We are back to work now on a very busy concert season! Thank you for a great attendance for last night s KMEA Festival Preview Concert. Both bands performed very well and I am looking forward to their festival performances next Friday evening at Scott County HS. Please see the calendar to the left, on the website and on last night s concert program for rehearsal and performance dates from now through the end of school. We will have a full and fun remainder of the concert season if all students come to class, rehearsals and concerts practiced and ready to perform at high standards. Please try to attend this Monday night s Area Concert to support local middle school bands as well as our HC Band. The concert is a past tradition we have restored to encourage the relationship of local middle and high school music programs and help middle school students make the transition to high school band easier. Also please attend the New Member Orientation to help potential incoming students and families see an energetic and excited band family and program. We will be speaking to the students and parents about the HC Band program, have our students meet incoming students and answer questions, and acquaint parents with the HC Band Booster organization. The calendar is full of wonderful HC Band events that are briefly described on page 10 of this newsletter. We look forward to the remainder of the concert season and the celebration of our seniors as we honor them in this newsletter and at the HC Band Banquet on Monday, May 24 at Immanuel Baptist Church. As always, thank you for your time and efforts! Please call or me for any questions. Sincerely, Bill Kite, Director of Bands, HCHS william.kite@fayette.kyschools.us or

2 Henry Clay Band Notes Page 2 of 12 President s Pen HC Band Booster Co-Presidents Dear Band Family, As we continue in a busy season of concerts and other performances for our ensembles, April seems like a good time to say thank you! We often use this space to thank our directors for their tireless work and dedication to our children- and we hope every parent will let Mr. Kite and Mr. Bayerle know how much you appreciate all they do. We also try to thank our parent volunteers as often as we can. There are so many people who work year-round to make our booster and band program great! These include our board members, everyone who helps with fundraisers and serve as chaperones and all who find ways to support the band. None of what we see week in, week out with the band classes, concerts and marching band season would be possible without these family members! This month, we d also like to thank the students themselves! To each one of you who dedicates class time, early morning or after-school hours for extra classes, rehearsals, concerts, as well as the many hours spent in the summer and fall for the marchers, we offer our gratitude and continued support! Your dedication to playing your instrument as well as you can and working as a team for the good of the entire HCHS Band program is phenomenal! Good luck to each of our students in the rest of the school year and remember to let your parents and other family members know you appreciate what they do for you! We re all looking forward to the remaining concerts and the grand finale, the Spring Band Banquet on May 24th! Kathy and Scott Riley Co-Presidents, kathy.riley523@gmail.com The HC Band Boosters Need You! We still have FOUR crucial positions to fill: Vice President, Treasurer, Co-Treasurer and Equipment Chair. The Vice-President(s) assists the president and helps with various committees. It is basically a year of learning the details of the Booster organization in preparation for becoming president the following year. The Treasurer handles the deposits and writes checks for band expenses with the exception of Bingo. Our records are currently in Quick Books, which is a pretty easy system to use. Our current treasurer, Geni Osborn, will be available to train the new treasurer and help next year with any questions that come up. Experience or training in accounting is NOT necessary! The Co-Treasurer handles the Bingo financial record keeping and check-writing. There are forms to fill out each week and quarterly reports to file with the Department of Charitable Gaming. Jerry Peavler has done a great job this year to build on the work of past co-treasurers to make this job as streamlined as possible. The Equipment Chair is the Pit Crew leader during marching season and assists in getting equipment (mostly percussion) to concert sites later in the season. This position involves making sure there are enough pit crew workers for football game half time performances and competitions, as well as communicating with the truck driver about dates, times and locations of competitions. We must fill these positions to function as a booster organization next year!! Please consider filling one of these vital positions by calling Kathy Riley at Kathy.riley523@gmail.com or one of the Nominating Committee members: Stacy Hunt at dsmhunt@insightbb.com, Lisa Bush at mlnb1@yahoo.com, Kathy Edwards at kathyandrussell@hotmail.com, Michelle Morris at mkmorkan@yahoo.comor or Stephanie Baldwin at kybaldwin@windstream.net.

3 Henry Clay Band Notes Page 3 of 12 Bingo Don t forget that even though we re entering the last eight weeks of the school year, bingo fundraising continues throughout the school year AND summer. However, for bingo to continue, we MUST fill several key positions, including some, which will be vacated at the end of May. Open positions include co-treasurer, bingo callers, counter workers, and inventory workers. (See last month s newsletter for descriptions of the positions.) As always, we also need volunteer pull tab sellers each Saturday evening if at all possible, please sign up by Thursday of any given week. Remember, bingo and other fundraising proceeds benefit ALL students who participate in one or more band programs. If bingo ends for lack of adult involvement, ALL of our wallets will be dramatically impacted by the resulting out-of-pocket cost increases at all levels of band involvement. Volunteering to help with bingo can be a great way to meet other parents and students please join us now, so that you can be trained in your new role before the senior parents leave! If you don t already have a major, ongoing HCBB fundraising role, step up to do your share!!! For more information, contact: Lee Kemp at or kempinsurance@windstream.net; Jean O Daniel at or jean.odaniel@insightbb.com; or Diane Bradley at or scrabrose@windstream.net. Thank you. Urgent Need for Assistance Approximately half of the proposed HC Band budget for is expected to come from Bingo ($50,000). In order for this fundraiser to continue, the Co-Treasurer position must be filled by April 19th when the Board meets to elect officers. The Co-Treasurer is responsible for filling out weekly forms based on information the Bingo workers provide, as well as quarterly reports. This person also writes checks and reconciles the Bingo account, with the supervision of the treasurer and presidents. This position does not require accounting expertise, just a willingness to learn the ropes from our current Co-Treasurer and an ability to use or learn to use Excel spreadsheets. We MUST fill this position in order for Bingo and the band to continue operating as we have been. Please contact one of us if you are able to help with this position. Kathy and Scott Riley, kathy.riley523@gmail.com or 16scottr@insightbb.com
