1 Volume XXX Issue 3 April 2018 Happy Spring! Volume XXVI I I Issue 3 April 2016 It s hard to believe we have three-fourths of the school year behind us! Now, it s time for us to buckle down and press on with the remainder of the school year. Please help encourage your child(ren) to be in school and cut down on unnecessary absences. The third nine weeks ends on April 10th and report cards will be distributed on April 19th. Has your child been bringing home their interims? Upcoming interim date is May 17th. Interims are not mailed home. Please be sure to ask your child to see their interims, especially if you know they are having difficulty in a particular class. One Parent/Teacher Conference is scheduled for the remainder of the school year on Wednesday, May 23rd - appointments are necessary. However, if you have concerns about your child s performance in any of his/her classes, please call the school and speak with their teacher(s). If you need to schedule a conference with more than one of your child s teachers at a time other than scheduled conferences, please call our Counseling Office ( , Ext. 3) to arrange a conference. Cell phones are primarily for after-school hours and lunch (in the cafeteria only). Students are not to have their phones turned on during class, nor are they to be text messaging anyone. Your enforcement/support of these rules is greatly appreciated. Any student who uses their phone during class is subject to having it turned in to an administrator and a parent is required to come to the school to pick up the phone between the hours of 2:30-4:00 p.m. Our dress code will be enforced this spring. Please read our rules on appearance and attire. In closing, please let us know if there is anything we can do to help your child achieve academic success throughout the remainder school year. Our teachers are making diligent efforts to make parent contact on a frequent basis. Our Assistant Principals, Miss Lauderdale and Mr. Gebhardt are available for any concerns you have, as well as our School Counselors, Ms. Morganti, Ms. Clark, Ms. Wolfrey, and Mr. Kilmartin. Please feel free to call us if we can be of any assistance. Sincerely, Jacqueline Bass-Fortune, Principal

2 Chancellor Charger News Page 2 It s Springtime April Showers bring May flowers not to mention summer attire. With warm weather and sunny days approaching, students quickly revert from wearing turtlenecks and coats to wearing tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops. Although it is often difficult to find shorts of decent length, especially in the junior sections of clothing departments, it is necessary for students to dress appropriately for school. All students are to use good judgment in selecting the clothing and footwear they choose to wear to school each morning. Basic rules regarding Appearance & Attire No bare backs, strapless tops, or midriffs showing - abdomens shall be covered at all times No short-shorts/biking shorts/skirts/dresses No see-through clothing No undergarments worn as outer wear No cut-off shirts at the bottom, sides, arms, or armpits No clothes with large holes (especially jeans) No sunglasses in the building No inappropriate/obscene/undesirable slogan t-shirts or clothing No sagging pants No leggings except when worn with a long covering for both front and back Cleanliness and neatness are essential to an effective school environment. It is important that positive impressions be formed as a result of student appearance and attire. Students should remember that they represent their school to the community. Any mode of dress that interferes with the operation of the school or classroom is strictly prohibited. Failure to abide by the Appearance & Attire rules may constitute a cause for disciplinary action. Community Service Seal The Spotsylvania County School Board desires to encourage students to perform service to their community and to learn that through such service the student not only benefits the community but also enhances his/her own life. Therefore, the Board will recognize those students who have provided extended service to the community by awarding a seal on theire diploma. In order to earn this seal, the student must perform one hundred and forty-four hours of service to the community. This would be the equivalent of one hour per week for the four years that the student is in high school. This service can be provided at any time over a high school career, or could be performed in one year. Regulations governing the types of service and tracking of hours have been developed by the principals and are available at the school.
