2 PACIFIC, LONG BEACH STATE GAIN ENTRY TO 2011 NCAA SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT The 2011 edition of the NCAA Softball Tournament will include two Big West programs as Pacific and Long Beach State were selected to participate in the chase for the national championship. The Tigers (37-17, 16-5 Big West) are back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007 and the ninth time overall. The club is an automatic qualifier after winning the Big West regular season championship for the first time in school history. Pacific s postseason path begins in the Palo Alto Regional against #15 seed Stanford. The other two clubs in that regional are Fresno State and Nebraska with play set to begin Friday. The 49ers (37-16, 15-6 Big West) are making their 20th showing in the NCAA Tournament and the third postseason showing in five years under head coach Kim Sowder. LBSU will be playing in the Tempe Regional against San Diego State Friday. Joining the two squads are North Dakota State and the #1 overall seed Arizona State. PACIFIC POSTSEASON QUICK FACTS Pacific owns a record in eight previous NCAA Tournament appearances, having made the tourney in 1985, 98, 99, 01, 02, 03, 04 and 07. In their most recent trip, the Tigers reached the final of the Tucson Regional, but were ultimately eliminated by the #1 overall seed Arizona Wildcats. This also marks Pacific s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament as the Big West champion. LONG BEACH STATE POSTSEASON QUICK FACTS Long Beach State is now tied with Cal State Fullerton for the most NCAA Tournament appearances, making it s 20th showing in the race for the national title. The 49ers are all-time in the NCAAs, with the wins mark ranking third in conference history and second among the current membership. LBSU is also one of two current Big West members to have reached the College World Series, advancing to the event in 1986 and The 49ers most recent trip to the postseason came in 2009 as an at-large selection. That year the club went 1-2 in the Los Angeles Regional HISTORY MADE Pacific is one of the perennial powers in the Big West, having won 808 games over 26-plus seasons as a member of the conference. Included in that membership was a 50-win season in 2001, eight NCAA appearances, numerous postseason honors and a 12-year run of winning seasons from Despite of this run of success, the Tigers finally won their first Big West title this season, a feat that five of the current league members and four former ones have accomplished during Pacific s time in the Big West. WE VE SEEN THIS BEFORE When the Big West major awards were doled out this week, Long Beach State freshman Erin Jones- Wesley got her fair share of hardware. Jones-Wesley was named the Big West Pitcher of the Year and AROUND THE BIG WEST Freshman Pitcher of the Year, only the second time in league history that an athlete had won two major awards in the same season. Jones-Wesley was just following in the footsteps of her teammate Brooke Turner who won the same two awards back in her freshman season in FOUR PLAYERS GAIN ALL-REGION NODS The Big West had four players earn spots on All- Region teams as the Pacific trio of Megan Hom, Nikki Armagost and Kelsey Rodriguez joined Long Beach State star Erin Jones-Wesley earned their way onto the lists. The Tiger trio found themselves on the second team of the Pacific Region. Hom made the list as an outfielder, Armagost as a utility/pitcher and Rodriguez as the utility/non-pitcher. Meanwhile Jones-Wesley s name appeared on the second team of the West Region as she made it as a pitcher. RULE THE WEST The Big West has reclaimed its place among the premier mid-major conferences with a stellar showing against its brethren out west. The league is a combined against the Mountain West, Pacific Coast Softball and WAC after going against those same leagues a year ago. COACHING MILESTONES APLENTY The latter part of the Big West season has had plenty of excitement on the field, and as a result several coaches have reached or are on the cusp of career milestones. Cal State Fullerton head coach Michelle Gromacki added to her legacy on April 22 as the 12th-year head coach won her 400th career game. She becomes the fourth coach in Big West history to reach that illustrious milestone and the second Titan head coach to do so. The other three coaching legends to surpass 400 victories in conference history are all-time leader Pete Mararino of Long Beach State (791), Cal State Fullerton s Judi Garman (581) and current Pacific head coach Brian Kolze (573). Pacific s Brian Kolze, the dean of Big West coaches in his 19th season, is approaching an impressive number in coaching victories. Currently standing at 580 wins, seven more victories will put Kolze past former Cal State Fullerton head coach Judi Garman and into second place all-time in Big West history. Kolze is likely to reach an even bigger milestone next season as he should reach 600 career wins. Cal Poly s Jenny Condon achieved a major milestone on the last day of the regular season as the Mustangs WEEKLY HOME RUN TRACKER Player, School Season Total Tracy Allen, Cal State Northridge 7 Kameryn Hebenton, UC Riverside 5 Alexis Pickett, UC Riverside 5 Ashley Romano, Cal Poly (2) 4 Madeline Sale, Cal State Northridge 2 Christina Schallig, Long Beach State 7 Jessica Vasser, UC Riverside 3 BIG WEST VS. 7 Big West Conference - 2 Corporate Park, Suite 206, Irvine, CA Softball Contact: Chris Hargraves (Assistant Director) For more information - Phone: (949) Fax: (949) chargraves@bigwest.org All-Conference Release - Tuesday, May 17, 2011 Pacific Claims Three Major Softball Awards Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State Also Nab Honors IRVINE, CALIF. -- After winning the first Big West championship in its program history, Pacific added to its 2011 season with three of the league s major awards. Nikki Armagost was named Offensive Player of the Year, Kelsey Rodriguez earned Freshman Field Player of the Year and Brian Kolze nabbed the Coach of the Year honor. Long Beach State also earned multiple awards as Erin Jones-Wesley was named the Big West Pitcher and Freshman Pitcher of the Year. It marks the second time in league history that an athlete has achieved that feat as Jones-Wesley s teammate Brooke Turner did it back in Cal State Fullerton also picked up recognition as K.C. Craddick was named the Big West Defensive Player of the Year. Armagost is Pacific s first Offensive Player of the Year since Gina Carbonatto in 2006 and just the fourth Tiger recipient in the history of the Big West. The two-way star has been a stalwart in the middle of the Pacific lineup all season, batting.374 with 45 RBI, 64 hits, 35 runs and 11 doubles. She ranks fourth in batting, tied for second in RBI, second in hits, fourth in runs scored and tied for seventh in doubles. In conference play, the Andover, Kan., native batted.333 (24-72) with 13 RBI, 15 runs scored, seven doubles, a.431 slugging mark and a.400 onbase percentage. Armagost has also collected 20 multi-hit games, including one four-hit outburst, and 12 multi-rbi outings which included two games of five RBI. Jones-Wesley becomes the second Pitcher of the Year in four years and the fourth Freshman Pitcher of the Year winner in five seasons for LBSU. Her freshman season has been nothing short of amazing as she leads the Big West in ERA (1.45) and wins (22), while ranking fifth in innings pitched (183.2), second in strikeouts (163), second in opposing batting average (.211) and second in runs allowed (48). Jones-Wesley was just as stellar in conference play, going 11-3 with a 1.55 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 86.0 innings. Jones-Wesley had a number of highlights during her true freshman campaign, including striking out 11 in a win over Utah State on March 13, pitching a no-hitter against Baylor on March 5 and winning six Big West Pitcher of the Week awards. Craddick is the Defensive Player of the Year recipient in the inaugural year of the award. One of the premier defenders in the Big West, Craddick spends most of her time in the infield, but can also play outfield for the Titans. In 381 chances, Craddick recorded 364 putouts, 16 assists and committed just one error for a.997 fielding percentage. She has the highest fielding percentage of all players in the league with 300+ chances and was a part of 13 double plays. Rodriguez is the third Pacific player to win the Freshman Field Player of the Year and second in four years. After getting off to a slow start, Rodriguez leads the Big West in hitting with a.395 batting average and ranks eighth in the league in hits (51). She tore apart Big West foes to the tune of a.406 batting average, two home runs 16 RBI, a.531 slugging percentage, 10 walks and three steals while starting all 21 contests. In addition to winning a Big West Player of the Week award on May 9, Rodriguez had 12 multi-hit games and seven multi-rbi outings. Kolze led Pacific to an impressive turnaround in 2011, culminating in the program s first Big West championship. After going just in 2010, Kolze has led the Tigers to a mark and their first NCAA bid since Along the way, Pacific has topped three ranked teams, including California out of the Pac-10, claimed eight Big West weekly awards and recorded it s most overall and conference wins since the 2002 season. This marks the fourth time Kolze has won the Big West Coach of the Year honor, but the first time since 2002 that he has taken away the league s top coaching honor. Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and Pacific each led the way with eight All-Big West selections, but the Tigers had the most first teamers as they placed seven on the list. UC Riverside also had a big moment as the club had Kayla White named to the first team. She is just the third Highlander in program history to gain a spot on the league s top squad.
