2 Javelina Hash By Fred Nuesch, Coordinator of Athletic External Affairs AT THE END of the day on Monday, I completed by 45 th year s a member of the Javelina athletic staff. It s unbelievable that that many years have passed since I pulled nto Kingsville on Aug. 20, 1968, in my Javelina-blue Mustang and ith all my belongings in a small U-Haul trailer. I had flown to South Texas for my interview and it didn t seem hat far. Several weeks later when I made the move and drove, I found hat from Paris, Texas, to Kingsville, Texas, is a pretty good trek. I emember reaching San Marcos and turning South toward ingsville and thinking, It can t be that much farther. I arrived in my new home four hours later. So many great things have happened during those 45 years. Selecting the top moment is easy. I met my wife for life, Joan, hortly after arriving here. I was so caught up in my sports and my job in Paris that I adn t spent much time looking for a bride. But they say the right ne will come along when it s time, and that happened for me. There are so many highlights over the six decades in Kingsville. t would be totally impossible to list even the top 100. There was the three-week trip to Europe with the football team, hree different trips to Hawaii, games and meets in Mexico City and onterrey, six national football championships, more conference itles than most schools have won in their history, the honor of orking with some of the greatest coaches and athletes in the istory of college athletics, two trips to the Pro Football Hall of ame to see Javelinas inducted and dozens of trips to other halls of ame to see Javelinas become members. There have been games in Cowboys Stadium; the Astrodome; loha Stadium in Honolulu (for the first game ever in the facility eaturing the Javelinas and the University of Hawaii); Olympic tadium in Berlin, Germany (when the city was still divided); lympic Stadium in Paris, France, and Olympic Stadium in Vienna, ustria. Thanks to my position with the Javelinas, I have been able to ork at Olympic Games, World University Games, Goodwill ames and Olympic Festivals. I have received more recognition than anyone deserves and this as come thanks to my association with one of the best collegiate thletic programs in the nation. I ve made so many friends coaches, players and fans. There ave been thousands. Many of them have become close friends for ife. These friends are not only Javelinas but from other schools as ell. I would laugh when I tell people I dearly hated Southwest exas State. This developed soon after arriving in Kingsville. here was no team in any sport you wanted to beat more than the obcats. But I probably had more friends who were on the SWT athletic taff than at any other opponent school. Thanks to my sports information position and my 24 years as (Continued on Page 3) Planting a Garden A plot of land on King Street at Sixth Street was cultivated and planted last week by members of the Javelina athletic training staff as a community improvement project for the Keep Kingsville Beautiful campaign.
