Gunn, Ph.D. Past President, Patriot Graves Chair CCSAR On Saturday, 29 September 2018, Cincinnati SAR Compatriots Gary Duffield, Ken Carpenter, Brad Jarard, Jason Bourgeois and Bob Bowers joined the Boone County Chapter NSDAR, Simon Kenton Chapter NSSAR and the Boone County Kentucky Public Library in a Dedication Ceremony of the marker honoring Patriot Daniel Goff. The cemetery is located at Gunpowder Road, Florence, KY The marker is at N, W. Daniel Goff was born in June 1754 as a free African American. He enlisted in September 1777 for three years in the Virginia Continental Line. He suffered that awful winter at Valley Forge, then fought in the 100+ degree heat at the Battle of Monmouth before heading south to Charleston, SC. His service ended in 1780 where it began: in Chesterfield, VA. In his pension application Daniel recalled serving under both Generals Washington and Lafayette at the Battle at Yorktown. Four of his brothers also served in the war: Abraham, Samuel, Zachariah and Moses. Daniel died in 1843, the year he received his last pension payment. His exact place of burial is unknown, but it is believed he is buried among the slaves on the outer edge of the Marshall family cemetery. Compatriots Duffield and Carpenter placed wreaths at the memorial. Compatriots Jarard, Bourgeois and Bowers were members of a Color Guard and musket squad along with members of the Simon Kenton Chapter. The Color Guard posted and retrieved colors. The musket squad fired threee volleys, followed by a mourning of arms. The ceremony ended with a single cannon shot and playing of Taps. Houston Bradley Jarard And All Living Past Presidents Presidents Message Compatriots, This month we are mourning the loss of still another compatriot: Kenneth G. Carpenter, our beloved chaplain. Ken has now entered our chapter eternal with Paul and Erv. Please continue to wear a black ribbon with your SAR member medal or rosette to pay tribute throughout the month of November. I have appointed Rev. Dr. R. Edgar Bonniwell to complete Ken s 2018 term. Ed will be offering a short memorial service for Ken at the beginning of our Wednesday evening meeting. Ken s visitation will be this Friday evening from 5 pm to 9 pm at the Hodapp Funeral Home on Vine St. in Carthage. His Funeral will be on Saturday at 10 am at the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church on Kenwood Road in Kenwood. The burial will follow the service at the Arlington Memorial Gardens Cemetery. This coming Sunday, November 11 th will be our annual Veterans Day Luncheon at 1:30 pm at the Blue Ash Quality Hotel. Contact Mike Blum for reservations. Wednesday s general meeting will include the election of our 2019 officers and 2019 Board of Management. Please plan to attend as we reaffirm and celebrate the continuing renewal and growth of our chapter. Personally, these last few months have been quite bittersweet for me. We have experienced so much loss and so much success. All this has been a bit overwhelming. I also can see the conclusion of my term as your president in sight. It has been an honor to serve you and I believe we have accomplished so much together. I will always look fondly on these two years and I look forward to new ideas and continuing growth under the guidance of our 2019 officers. I wish them and our chapter the best of success! John H. 3 CCSAR Loses Another Dedicated Patriot Compatriot Ken Carpenter passed away at home on the morning of October 29 th after a long battle with cancer. Ken served as the Cincinnati Chapter Chaplain for a number of years and he was also a member of the Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard. He was Past President of the Highlanders Chapter SAR. Ken is survived by his wife, Carolyn, daughter Jennifer and son Henry. Ken was a reverent, reliable, steadfast and committed compatriot. He will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, dear brother. Naturalization Ceremony Cincinnati SAR President Jack Bredenfoerder and Compatriot Jerry Knight attended a naturalization ceremony on October 4th at the Potter Stewart Federal Courthouse (photo below left). The compatriots welcomed 68 new citizens from 32 countries. A religious sister from the Catholic Franciscan Order was among the new citizens. Several of her fellow religious showed their support by attending the ceremony. The Honorable Karen L. Litkovitz officiated. Cincinnati SAR Compatriots Jerry Knight and Bob Bowers attended a naturalization ceremony on October 19th at the Potter Stewart Federal Courthouse (photo below). The compatriots welcomed 64 new citizens. The Honorable Beth A. Buchanan officiated.

4 Honor Flight Cincinnati Compatriots Jerry Knight, Mike Gunn, George Stewart, Mike Blum, Ed Bonniwell, Bob Bowers, Jack Bredenfoerder and Clay Crandall joined members of the Simon Kenton SAR and various Northern Kentucky DAR chapters to welcome the returning veterans from the Honor Flights of October 3rd and 23rd. Our compatriots are planning to welcome the veterans returning from the 2019 Honor Flights next year. Please join us and welcome back our local heroes! Members of the CCSAR welcome home our Veterans: Jerry Knight, Mike Gunn, George Stewart, Mike Blum, Ed Bonniwell, Bob Bowers, Jack Bredenfoerder, and Clay Crandall. of Once again this year we members of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution had the honor to post Colors and welcome back the 70-plus Veterans who served this country from their day trip to Washington D.C. The Simon Kenton Chapter of SAR in Northern Kentucky who were also represented, as well as various groups including DAR, Boy Scouts, about 200 family and well-wishers of the travelers, and the hard working staff of the Honor Flight Tri-State who coordinate the activities and select the veterans. Their mission is to offer Honor Flights to veterans so they may visit their memorials in Washington, D.C. All World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans aged 65 and older who served either stateside or overseas, are eligible. They will leave NO ONE behind! Thanks to each and every sponsor to the flights. Attending from Cincinnati SAR on October 23, 2018 were: President Jack Bredenfoerder, Robert Bowers, Gerald Knight, George Stewart, Michael Blum and Past President Michael Gunn. At the end of this season we express gratitude to those veterans and thank them for their service and sacrifices. God bless them and God bless these United States of America!

5 Lochry s Expedition, 1781 Internment Camp By Compatriot George Stewart, Chapter Historian Highway Marker In 2001 The Ohio Society and The Cincinnati Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, with the help of the Ohio Historical Society, sponsored the erection of a Historical Road Marker 150 yards west of the junction at East Miami River Road and Jordan Road in Miami Township near Cleves, Ohio. Members of the Cincinnati Chapter were there for the unveiling. Border warfare characterized the American Revolution on the northwest frontier. Between August 26 and September 15, 1781, sixty-four survivors of Lochry s Expedition were held captive by Butler s Rangers (British-allied Indians led by George Girty) in a camp near this site. Colonel Archibald Lochry s battalion of Pennsylvania militia, part of a larger punitive expedition under General George Rogers Clark and traveling down the Ohio River behind the main force, was attacked by Girty s men ten miles downstream from the mouth of the Great Miami River near present-day Aurora, Indiana. Thirty-seven militiamen were killed in the August 24 battle, including Lochry, and the rest were captured. Afterwards Rogers abandoned his objective of capturing British-held Detroit. The captives were taken to Detroit and eventually to Montreal. Tradition holds that fewer than twenty of Lochry s battalion ever returned to their homes.

6 Cincinnati SAR Goes to Yorktown, VA for 1781 Memorial Contributed by Jack Bredenfoerder Cincinnati Compatriots Jack Bredenfoerder, Lee Wilkerson and Gregg Ballman attended an NSSAR wreath laying ceremony to memorialize Governor Thomas Nelson, Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Revolutionary War soldier on Friday, October 19th in Yorktown, Virginia. They were joined by Cincinnati Chapter First Lady Laurie Bredenfoerder and Compatriots Bob Hill, Tom Hankins and Al Gummere of the Hocking Valley Chapter SAR. The compatriots all served in the National Society Color Guard and laid wreaths for the Ohio Society, Germany Society, Cincinnati Chapter and the Hocking Valley Chapter. After the memorial service the compatriots marched in the Yorktown Victory Celebration Parade. The trip was a very patriotic experience for all the compatriots. The previous day, everyone toured the Yorktown museum and dined in colonial uniform at Christiana Campbell s Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Battle of Yorktown is known as General George Washington s absolute victory because it compelled the surrender of Lord Cornwallis s British army on 19th October 1781 and secured the independence of the United States from British rule. Thomas Nelson, Jr. was an American planter, soldier, and statesman from Yorktown, Virginia. He represented Virginia in the Continental Congress and was its Governor in He signed the Declaration of Independence as a member of the Virginia delegation and fought in the militia during the Siege of Yorktown. Nelson is regarded as one of the U.S. Founding Fathers. 7 Cincinnati Compatriots Attend Memorial Service at Point Pleasant, West Virginia Cincinnati SAR Compatriots Jack Bredenfoerder, Lee Wilkerson and Mike Gunn laid wreaths for the Cincinnati Chapter SAR, Ohio Society SAR and the Germany Society SAR at the Point Pleasant Battle Days Memorial Ceremony on Sunday, October 7th. The Battle of Point Pleasant, also known as the Battle of Kanawha, was the only major action of Lord Dunmore s War. It was fought on October 10,1774, between Virginia militia and Indians from the Shawnee and Mingo tribes. Indians under the Shawnee Chief Cornstalk attacked the Virginia militia under Colonel Andrew Lewis near modern day Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Cornstalk retreated after a long and bloody battle and the Virginians, along with a second force led by Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia, marched into the Ohio Valley and forced Cornstalk into a treaty.

8 SAR Hosts Central District Annual Conference Cincinnati SAR Compatriots John Bredenfoerder and Michael Gunn attended and with the Central District Color Guard posted and retired Colors on October 26-27, 2018 at the Quality Hotel in Blue Ash, Ohio. The meeting was emceed by Timothy Ward, VPG of the Central District. In attendance were Secretary General John T. (Jack) Manning, representing the SSAR PG and six other General officers of SSAR. Overall this was the best attended Central District Meeting in recent years. The main business included reports from the Presidents of the Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia Societies; the nomination of Dr. William Sharp as the next Vice President General of the Central District; and the endorsement of candidates for the National Officers of the SAR.
