1 SRMS Activities and Clubs For participation in after-school activities and clubs, students are required to turn in a completed permission form to their advisory teacher before attending their first meeting. After School Activities are from 4:10pm 4:45pmTuesday and Thursday. Not every club is held both days. Please listen to the morning announcements for cancelations of an activity. Activity buses are available for students to ride home. However, the activity buses DO NOT stop at the same bus stops as the regular school buses do. The stops do vary. 1

2 Art Club Sponsors: Ms. Coriell Meeting Location: Room 220 Meeting Time: Thursday 4:10-4:45 p.m. Description: SRMS Club is open to students in 6th-8th grade. The club is for students who are interested in an "extra dose" of Art once a week. Students participate in large-scale projects (such as the bottle-cap mural project that was part of a journey to a green school) as well as small individual explorations of the student's choice. Questions can be directed to Ms. Coriell at kcorriell@aacps.org Severn River Dance Company Sponsor: Ms. Denyer Meeting Location: Dance Room Meeting time: Friday Mornings 8:15 9:15 am with occasional evening rehearsals Auditions will be held Friday September 29th from 8-9:15 A.M. Description: Severn River Dance Company is a group of skilled dancers in grades 6-8. Student must audition to participate in company. The purpose of the company is to provide the opportunity for its members to practice advanced dance skills and to perform at local dance concerts. Dancers will perform at the Anne Arundel County Dance Festival, at High School dance concerts, and in the SRMS Dance Concert. Questions can be directed to Mrs. Denyer at cdenyer@aacps.org. Robotics Club Sponsor: Ms. Russell Meeting Room: 211, Thursday at 4:10-4:45 p.m. Start Date: October 12, 2017 Description: The Robotics Club provides students with the opportunity to design, construct, program and operate Lego Mind Storm NXT Robots to perform a series of tasks. Also, students will work with Naval Academy Midshipmen, who will be providing design and engineering support for their robots. Questions can be directed to: chrussell@aacps.org Intramurals Sponsor: Ms. Wilson and Mr. Cole Meeting Location: Gym Meeting time: Tuesday and Thursday at 4:10 4:45 p.m. Description: Intramural sports program offers 6,7,8 th grade boys and girls the opportunity to play a limited number of sports in a noncompetitive and relaxing atmosphere. 3 National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Sponsors: Ms. Caspersson & Ms. Prestridge Meeting Location: Cafeteria Meeting Time: The 1 st Monday of each month 8:15 a.m. Start Date: October 2, 2017 Description: NJHS is the junior branch of the National Honor Society, an organization that focuses on leadership, citizenship, character, academic excellence, and community service. Members commit to maintaining a 3.75 GPA, contributing at least 24 hours of volunteer work over the course of the school year, and organizing service initiatives within the community. Eligible students are invited to apply at the beginning of 3rd quarter in 7th grade. During the 3rd quarter, letters are mailed to qualifying 7th grade candidates (students with a 3.75 GPA or higher) inviting them to apply to NJHS. They then attend an informational session where they are given an application. The completed applications are scored by a panel of teachers. Accepted students are inducted into the organization toward the end of the school year. NJHS has one meeting per month in addition to volunteer work in the community. This ensemble participates in two school concerts, the Anne Arundel County Adjudication Festival, the Spring Music Trip, and other special performances and events during the school year. The public performances are an outgrowth of the study which takes place in the instructional classes and co-curricular rehearsals. The Music Repertoire ranges from level 2 and 3. Participants in Honors Mixed Chorus must be enrolled in a chorus class. Members are given the opportunity to serve others and create a fun, positive school environment. Students will organize fundraisers, school dances, and other activities at Severn River Middle School throughout the year. 4 Yearbook Club Sponsor: Mr. Cook Meeting Location: Media Meeting Time: Thursday at 4:10-4:45 p.m. Start Date: October 5, 2017 Description: Students can take pictures of special events, including dances, and class activities. They will also have the opportunity to learn new photography skills, layout and design and to be a part of what s happening in our school. Stewards of the Watershed Sponsor: Mr. Greenlee Meeting Location: Room 108 Meeting Time: Tuesday at 4:10-4:45 p.m. Start Date: October 10, 2017 Description: This is a club to identify problems in our watershed and show them how they can help by raising and releasing Diamondback Terrapins, as well as look at current issues facing the Bay (sediment, pollution, etc.) Questions can be directed to Mr. Greenlee at egreenlee@aacps.org Drama Club Drama Club Sponsor: Mrs. Samantha Kymmell Meeting Location: 115 Meeting Time: 4:10-4:45 Tuesdays Start Date: Oct. 3, 2017 Description: The Drama Club is designed to build acting and auditioning skills through a performance. Club members are also encouraged to take part in working behind the scenes for a fuller understanding and experience of the theatre field. Questions can be directed to: skymmell@aacps.org. FACS Club Sponsor: Ms. Peregoy Meeting Location: Room 222 Meeting Time: Tuesday at 4:10-4:45 p.m.. Description: The FACS Club is designed to provide students with an opportunity to expand their skills in cooking, sewing, and related activities. Students will learn how to read instructions and follow directions to construct a variety of sewing projects as well as develop cooking skills. There is a $10.00 lab fee for use in purchasing food and supplies. School money cannot be used for extra-curricular activities. FACS Club participation space is limited to 20 students. 5 N ational Junior Art Honor Society Sponser: Ms. Oldershaw Meeting Location: Room 219 Meeting Time: Thursday at 4:10-4:45 p.m. SRMS National Junior Art Honor Society (NJAHS) is open to students in 7th and 8th grade who wish to expand their artistic skills through community service. Students in Art Club will: Complete several arts-based community service projects throughout the school year Have access to exclusive nation-wide contests and exhibition opportunities Host art events and exhibition Eligibility: Space is limited to 20 students. Students must maintain a 3.0 B GPA in all classes. Students must submit an application and portfolio to be considered for selection for NJAHS Requirements: NJAHS students must attend meetings regularly There is a $5 annual dues fee Contribute artworks/efforts to community service projects Questions can be directed to Mrs. Oldershaw at eoldershaw@aacps.org. Instrumental Music Performance Groups Sponsor: Ms. Pitta *Please note that students must be enrolled in band or strings class to participate. Performance groups are a co-curricular activity. Students in band or strings are expected to participate in at least one group. Rehearsals start at the end of September. More information will be given in class. Questions can be directed to Ms. Pitta at mpitta@aacps.org. Band: Mondays & some Thursdays 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. An ensemble for all winds and percussion students. Concert Band will perform at school concerts, county festival, and the spring trip. Chamber Orchestra: Tuesdays 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. The higher level string group playing grade 3-4 music. Students may choose to audition for Chamber Orchestra at the beginning of the year and must also rehearse and perform in the String Orchestra. Chamber Orchestra will perform at school concerts, and county festival. Jazz Band: Wednesdays 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. A select group for students who play a jazz band instrument: Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Piano, Bass, Guitar, and Drum Set. Preference is given to 7th and 8th grade students. Students must play in a concert group (Band for band students or String Orchestra for strings students) to be eligible to participate in Jazz Band. Rhythm Section auditions will be announced prior to the first rehearsal. Jazz Band will perform at school concerts, the county jazz festival, and other performances in the community. String Orchestra: Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. An ensemble for all strings students in the school. String Orchestra will perform at school concerts, county festival, and the spring. 5
