1. Bands Overview Welcome to an exciting fun-filled year of band at Interlake High School! You are part of a dynamic program with an established tradition of excellence. Band students at Interlake register for Concert Band (all freshman), Symphonic Band (sophomores, juniors, and senior), or Wind Ensemble (sophomores, juniors, and seniors). An audition process that happens during the first quarter of the school year determines the placement of students in Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band. The bands perform regularly at school concerts, community events, and band festivals. All Interlake band students fully participate in both the Interlake Marching Band and the Interlake Pep Band. Marching Band and Pep Band The Interlake Marching Band and the Interlake Pep Band perform at home football games, home basketball games, school assemblies, and selected parades including the Issaquah Salmon Days Parade, Macy s Day Holiday Parade, and the 17 th of May Ballard Parade. Marching Band uniforms and Extra Extra Loud Pep Band shirts worn at performances are provided. Required attendance at Marching Band and Pep Band activities factors into your course grade. Students and parents are expected to help and participate in fundraising efforts for planned band trips. Marching Band practice takes place during class over the first quarter of the school year. To facilitate the important opportunity of different class periods to meet together, learn field show formations, and practice on the field, mandatory Marching Band rehearsals happen on the Friday mornings of home football games, 7:55 8:25am. The Interlake Pep Band performs at home basketball games during the winter season (including playoff games if necessary), as well as at school assemblies and special events throughout the school year. Mr. Gillespie and Mr. Kim supervise while the drum majors lead and conduct the band. The provided Extra Extra Loud Pep Band t-shirt (included in the uniform fee) must be worn at all of the basketball game performances. The rest of your clothes may be casual dress. Early Week Marching Band Camp Over the second or third week of August Interlake band students participate in a fun-filled week of marching drills and music, earning new marching band music, gaining a lasting comradery and esprit de corps among band members. It is during this week of marching activities that band students are fit for Marching Band uniforms and learn fundamental marching drills, and work to prepare the first two marching field shows. Early Week activities culminate with a BBQ lunch celebration provided by the Interlake Music Parents Association at noon on Friday. Drum Majors The drum majors are the student leaders to all of the Interlake band students. They regularly attend advisory meetings with Mr. Kim and Mr. Gillespie to plan Marching and Pep Band activities and coordinate all of the marching practices. Drum majors are most visible when they are leading the band
in parades and halftime marching shows. They wear white uniforms, carry batons, and use whistles to signal the band. Drum Majors are selected by the directors following an audition process in May and June factoring in the feedback of Interlake administrators, a student survey, and performance audition. Drum majors are required to attend a summer camp to practice leadership skills and baton techniques. Jazz I and Jazz II As an Interlake band student, you are invited to audition over the first two weeks of September for placement in the Jazz I or Jazz II ensembles. The Interlake jazz bands perform throughout the school year at concerts, community events, and jazz festivals. Jazz I and Jazz II are full-year, for-credit graded courses. Jazz bands rehearse during 0 period 7:05 7:55am, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 7:35 8:25am on Wednesdays. 2. Student Expectations Expectations for Interlake Band Students Students will behave in a respectful, courteous, and helpful manner to all adults and peers. Students will be on time for all ensemble rehearsals, performances, and activities. Students will fully participate in all requirements, activities, and performances of their ensembles. Students will assume responsibility for keeping track of information posted on the Interlake Music Department website ( Students will support, assist, and teach each other in appositive fashion at appropriate times. Students will be responsible for keeping track of all assessment deadlines, concert performances, rehearsals, and events of the Interlake Band Calendar. Students will accomplish all of the assigned reading, listening, and composing outside of class time. Attendance Policy for Interlake Band Students Attendance is mandatory for all ensemble rehearsals and performances. Every unexcused absence will result in a loss of points toward your grade. Every unexcused tardy will result in a loss of points toward your grade and might result in a disciplinary action.
3. Uniform and Concert Attire Marching Uniform Your marching band uniform includes a beret, wool pants, and a heavy wool jacket. Uniforms will not be brought home. The pants are fit length-wise and have an adjustable waist and suspenders. You must provide your own black socks and comfortable black shoes. Athletic shoes are fine but they must be all black with no white markings. Black socks must be at least mid-calf length, not the black ankle sport socks. In parade competitions, uniformity in appearance is evaluated along with technical and artistic performance. Depending on the weather, you may choose to wear a t-shirt under your uniform jacket. The uniforms cost over $500 each, and can take up to six months to order, so please take extra care while wearing and hanging them. Drum majors will provide instruction on proper storing of uniforms at the beginning of the marching season. Students must report any stains, loose snaps or buttons, or other damage immediately before putting away a uniform. If you have a problem with your uniform, please let one of the parent volunteers or directors know as soon as possible. Any loss or damage may result in a school fine. Your uniform will be stored in a garment bag labeled with your name, jacket number, pants number, and beret number. This is stored in the uniform room. Parent volunteers distribute the uniforms before events and collect the uniforms after events. Students are responsible for properly hanging their uniform on the hanger provided, or, if instructed to do so, on chairs to dry if marching in the rain has occurred. Please do not put shoes or any heavy objects inside the garment bags. Marching shoes and socks should not be stored in the band room. Pep Band Uniform Extra Extra Loud pep band t-shirts (provided) will be worn with casual pants and shoes. Concert Attire Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble students are responsible for purchasing concert performance attire. Please reference the Concert Dress Uniform Buying Guide for tips and instructions about purchasing the concert dress uniform.
4. Fees All band fees are paid to the school accountant. Uniform fees are due during Early Week Marching Band Camp in August. $50 Uniform Fee Paid by all band students. This fee covers the costs of cleaning and maintaining the marching band uniforms and the cost of the pep band t-shirts. $30 Transportation Fee Paid by all students. If you are also in Jazz I or Jazz II you will pay this fee twice. Like sports, this fee is per activity. This fee covers the costs of transportation to band events and performances. Please note that this will possibly not cover all transportation costs and some additional out-of-pocket expenses may be incurred throughout the school year. $25 Music Fee Paid by all band students. This fee helps pay for sheet music and other miscellaneous costs not covered by the Interlake general budget. $50 Instrument Rental Fee Paid only by students who use a Bellevue School District instrument. This fee is applied per instrument unless otherwise arranged by the directors. Students are responsible for the instrument(s) that are checked out to them. If an instrument is lost, stolen, or damaged, this must be reported immediately to Mr. Kim or Mr. Gillespie. The student is responsible for the cost of the repair or replacement of that instrument. $25 Jazz Activity Fee Paid by all students enrolled in either Jazz I or Jazz II. $65 Student ASB Card 5. Activities Marching Band Early Week The marching band meets for one full week of daily sessions from 9 3pm to practice marching drills, learn marching band music, and be fit for marching uniforms. This experience prepares the band to be ready to perform at home football games at the beginning of the school year, and is a great way for incoming freshman to make new friends before the first day of school! There is a fun social barbeque for the band on the last day of early week. Home Football Games and Halftime Marching Band Shows Students meet in the band room at 5:45 p.m. to change into their uniforms. At 6:30 p.m., the band, along with the IHS drill team, marches around the field and then sits together in a designated area of the bleachers on the home side. Mr. Kim directs the band in playing the National Anthem prior to the start of the game. The drum majors lead the band as they play during timeouts and other opportunities throughout the game. At halftime, the band performs on the field, followed by the drill team. The band students are given a break during the third quarter, and then return to play for the fourth quarter. They end the evening with a performance in front of the music concession stand to thank the parent volunteers for their support!
Parades Issaquah Salmon Days First Saturday of October. Meet at the school early, buses provided to and from downtown Issaquah. Macy s Holiday Parade Friday after Thanksgiving. Meet at school early, buses provided to and from downtown Seattle. The students will wear blue Santa hats instead of berets for this parade. Ballard Parade May 17 every year. This is an early evening parade. Buses provided to and from Ballard. Concerts, Festivals & Competitions Students perform at a variety of concerts and festivals throughout the year. Each band may have a slightly different schedule, but most concerts are combined. There is a fall, winter and spring concert for all groups. The combined Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble plays at graduation in June. All information regarding concert schedules can be found on the interlakemusic.org website. All Interlake bands will participate in concert band festivals throughout the year. Festivals allow the bands the opportunity to be e by an accredited adjudicator, which is a great way to get feedback about ways to improve the level of musicianship. 7 6. Interlake Music Parents Association Every parent of a student registered for Band, Orchestra, or Choir is part of the Interlake Music Parents Association (IMPA). There are no membership fees. We ask that each family consider how they can help the Music Department, through any combination of volunteering or financial donations. The purpose of our organization is to support the directors of all music groups. As members of the IMPA, we meet with the music directors to discuss their needs and raise funds to support their programs. The IMPA meets on a monthly basis and everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. Most monthly meetings are in the evening in the Career Counseling Center at Interlake. IMPA proudly recognizes outstanding student and group achievement throughout the year. Announcements are reported on the in the IMPA weekly newsletter, circulated by . This is a terrific way to keep in touch with what is going on in music. Through this , parents are notified about changes to the calendar, upcoming events and meetings, competition results, and requests for volunteers. Sign up on the IMPA website at Fundraising IMPA supports all music programs at Interlake High School. There are a variety of short-term and longterm fundraising volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Funds raised are used to purchase new sheet music; maintain and replace instruments; provide student scholarships; and to pay for guest clinicians, field trips, festival fees, and new uniforms. Donations to the IMPA are tax-deductible and gratefully accepted! IMPA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Don t forget your matching funds form if you work for Microsoft, Boeing, or other companies that match their employees charitable contributions. An easy and fun way to help raise funds for the music department is by volunteering at the music concession table at home football games. This is a great way to meet other music parents, and get an up close and personal look at the marching band (which descends on the booth in the third quarter of the game)! Parents can take shifts for either the first half or second half of the game. Other Volunteer Opportunities Here are some other ways to support the Interlake Music program and get to know your fellow IMPA members: Chaperones IMPA Board of Directors Fundraising Coordinators Communications Attend parades, festivals and other outings Serve as President, Vice-President representing one of the groups (Choir, Orchestra, Band, Jazz Band), Secretary, or Treasurer. Cookie Dough Sales, IHS Auction, Concession Stand, Entertainment Books, and more! Website, . etc..
Volunteer Coordinator Photographer Coordinate volunteers for band events throughout the year Take pictures of band activities for the yearbook, website, and other publications 7. Miscellaneous Sectionals Sectionals are extra practices that the student must attend. These count toward the student s music grade. Mr. Kim and Mr. Gillespie appoint section leaders to be in charge of planning and leading the sectionals. Sectionals can take place during lunch hours or after school. Notices regarding sectional scheduling are often left on the white board in the band room. Students are required to attend 8 sectionals per quarter per ensemble. For example, if you are in Symphonic Band, and Jazz band, you would need to attend 8 Symphonic band sectionals and 8 Jazz Band sectionals per quarter. Practice Rooms and Instrument Lockers The music wing is home to several sound-proof practice rooms. Mr. Kim welcomes band students to come during lunch and after school to practice their music or just hang out with the other band students. The instrument lockers are located in the main hallway between the music wing and the theater. Students who own their instrument must buy their own lock if they wish to obtain a music locker. Please see Mr. Kim to check out an instrument locker. Music Activity Letter Students may earn an activity letter in the Interlake music program. Students must earn 100 points to receive the activity letter, much like a varsity sports letter. Points may be carried over from year to year until a letter is given. Once you have earned a letter, you would begin the following school year at zero points. You may start earning points the summer before any given school year. Letter criteria can be found on the web site.
