2 Hello and Happy New Year, In October s newsletter I spoke briefly about The Social actively pursuing a grant through OCRA (Office of Community & Rural Affairs). As many of you know, The Social often experiences issues with parking, room for programs and space in general. I am excited to let you know we received the initial planning grant in November. This grant has allowed us to hire Springpoint Architecture Firm to conduct a feasibility study. In fact, you may have seen them around the building with their tape measures! This Spring, we will be entering the next phase of the process, the construction grant. We need to raise $56,000, which is our 10% match. With that being said, we are launching our 2018 Raise the Roof Building Fund Campaign. With over 1,000 members, even the smallest individual donation can collectively make a great impact. The Social relies on generosity of individuals like you. You can help now by contributing to our Campaign. Think non-impact aerobics, adapted to all skill levels, with a little bit of Yoga and Tai Chi thrown in. And no, you do not have to have any kind of formal training or skill, come as you are. Normal Aging vs. Dementia Overview of Dementia types Join Dr. Mossbarger, as he speaks on Dementia, a subject close to home for many of us. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Mossbarger has become an authority on Gero-Psychology. The focus of Dr. Mossbarger s practice is working to maximize the opportunities of later life and help Seniors cope positively with the emotional, cognitive, and relationship challenges they face. When should I be worried? Risk Factors Early Signs and Detection Are there ways to help prevent Dementia? Dr. Mossbarger received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Ohio State University, and both master s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Ohio University. His professional history includes private practice, mental health services, consultation to nursing homes and teaching. He has both published and corroborated on numerous professional journals on issues relevant to gero-psychology. Currently he is in private practice at Hendricks Therapy, an outpatient Mental Health practice in Danville and Plainfield. 13 Around the Center Volunteer of the Month The members have nominated a special group as our January Volunteer of the Month. For the last several months, a group of Nursing Students from the University of Indianapolis have been volunteering on Thursday mornings around the Center. They ve done everything from helping in the Food Pantry, prepping materials for the Craft Club, assisting in decorating for our Annual Sunset Soiree Fundraiser to even hosting a Halloween Party for our members! Our Craft Club made a wonderful donation of socks, gloves, hats and crocheted mats to the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation. We had a festive Holiday Party where we ate entirely too much delicious food, sang Christmas carols, gave away lots of prizes and even had a visit from Santa. You re never too old to enjoy a visit from the big man himself!
