4 Recent News Seeking Community Displays We are seeking individuals, organizations and community groups to showcase collections or projects in our display cases near the front entrance. 5 Youth Programs LAPSIT: Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. For infants through age two with a caregiver, this program is a fun way to begin library visits and literary experiences. Come learn new rhymes, songs and baby games while listening to stories and meeting other families with young children. (Note: There will be no Lapsit on March 2. Lapsit on March 16 and 30 will be followed by Stay and Play 30 minutes of playtime for babies.) STORYTIME: Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. (Pajama Storytime), Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. For children age three through grade two, this is a fun combination of books, songs, Spanish language experiences, storytelling, finger plays, poems, puppets and MORE! (Note: There will be no Pajama Storytime on March 6 and March 20.) YOGA STORYTIME: Saturdays, March 9 and 23, at 10:30 a.m. For children age three through grade two, join us for yoga movement and stories. Young children and their caregivers are invited to act out stories using creative yoga movements, sounds and song. A limited number of child-sized yoga mats will be available. YOUNG ADULT BOOK CLUB: Saturday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m. For any teenager who loves to read and talk about books. Members select which books they want to read, and they also author the teen book discussion blog. This month s book is American Street by Ibi Zoboi. LEGO CLUB: Tuesday, March 12, at 3:45 p.m. For those in kindergarten through 6th grade, this is a fun and creative opportunity to build imaginative, new projects using the library s abundant LEGO collection. GOLDEN SOWER BOOK CLUB: Monday, March 25, at 4:00 p.m. This is a special book club for kids ages 8-12 whose reading selections come from titles nominated for the Golden Sower Award, Nebraska s Children s Choice Literary Award. This month s book is Rules by Cynthia Lord. 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN: Reading 1,000 books to your child before kindergarten is a fun and rewarding way to instill an early love of reading! Any child from birth until kindergarten can participate. Completion will take from a few months to a few years, depending on how often you read. Stop by the library to sign up today! 6 Poetry Corner by Bonnie Johnson-Bartee Yellow Umbrellas Motherhood came hard as a spring thunderstorm. She spent her time watching the radar, riding it out in the cellar, then emerged, gray as a weathered barn, kissed with grandchildren who wear rain boots to splash in mud puddles and dance under yellow umbrellas. A revival she didn't expect, to see the difference between magenta and pink, find fuzz in belly buttons, watch Bambi and cry. Run through tall grass and straight to the river catch minnows with butterfly nets and tiny frogs with snow cone cups, find boats, bicycles, and fire engines in the clouds, sing London Bridge then laugh when we all fall down, fill up on popcorn before supper, stay up late telling stories and laugh at root beer belches. Now the itch of regret it took so long to get right. Should've played in the rain all along. 6

This month s book is The Chilbury Ladies Choir by Jennifer Ryan. 20s & 30s BOOK CLUB: March 28 at 6:30 p.m. This month s book is Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard. Members are also invited to a Book-to -Screen party on March 5 at 5:30 p.m. Talk About Books! Have you ever been introduced to a book that you never would have chosen on your by Janet Portiner own? As a librarian, I get the pleasure of interacting with lots of people who love to talk about a variety of books. The opinions of others often persuade me to pick up something that I may not have otherwise gone near. That s one reason why I think book clubs are a great idea. Literary tastes vary, but so do my interests! Although reading a book is often a solitary venture, there is much to be gained by talking it over with others who can relate. Books become more meaningful when they are discussed in a group. Themes are uncovered, new perspectives are considered and hidden complexities are examined. With so many books to choose from, it s easy to find something to read, but I want more. I want to read something that shows me the world in a more profound way. Book clubs allow all of us to expand our reading selections, meet new people and increase our knowledge together! 7
