Meetings begin at 1900 hours (7PM). *Nov and Dec meeting held 3 rd Thursday. If you wish to join or have questions about the American Legion, please call one of the Post Officers. Next Meeting: 26 July at 7:00 PM June Meeting Minutes Meeting called to order at 7:00 PM by Commander Will Collard. 10 members present. Colors advanced, prayers offered, POW/MIA empty chair recognized, and the Preamble recited. Membership: Tom Dougherty, who recently joined the Legion, was welcomed by the members of the Post. Minutes: The Minutes of the May 2018 meeting were read. Bruce Moran made a motion that the Minutes be approved as read; seconded by Ruth Wrigley and unanimously approved. Treasurers Report: The Treasurer s Report was read. The Post paid $43 to register the trailers for the Boy Scout Troop and $24.50 to Eversource. Bruce Moran made a motion that the Treasurers report be accepted as read, pending audit; seconded by Ruth Wrigley and unanimously approved. Bob Glover stated there was a $2 charge on our bank statement based on an incident that occurred last year when the bank account was hacked. Bob will speak to the bank to get this money back. Sick Call and Employment: Jonathan Matlock is now working full-time. Old Business: 4th of July Parade in Brookline: o Four Veterans are identified as needing rides in the parade. Jim Pope stated they are prepared for at least 5 at this time. o Everyone is to meet at the Legion Hall by 0930 so we can move to the start point of the parade and those Veterans needing rides can get in the vehicles. o Uniform for the event is a white short-sleeve shirt; no jacket or tie; Legion Hat; grey or blue slacks; and comfortable walking shoes. o Bruce Moran will take the Flag Stands to the Ballpark ahead of the parade. o Greg d Arbonne will contact Bill Graham to ask if Bill can bring his sound system to be used at the Ballpark. o Greg d Arbonne will send an out to the Legion and the VFW members and ask who intends to participate so we have an approximate count: o Spaghetti Dinner: Greg d Arbonne reported the event brought in approximately $1,500. The members said it was a very good event and thanked all who participated and thanked the Boy Scout Troop for their hard work and achievement. o Boy State and Girl State: Bob Glover recommended the Post go to the High School and explain to the administration what Boy and Girl State is all about because the Guidance Counselors are doing a poor job of explaining the program to the students. Harold Ryder stated we can put the information in an and send it out to the students through the school and suggested we do this. Greg d Arbonne stated he will go speak to the Principal on this issue and the issue of letting Military Recruiters into the school.

2 o Brookline Birthday Celebration: Commander Collard stated a representative from the committee will attend our July Post meeting to tell the members about the celebration. Commander Collard spoke about the various ways the Post can sponsor events that will also help in awareness about the Post and attract new members. Greg d Arbonne will publish the information in the July newsletter. o Greg d Arbonne stated the solar lights we purchased will be attached to the Post sign. New Business: Bob Glover stated he and Ruth Wrigley attended the American Legion State Convention. The State Officers were elected, and the new State Commander is Emil Oulette. Bob also stated he received the new member cards, so he reminded everyone that the new year for dues starts on 1 July; you can either pay online or give the money to Bob at a meeting or mail it to him. Bob also stated 2019 is the 100th Anniversary of the forming of the American Legion. Commander Collard asked if the members were interested in doing another Coffee with a Vet. Everyone agreed this is a good event. Greg d Arbonne made a motion that the Post hold a Coffee with a Vet on September 8, from 9 to 11 AM, at the Post; seconded by Bruce Moran and unanimously approved. It was recommended we advertise via Facebook and the Community Access Channel, as well as signs at the Transfer Station and outside the Post building. Correspondence: The Post received the Assessor s Report. While the Town of Brookline owns the property, it was still assessed. The land is assed at $106,000 and the building at $106,300, for a total of $212,300. This is what needs to be reported on the Post s Tax Return next Spring. For the Good of The Post: News For & From Members Del Porter stated he was at Pine Grove Cemetery (the main cemetery in Brookline) and he put 6 American flags on graves of veterans that did not have flags and replaced 2 flags around the flag pole there that were missing. Greg d Arbonne stated Del had previously mentioned having symbols of the various military services placed around the flag headstone at the Pine Grove Cemetery. Greg asked that everyone look online for some that could be placed outside for this task. There being no further business, the closing prayer was said, and the colors retired. The meeting adjourned at 7:58 PM. The next meeting is 26 July at 7 PM. Brookline 250th Celebration The Town of Brookline will be celebrating its 250 th Birthday in Planning for this celebration has already started and Commander Collard is a member of the planning committee representing our Post. From the official Committee literature: The 250th committee is envisioning a year-long celebration, starting with a New Year s Eve gala on December 31, 2018 to ring in Brookline s 250th. We also have a parade planned for Saturday September 21, 2019, followed by fireworks that night. The theme of the 250th celebration is Past, Present, and Future. Our goal for the year is to have at least 1-2 events happening every month. If you have any questions you can Sheryl Corey Chairperson of the 250th committee at cecorey@aol.com. Together we can make 2019 the best year of celebrations that this town has ever seen! Commander Collard would like the Post to participate in as many events as possible and to be a sponsor to show the Post s support to the Town and as a way to thank the citizens of the Town for their support of our Post over the many years. The next two pages are lists of events and sponsor opportunities that we will discuss at our next meeting. Please review and come to the meeting to provide your ideas and feedback.

8 Joe's Funeral Joe passed away. His will provided $30,000 for an elaborate funeral. As the last guests departed the affair, his wife, Helen, turned to her oldest friend. "Well, I'm sure Joe would be pleased," she said. "I'm sure you're right," replied Jody, who lowered her voice and leaned in close. "How much did this really cost?" "All of it," said Helen. "Thirty thousand." "No!" Jody exclaimed. "I mean, it was very nice, but $30,000?" Helen answered. "The funeral was $6,500. I donated $500 to the church. The wake, food and drinks were another $500. The rest went for the memorial stone." Jody computed quickly. "$22,500 for a memorial stone? My God, how big is it?!" "Two and a half carats." Computer Password During a recent password audit, the security team discovered a Marine used the following password: MickeyMinniePlutoHueyDeweyLouieDonaldGoofyScaremento. When asked why he had such a long password, he replied, I was told it had to be eight characters and at least one capitol.
