2 ETCETERA... Dear Sisters and Brothers, Last Sunday, the feast of All Souls, we gave to their families the crosses with names of the deceased whose funeral liturgies were celebrated at St. Aloysius. I did not realize that since the feast of All Saints last year until now, we have had sixty funeral liturgies in the parish. That is a large number! I thank Ken Thevenet for preparing the liturgy, having the crosses made, and coordinating the logistics with the bereavement committee members whose important ministry is not always recognized. I must confess I was happy finally to cast my vote! It means the campaign season is over and I no longer have to put up with all the untrue accusations the candidates throw at each other. True to the terminology of running against someone, most did not offer much of their own agenda except for being against somebody. I found the research below interesting and want to share it with you. The holy grail for helping youth remain religiously active as young adults has been at home all along: parents. Mothers and fathers who practice what they preach and preach what they practice are far and away the major influence related to adolescents keeping the faith into their 20s, according to new findings from a landmark study of youth and religion. Just 1 percent of teens ages 15 to 17 raised by parents who attached little importance to religion were highly religious in their mid-to-late 20s. In contrast, 82 percent of children raised by parents who talked about faith at home, attached great importance to their beliefs and were active in their congregations were themselves religiously active as young adults, according to data from the latest wave of the National Study of Youth and Religion. Other factors such as youth ministry or clergy or service projects or religious schools pale in comparison. "No other conceivable causal influence... comes remotely close to matching the influence of parents on the religious faith and practices of youth," Smith said in a recent talk sharing the findings at Yale Divinity School. "Parents just dominate." One of the strongest factors associated with older teens keeping their faith as young adults was having parents who talked about religion and spirituality at home, Smith said. Other key factors included having parents for whom personal faith is important and who demonstrate that faith through attending services. Teens whose parents attended worship with them were especially likely to be religiously active as young adults. Among related findings, parents from religious traditions that in general promote greater commitment and encourage discussing faith outside the sanctuary also were more likely to have children who remained active in their faith as young adults. For example, two-thirds of teens raised by black Protestant parents and half of adolescents with conservative Protestant parents had high or moderate levels of religiousness as young adults. 3 other end, 70 percent of teens raised by mainline Protestant parents had minimal or lower levels of religiousness as young adults. If parents and faith communities are not able to communicate their beliefs, Smith said later, "The game's over, already." "Parents, for better or worse, are actually the most influential pastors... of their children," Smith said. "Parents set a kind of glass ceiling of religious commitment, above which their children rarely rise." This only confirms what the Church has said all along: that parents are the primary catechist and teacher of the faith to their children. While we at school and church try to provide religious education and youth activities, but, parents, your teaching your children is more important than anything we can do! I m looking forward to the fair next weekend. The weather should be good and the fair committee promises a wonderful time for all. I hope to see you there. 4 STEWARDSHIP OF PRAYER What does our Church teach about prayer? Over the next several weeks, we will share some excerpts about prayer from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. THE UNIVERSAL CALL TO PRAYER 2566 Man is in search of God. In the act of creation, God calls every being from nothingness into existence. Crowned with glory and honor, man is, after the angels, capable of acknowledging how majestic is the name of the Lord in all the earth. Even after losing through his sin his likeness to God, man remains an image of his Creator, and retains the desire for the one who calls him into existence. All religions bear witness to men s essential search for God God calls man first. Man may forget his Creator or hide far from his face; he may run after idols or accuse the deity of having abandoned him; yet the living and true God tirelessly calls each person to that mysterious encounter known as prayer. In prayer, the faithful God s initiative of love always comes first; our own first step is always a response. As God gradually reveals himself and reveals man to himself, prayer appears as a reciprocal call, a covenant drama. Through words and actions, this drama engages the heart. It unfolds throughout the whole history of salvation. ATTENTION ALL READERS The 2015 Edition of the Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers is now available in the Work Sacristy.
