates enjoyed Spring Formal in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. ACADEMICS Last school year, one of our main focuses was our grades. Entering the spring 2007 semester, we were ranked 14 of 15 in grades with a 2.3 G.P.A. Entering this semester we are ranked 10th of 16 fraternities. The spring pledge class was fourth out of 11 groups. This semester our combined chapter G.P.A. was a This is above the all-men s average, meaning we are eligible for the Reed Morgan Award next year. Beginning the fall (Continued on page 2)

2 Eta Rho NEWS page 2 A Piece of Eta Rho History ALUMNUS SPOTLIGHT Dr. Randall Capps 62, HE 77 Dr. Randall Capps 62, HE 77 played an extremely important role in the history of Eta Rho. In 1962, Dr. Capps arrived at Western Kentucky University as an instructor in the Department of English, teaching public speaking and freshman composition. The Board of Regents had recently authorized the development of a national fraternity system on campus. Several local fraternities existed but were not officially recognized by the college. A student in Dr. Capps classes that year, Hub Reese 65, OK 78/HP 5, from Gallatin, Tennessee, happened to notice a Sigma Nu mug on his professor s desk. Capps was initiated into Sigma Nu at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Hub was a member of Oma Kron, a local fraternity at Western searching for a national fraternity with which they could affiliate. Hub later brought some of his Oma Kron brothers to talk about Sigma Nu, and Dr. Capps put them in touch with Dick Fletcher, the legendary Sigma Nu executive director. Soon after, a Sigma Nu colony was formed and chartered as Eta Rho Chapter in Today, Dr. Capps is the president and founder of Leadership Strategies Group (LSG) in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The company assists clients in organizational effectiveness and human performance improvement. Similar to Sigma Nu, LSG s passion is to help clients improve their efficiency, productivity, and profitability by developing and aligning their people, systems, and processes to reach higher levels of performance. The company works with the clients leadership, culture, mission, and values to develop solutions. As brothers develop their skills through fraternal experiences, they are also running the fraternity as a business, caring and growing for future brothers and alumni. Over the years of Eta Rho s existence, Dr. Capps has witnessed successes and struggles, but the main theme he has noticed is the brotherhood enjoyed by the men of Sigma Nu. His personal reward has been to see the men mature, graduate from Western, and become contributing members of society. He was part of the original House Corporation and recalls the chapter house was intended to be temporary, due to the fact that it was built in 1928 as a residence. It will be wonderful to see Eta Rho occupy a house built for fraternity living. That is the reason I gave to the building fund. with a very large pledge class, we are pushing academic excellence to not only the new members, but the entire chapter. We have designated study tables that all new members and actives with a 2.0 G.P.A. and below attend twice a week. PHILANTHROPY The chapter had a very exciting philanthropic year. During the Greek Week award convocation, we placed third in the fraternity blood drive and won the philanthropic service award for participation in on-campus community service. We also had a successful powder-puff tournament last fall. This fall, we are holding the annual powder-puff tournament again at Hobson Grove Park, with a goal to donate $4,000 to Girls Inc. MEMBERSHIP We are a non-hazing fraternity. We do not breed frat boys; however, we do create Sigma Nu men. That statement echoed throughout the house during this year s recruitment. With an impressive showing of the active chapter and great guidance by our recruitment chairman, Brandon Bawcom 05, HP 801, we saw great results. A total of 27 new candidates signed, were installed, and started their Successful Recruitment (Continued from page 1) candidate process. We had the highest increase in chapter growth on campus and were given free head fees through the Inter-Fraternity Council this semester. ALUMNI/PARENTS EVENTS During WKU Parents Weekend, September 8, Eta Rho welcomed nearly 30 parents with house tours and a luncheon at T.G.I. Friday s. Afterward, the men of Sigma Nu arranged a parents tailgate and, as a group, cheered the Western football team to a remarkable home opener win. We invite all alumni to Homecoming on November 10 as Western plays Troy. The chapter will have a tent and luncheon set up for all Sigma Nu brothers on the South Lawn. We also want to thank all those who gave donations during recruitment and supported the chapter at the golf scramble on August 24. In addition, we greatly appreciate those who showed up during the recruitment nights to display our strong alumni support. INTRAMURALS The semester has begun, and Eta Rho is starting this year s intramurals with two flag football teams. The next intramural event will be the 5k Turkey Trot marathon. We anticipate making a competitive showing in all events. CHAPTER GROWTH Eta Rho is known for its success in the past, and I m proud to say we are working our way back to the top. We are fifth overall in chapter size, with 35 actives and 27 new members. We have raised the bar this year from Most Improved Chapter to winning the Reed Morgan Award. We set a goal during recruitment of 25 men and brought in 27. We set a goal of winning Most Improved Chapter on campus and last spring we brought that award home. We are a chapter that can think about the possibilities and achieve them. Our brothers may hold diverse opinions, but there is one thing we all can agree on: we like winning, and, during the Greek Week convocation, we like watching Sigma Nu go up on stage. Fraternally, Tye Lawson 06, HP 807 Eminent Commander (502) tye.lawson@wku.edu

3 page 3 Welch/Aull Memorial Scholarship Rapidly Approaching Endowment In the first year of the newly reactivated Welch/Aull Memorial Scholarship, the scholarship has already proven to be an effective way to promote growth to first-year chapter members, as well as a dynamic recruiting pitch. As stated in the last alumni newsletter, the Welch/Aull Scholarship is given to a first-year member who displays a high level of scholarship, campus involvement, and overall character. The 2007 recipient of the $1,000 Welch/Aull Memorial Scholarship was Marcus Moseley 06, HP 822. In Marcus s first active semester, he already holds the recorder office position. In addition, Marcus maintained a 3.0 G.P.A. and attended LEADERShape, a leadership conference for the top 50 young leaders of WKU. Five new members are participating in the Dynamic Leadership Institute on campus this semester as well. Eta Rho Annual Golf Tournament sigma nu Alumni and collegians gathered for the annual Eta Rho golf tournament on August 24. Prior to tee time, brothers enjoyed a barbecue lunch while catching up. Several generations of Sigma Nus were represented. The golf tournament s winning foursome donated their cash prize to the Welch/Aull Memorial Scholarship fund. Winners were Lou Lesemann 80, HP 354, Jeff Morgan 77, HP 300, Robert Huffman 81, HP 374, and Jeff Stone 77, HP 311. Left: Members and alumni gather before the golf tournament to enjoy a barbecue. Right: Brothers Reed Morgan 64, HP 15, George Wilson 64, OK 111/HP 18, and Ed Taylor 67, HP 95 catch up before golfing. Gamma Omicron Pledge Class Jack Blaha Warren Central H.S.
